For Apple IT admins who manage thousands of remote Macs, providing support for end users is not always easy. There can be a lot of variables that you must uncover when issues arise. One of the things I’ve often thought Apple should add is a simple menu bar app that can quickly allow users to copy and paste key data into a support ticket. Thankfully, one company is continuing to provide a solution: Root3’s Support App and version 2.5 recently shipped.
2023 has seen some exciting announcements and releases around HomeKit door locks. With Home Key, Level Lock+, and the Aqara doorbell, it’s been an exciting year. These door locks have been focused around exterior doors, though. The HOLOMARQ Smart Door Knob is a new interior door option for HomeKit that provides some unique use cases.

I know some of you aren’t bullish on Matter. Is it perfect? No. Does it need more features to truly become the vendor-neutral smart home specification? Yes. I believe in it, though. I believe in it because every manufacturer wins with Matter. When customers know that your products can work across every platform, like Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, and Google Assistant, they’re more likely to buy your products. I recently picked up the OREiN light bulbs from AiDot to put its Matter certification through the paces to see how easy it is.

Inflation is certainly affecting everyone. It’s laughable what some things have increased in price in the past few years. I’ve been testing a HomeKit plug that, thankfully, is somehow the lowest-cost plug I’ve seen on the market. The Sylvania Smart Bluetooth Outlet adaptor is the only plug I’ve seen at this price in all my years of covering smart home technology.

Cellular-enabled Macs have been on tech professionals’ wish lists for as long as cellular speeds have been fast enough to actually be useful for data. Apple sells cellular-enabled iPads and cellular-enabled Apple Watches, and of course all iPhones include cellular data, so why not the Mac? Today, I want to make the case that Apple should offer an option to include a built-in cellular modem in MacBook Pro laptops as a way to differentiate them on the high end of the lineup.

In this episode of Apple @ Work, I talk with Bobby Shell from Voltage about the Lightning Network, how it might impact mobile payments, and how content creators can use it today.
Earlier this year, I had a chance to use the SmartWings shades that were designed to work with HomeKit. I’ve really enjoyed using them, and it truly has made my home feel like something out of the Jetsons. About a month ago, I received another shipment from SmartWings that included a new pair of shades that includes, for the first time in a smart shade product, Matter support.
One of the new features coming to watchOS 10 this fall that should be exciting for IT professionals is the ability to add the Apple Watch to a device management system. One might wonder: Isn’t the Apple Watch a consumer device? It is, but there are plenty of reasons a company might deploy Apple Watches. It could be because of the noise detection for employees working in a warehouse or for doctors wearing them for communication around a hospital. Today, Mosyle is releasing a beta version of its device management system that allows for the onboarding of Apple Watches.

Apple makes a lot of tools for IT teams when it comes to managing iPads, iPhones, and Macs. Apple Configurator is a fantastic tool that acts as a Swiss army knife of sorts when it comes to doing tasks locally on iPhones and iPads when paired with a Mac. That doesn’t mean there isn’t room for innovation, though. I recently came across a tool that could be incredibly useful in the right circumstances: Telepod.
I’ve been using Umbrel at home for the last year and a half. Previously, I used a Raspberry Pi 4 to power my Umbrel server, but I recently upgraded to the new Umbrel Home, which includes everything prebuilt and ready to go. 2023 has been the year when I’ve really been thinking hard about where my data is, which companies have access to it, and how I can better control my costs. After spending a few weeks with Umbrel Home, I completely recommend it as a streamlined smart home hub for Homebridge while also allowing you to build your own personal cloud.
Apple’s growth in the enterprise has been well documented over the years. What hasn’t been well documented is how much Apple deployments contribute to positive business success. In a new survey today released by Kandji, nearly all IT professionals (90%) agree that deploying Apple devices in the workplace delivers positive business advantages
SwitchBot has been on my radar since back in 2020 when I discovered their button pusher that I bridged to HomeKit using HOOBS/Homebridge. They offer some pretty unique smart home products that I’ve enjoyed using over the years. Today, they’re rolling out (pun intended) a brand-new SwitchBot Curtain 3 with Matter support.
Right in lockstep with Apple’s fall updates, Parallels Desktop 19 is here right on schedule with some exciting enhancements around macOS Sonoma integration, a new design, and a new Password-less Sign-in with Touch ID. If you use virtualization for your daily work on macOS, it’s a great update, so stay ready as we dive into all the latest features.

Apple Business Essentials is Apple’s solution for businesses not quite ready for a full-fledged device management solution but would likely stick to “unmanaged” devices otherwise. I’ve said from the beginning of the release: Apple’s competitor for business essentials is unmanaged and devices that are not in compliance. Recently, CDW announced it would begin resellingApple Business Essentials as well. For a limited time, they’re even offering two months for free.
Addigy, the popular device management app, has released a new Compliance and Conditional Access engine, a comprehensive solution that enables seamless, one-click device compliance for macOS devices that meets CIS and NIST standards.
Matter continues to be the 2023 theme as various smart home manufacturers continue to release supported products. Aqara has long been one of my go-to smart home vendors when you want a low-cost item that supports the latest technology. A prime example of the level of products that Aqara produces is the new U100 door lock that supports Home Key. It’s such a fantastic product at a low cost. Today, they’re delivering the new Aqara T1 Light Strip that has quickly become of my favorite light strip products on the market.

In this episode of Apple @ Work, I talk with Mirela Cunjalo, Global Product Management at HP Anyware about their latest announcements and why remote Macs have become paramount in remote editing for TV and movies.
I’ve said multiple times how I think Google’s first-party hardware strategy is something Apple should be copying. While Google doesn’t make everything for the Google smart home ecosystem, they do make some key products like doorbells, thermostats, and cameras. If you’re just getting started with a smart home platform, Google has some easy options to start. Even though I love them, I prefer using HomeKit, so I use the Starling Home Hub in order to make them compatible with HomeKit. I recently picked up the Google Nest smoke detector to see how it works as well. Let’s dive in.
