History

The original Apple Watch (later called Series 0) was released on April 24, 2015, after years of rumors. While there was a lot of initial hype around it, the third-party watchOS apps were slow to launch due to API limitations. Native apps were available in watchOS 2. The original watch came in 38mm and 42mm sizes.

The Series 2 Watch was released on September 16th, 2016 along with a Series 1 Watch. The Series 2 included the S2 chip, built-in GPS, and water-proof construction. The Series 1 included the S2, but lacked GPS and waterproofing.

The Series 3 Watch was released on September 22, 2017, and it included an LTE option and the S3 chip. The Series 4 Watch was released on September 21, 2018. New hardware included the S4 Chip, Electrical heart sensor w/ ECG app, and larger display (40mm and 44mm sizes).

Apple Watch Series 5 was announced during Apple’s fall event on September 10, 2019. Customers were able to purchase the device later that day, and it was released on September 20. The headline feature for this model was the wearable’s always-on display. The new display always shows the time and complications and is also the first from the company to include a built-in compass.

Apple launched international emergency services to every cellular model. Series 5 also brought back ceramic white, and new natural brush and space black titanium models.

Apple Watch Series 6 was unveiled on September 15, 2020 at the “Time Flies” event alongside the more affordable SE and new iPad Air. New features of the Series 6 include blood oxygen monitoring, new watch colors, faster S6 chip, new watch faces, and more.

Mini-review: Enveo Chestnut Dock, an attractive charging dock for the Apple Watch

When I reviewed the FŪZDock Apple Watch nightstand almost a year ago, I described it as ‘a neat, affordable solution which will work well with Nightstand mode.’ It’s done the job well enough that I hadn’t bothered looking for an alternative, but I’d describe the design as unobtrusive rather than positively attractive.

So when a Danish company realized my weakness for wood, and sent me the Enveo Chestnut Dock, I switched out the FŪZDock to give it a try …

Casetify offering Olympics-inspired Apple Watch bands in various national colors

Site default logo image

Last week we saw watch accessory maker Clockwork Synergy release a Pride version of its NATO Apple Watch band, inspired by the limited-edition band Apple gave to employees in the San Francisco Pride Parade. Now, accessory company Casetify has released a collection of Apple Watch bands that sport the respective flags of two countries competing in the Olympics. Casetify’s offering comes as Apple is selling national color-inspired bands itself, but only in Brazil.

KGI: New Apple Watch 2 coming late 2016 with GPS, better waterproofing and improved performance, retain same design

Site default logo image

Apple Watch 2 is indeed imminent, according to reliable Apple analyst KGI’s Ming-Chi Kuo. Although there have been a lack of leaks about the upcoming new Watch, KGI says the device will launch in late 2016 (likely announced alongside the iPhone 7 in September) and feature several flagship changes.

The new Apple Watch will include a GPS, barometer, waterproofing beyond what is already touted with Apple Watch 1 as well as a new internal SoC for faster performance. However, KGI does not expect the physical design of the watch to change with this generation.

You can finally buy a rainbow Pride Apple Watch band just like Apple’s exclusive employee bands

A little more than a month ago Apple gave a limited-edition rainbow colored Apple Watch band to its employees who marched in San Fransisco’s LGBT Pride parade. With no official release in sight and no worthy alternatives on the market, it seemed the only way to get your hands on one was to pay insane eBay prices. But that’s all changed this morning. Clockwork Synergy, a watch accessory maker based in Maryland, has just launched a Pride version of its Classic NATO Apple Watch band featuring a rainbow design that looks nearly identical to the one Apple gifted its employees. What’s more, both bands are made of nylon.

Samsung seemingly attempting to patent … the Apple Watch

The never-ending patent battle between Apple and Samsung may have the design world on Apple’s side, but that doesn’t seem to be deterring Samsung from seeking to copy more Apple products. Patently Apple spotted what looks to be exact drawings of the Apple Watch in a patent application for a ‘wearable device’ filed by Samsung just yesterday.

