MiniPlayer jailbreak tweak updated with brand-new design

Fans of the iTunes 11 mini-player will be excited for the newest version of the jailbreak tweak MiniPlayer. The 2.0 update brings a newly-redesigned interface that better matches the iTunes version, as well as the ability to dock it on either side of the screen. The docked player can be moved up or down the screen as needed to keep it out of the way of whatever app you’re using.

MiniPlayer has a few settings that allow you to hide it on the lockscreen, whenenver the music is paused, or by triggering an Activator action. Tapping the album artwork brings up whichever app is currently playing music (it works with any background audio app), and tapping the metadata of the song brings up playback controls.

MiniPlayer 2.0 is a free update for existing users, or a $1.99 purchase for new users on the BigBoss repo.

iPhone reportedly coming to Boost Mobile in Q3 of 2013

Site default logo image

Boost Mobile, a prepaid US carrier powered by Sprint’s network, will be the latest carrier to add the iPhone to their lineup, according to Twitter user @evleaks. The phone is claimed to launch in Q3, and will make Boost the fourth prepaid carrier in the United States to carry Apple’s smartphone.

Sprint’s other prepaid holding, Virgin Mobile, has carried the iPhone since June of 2012 and recently launched a bizarrely awesome ad campaign to lure customers away from other networks. A competing prepaid carrier, Cricket, has also carried the iPhone since June. Straight Talk became the third big prepaid iPhone carrier in January of 2013.

I watched “iSteve” so you wouldn’t have to

Site default logo image

title

Steve Jobs sits alone in a dark room, reading notes from a set of index cards and a MacBook Pro. The janitor walks in and tell him he should go to sleep. Steve replies, “Yeah, I will, I will. I just need to rehearse this keynote speech for tomorrow.” The janitor laughs. “That’s what you told me four hours ago!”

This is the opening scene of “iSteve,” Funny Or Die’s new Steve Jobs biopic-comedy. It’s also the closest thing to reality you will see over the next seventy-eight minutes.

Watching this movie felt a lot like using a PC. I spent half the time staring at the screen in utter bewilderment, and the other half desperately trying to figure out how something so void of any semblance of taste was actually OK’d by anyone at any level of the production.

The search for the top App.net client

Site default logo image

Welcome to 9to5Mac’s Smackdown series, where we compare the top hardware and software accessories for your Apple products.

App.net (or “ADN,” as many users have come to call it) was launched last year as an alternative to other microblogging platforms that had become more hostile to developers in recent months. The idea wasn’t so much about ripping off Twitter as it was about giving developers a friendly place to build cool apps and services. Rather than being funded by venture capitalists or advertisments, ADN was funded solely by the people using the platform. Users and app developers paid a yearly fee to get into the network or build on its API.

In the time since it was opened to the public, ADN has lowered their annual fee, introduced feature-limited, invitation-only free accounts, a cloud storage service, and more. Thanks to the developer-friendly atmosphere, many amazing iPhone clients have been released. In today’s smackdown, we’re going to put three of the most popular, fully-featured apps head-to-head to determine which one is the best.

If you want to give these apps a try, you’ll need either a free or paid ADN account. The free accounts are only available by invitation, but lucky for you we happen to have 400 invitations to hand out. Want to claim one? Just click this link and sign up. Once you get there, be sure to follow us.

Bump for iPhone loses the ability to share iTunes tracks between devices

The popular peer-to-peer file sharing app Bump was updated to version 3.5.8 today, and according to the change notes one of the features has been removed. Apparently at Apple’s request, the developers have disabled the ability to share music from your iTunes library to another Bump user or your computer.

New in 3.5.8:
+ Bug fixes and performance improvements.
+ We’re sorry, but we are no longer permitted access to iTunes audio files on the device. Removing access to iTunes audio files in the file sharing section.

If you want to keep this feature, be sure to save a copy of the old version of the app in case you accidentally update. You can just drag the Bump icon out of the Apps section of your iTunes library and drop it in a folder to keep it there. If you ever accidentally update to the new version, you can just delete the app from your phone and iTunes library, then drag the old version into iTunes and reinstall it on your device from there.

