Just released:

1. Karateka | $2.99: Jordan Mechner, creator of the popular Prince of Persia franchise, and developer of the original fighter classic “Karateka” for the Apple II, is today bringing an HD remake of the game to iOS. Available on the App Store now for $2.99 for iPhone and iPad, the remake of the original 1984 fighter looks to essentially be a port of work done on the HD remake released on consoles last month. The video above features Mechner talking about the remake and comparing the original Apple II version to the new iOS title.

Created on an Apple II by Jordan Mechner in his Yale dorm room, Karateka became a #1 bestseller and influenced a generation of gamers with its groundbreaking rotoscoped animation and cinematic cutscenes… 28 years later, Mechner returns to his indie roots with a new take on Karateka for today’s digital game platforms, featuring art by Jeff