Barclays hopes that ‘poor man’s Apple Watch’ might help bPay compete with Apple Pay

When Apple Pay officially went live in the UK almost a year ago, it was supported by every major bank except Barclays, which waited a further nine months before joining in. The reason was because Barclays was trying to push its own mobile payment service, bPay – which is actually just a contactless card chip embedded into a variety of physical objects.

Comment: AppleCare+ to the rescue if you rely on Apple Watch

Site default logo image

Fitness tracking with the Apple Watch really kicked in for me a few months ago, and now I’m obsessed with filling the Activity rings and improving my health. So when I woke up Tuesday morning and discovered what looked like a small blotch of blue ink under the glass of my Apple Watch, I sort of freaked out. I have a Move streak going and just a few days left before the Perfect Month achievement in the Activity app kicks in, so I really didn’t want to go a day without my Apple Watch.

Apple Stores still don’t swap out Apple Watches on location even with AppleCare; unlike iPhones, every Apple Watch has to be mailed off for repair or replacement. Thanks to some helpful chat support and AppleCare+, however, I learned a few things and managed not to wreck my streak…

Review: Monowear Brown Leather Deployant band for Apple Watch [Video]

The folks over at Monowear sent over one of its bands for me to try, and I shot a brief video showcasing the band in action. Monowear makes several band styles from leather, mesh, nylon and metal. The band it sent over is a brown leather band featuring a handy deployant clasp. The deployant clasp creates a perpetual look that makes the leather band super-easy to put on and take off. Have a look at our video review inside to see it in action.

iPhone 7 now seems likely to come in Space Black to match Apple Watch, as other rumors emerge

While a previous Macotakara report suggested that the iPhone 7 would be available in a deep blue color, replacing Space Gray, the blog is now suggesting that this is not the *case*.

I have heard another information that space grey would not be disconnected, but would be possibly updated to much darker color. Also, the new color would not be deep blue, but possibly formal black which is close to black.

This tallies with something heard from one of our own sources …

2017 Apple Watch reportedly switching to Micro-LED screen technology, away from OLED panels

According to the latest story by Digitimes, Apple will reportedly be moving away from OLED screen technology for Apple Watch … at the same time as the iPhone 8 (for 2017, iPhone 7 will continue to use LCD) adopts OLED. The supply chain source says Apple is instead developing Micro LED panels for Apple Watch, to debut in late 2017.

The Dock in watchOS 3 breathes new life into the Apple Watch [Video]

Site default logo image

The Dock in watchOS 3 was arguably the biggest new feature to hit the Apple Watch at WWDC 2016. It’s a feature that allows you to find and switch to your most used apps. It takes the best of the Glances model from previous versions of watchOS and merges it with an updated and actionable interface.

The Dock promotes using apps in a way that no such feature on the Apple Watch has until now. In my opinion, it breathes new life into the Apple Watch, providing practical functionality that was missing in previous iterations of watchOS. Have a look at our hands-on dive into the Dock as we explore this exciting new feature.

Apple Watch Diary: Apple Pay saved the day when I left my wallet at home

Going out without your wallet or purse is something most of us have done at some time or another. When I did it four or five years ago, it was a complete pain as it was on a Saturday afternoon and no banks were open.

Picture the scene: I’m on my own in the car, call into a gas station to refuel, get to the till and … no wallet. Not the most convenient of times to discover one’s absent-mindedness. Fortunately I have a great bank. I called them, and they gave me an authorization number to give to the gas station attendant, who was able to put the transaction through.

But when I managed to leave my wallet at home on Friday evening, Apple Pay made it a non-event …

Hands-on: iOS 10 + watchOS 3 Home app for HomeKit on iPhone, iPad, & Apple Watch

HomeKit, Apple’s smart home accessory framework, is gaining some much needed attention in iOS 10 and watchOS 3 thanks to a new built-in Home app for iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. Apple previously relied on third-party apps from accessory makers to control the HomeKit experience, using Siri as the only first-party controller, and various apps like the third-party Home app and Hesperus filled in the void.

Apple’s new Home app comes with a modern look, relatively easy-to-use controls, and access to accessories and scenes from anywhere on iOS 10. Check out our hands-on below to see Apple’s Home app for iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch in action.