If you’re jailbroken and want to avoid an accidental update, the free tweak Update Hider can hide the update from the App Store entirely.

Review: Readdle brings Documents to the small screen

Site default logo image

Readdle has finally brought their popular Documents iPad app to the iPhone and iPod touch with the latest update. The iPhone version has all of the features you would expect in a file management app and a few extras.

The main file manager window displays all of your files in a grid or list sorted by name, date, or size. You can create folders, zip and unzip archives, and view a variety of file types from this view. PDFs, plaintext files, audio, pictures, and more can be added to your collection. The audio player works when the app is in the background so you can continue listening to your music.

Your most recently used files will accumulate in a special folder automatically so you can find them again easily. A search feature on the main page allows you to search any file by name, but you can also enable an indexing feature lets the app search the contents of your documents as well.

Kickstarter: ZenBoxx promises to help eliminate desk clutter with the MacBook ZenDock

If your desk looks anything like mine, seen above, then you probably know the joys of constantly connecting and disconnecting a handful of cables every time you need to move your MacBook away from your desk or put it back.  In my case, I have to fiddle with these cables every few hours when I take my MacBook downstairs to work in the living room or bring it back upstairs to plug it into my monitor. I hate it.

The ZenDock, which hit Kickstarter today, promises to help eliminate most of this problem for me, and from the looks of it, the folks at ZenBoxx might just be on to something. The ZenDock comes in two varieties: Pro and Retina. As you might imagine, the names correspond to the MacBook model that the dock is designed to work with.

Apple makes age ratings more prominent in the iOS App Store

Photo 1

Apple slightly tweaked the layout of App Store pages again today. The most recent change moves the rating information that was previously at the bottom of the page to the top below the developer’s name. Apple recently added a notice about in-app purchases in this area, too, making the top of each app’s page the place to find the most important information at a glance. Previously information such as in-app purchases and ratings could only be found by scrolling to the bottom of the page.

Thanks for the tip, Jesse!

The Week in Tweaks: Automatic App Store updates, a new screen recorder, and more for your jailbroken iOS device

Site default logo image

Here’s a look at some of the most fun or useful jailbreak tweaks that came out this week. If you like these tweaks, but don’t have a jailbroken iOS device, you can check out jailbrea.kr to learn more about how to jailbreak your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad.

Auto App Updater – $2.99

Auto App Updater is exactly what it sounds like. This great new tweak will automatically download and install updates to any of your App Store apps without any input from you. It comes with a ton of options for how often to check for updates, whether or not to use a celluar connection, whether to update apps when on battery or AC power, and even lets you blacklist apps from being automatically updated just in case there’s an app you’d rather keep at a certain version.

What’s more, for those of us who like to know exactly what we’re getting into with each app update, Auto App Updater will store the change log for any apps that it updates so you can check and see exactly what’s new. Of course, the only way you would know to check this change log is if you knew that there was an update to begin with. Since Auto App Updater installs the updates transparently in the background, you likely won’t even know there are change logs to read. To fix that, the tweak can show you a notification letting you know each time an update has been installed.

Auto App Updater is seroiusly impressive and it looks like a lot of thought went into making it the most comprehensive auto-update solution possible. You can get it now on ModMyi for the reasonably low price of $2.99.

Twitterrific 5.2 finally brings native push notifications, but there’s a catch…

Site default logo image

large_upload

Twitterrific 5, the newest version of the Iconfactory’s wildly popular Twitter client, got a big update today. For the first time since its original release, Twitterrific finally supports native push notifications for new mentions, direct messages, followers, favorited tweets, and retweets. IMG_3489

Until today, Twitterrific users had to rely on a third-party service called Boxcar for notifications. Boxcar’s service has become somewhat finicky over the last few years and put a bit of a sour note on the launch of the completely refreshed interface in December. In fact, the lack of native push notifications was one of the biggest issues in our original review.

Unfortunately, the notifications aren’t available for all users just yet, and they are being considered a “beta” feature right now according to the Iconfactory. In fact, only 1,000 users will receive push notification access initially. These users will be granted access on a first-come, first-served basis. As with Tweetbot’s launch of push, “getting in” will just be a matter of installing the update, racing to the notifications settings, and enabling at least one option before all the slots are gone.

Once notifications are enabled for your Twitter account, you’ll be able to get notifications for that account on all of your devices. You’ll have to repeat the process for any other accounts you want notifications on. More users will be added to this pool in the coming weeks, but for now it’s just a matter of racing to be the first to get in.

Twitterrific 5.2 also has a few other new features and fixes:

The Week in Tweaks: Improved Pandora integration, live panoramic wallpapers, and more for your jailbroken iOS device

ThumbsUp – Free

thumbsup

ThumbsUp adds a few new ways to interact with your Pandora music. The primary method is a set of Activator actions that let you use gestures to thumb-up or thumb-down the current song. Another useful method (which is actually disabled by default) is a pair of buttons on the lock screen music controls that let you give feedback on the currently-playing song. You can turn the lockscreen buttons on in the tweak’s preferences inside the Settings app.

Thumbs Up is available for free on BigBoss.

Security hole reportedly allows anyone to reset your Apple ID password with email address and DOB (Updated 2x)

Site default logo image

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2TaAceHgyFE&start=10]

Update: Apple has taken the iForgot page offline “due to maintenance.” Now that it is safe, this is how it was done.

Update 2: iForgot is back online and the security hole has been fixed.

A “massive security hole” in Apple’s account management page discovered by The Verge allows anyone to reset your Apple ID password using nothing more than your birthday and email address, completely bypassing your security questions. The trick involves a modified URL that seems to fool the site into skipping the security questions and other verification steps, allowing anyone to gain access to your iTunes, App Store, and other Apple accounts within minutes.

If you use Apple’s iForgot page, you are directed to the options below after entering your email and DOB so it would appear that the hack gets around this.

Screen Shot 2013-03-22 at 2.54.12 PM

However, according to The Verge, your account is apparently safe from this exploit if you use Apple’s new 2-step authentication (instructions in video above. J/K go here).

Way to go Apple in getting everyone on board with the 2-step!

Review: Is the Ampjacket for iPhone anything to get amped about?

Site default logo image

ampjacket

When I used to work an overnight shift at my old job, my coworkers and I had a habit of pulling out our phones and blasting music while we worked. I always thought it was a bit odd that my iPhone 5’s speaker was so much quieter than those of the low-end Android phones many of the other employees carried. It’s not something that happens often outside of that job, but sometimes I find that my phone is just too quiet.

There are a variety of cases on the market that purport to solves this problem without any additional speakers. Most of these just work by putting a small cupped piece of plastic behind the speaker to direct the sound toward the front of the phone. I’ve been summarily unimpressed with these cases.

When I saw the Ampjacket by Kubxlab, the distinct design caught my eye. Instead of a cupped piece of plastic, the Ampjacket redirects the audio from the iPhone’s to a two-way amplification chamber built into the back of the case. Could that be the key to finally getting improved volume out of the iPhone, or would it prove to be just another dud?

The Ampjacket is available for the iPhone 5, fifth-generation iPod touch, and iPad mini. The model reviewed here is specifically for the iPhone 5.

The Week in Tweaks: iTunes 11’s Up Next, a dedicated guest mode, and more for your jailbroken iOS device

Cyueue – $2.49

The “Up Next” feature in iTunes 11 made a lot of people very happy, but the feature was unfortunately never brought to iOS by Apple. To remedy this, the creator of Cydia has published a new tweak that adds this functionality to the built-in Music app. To use it, you just tap a song while another song is playing. You’ll be presented with three options. “Play now” simply stops the current song and starts the new one. “Play next” adds the new song to the beginning of a special playlist and automatically goes to the new song when the previous one has finished playing. The last option, “Play last,” adds the new song to the very end of the playlist and gets to it after playing through the rest of the songs. Cyueue is $2.49 and is available on Saurik’s built-in repository.
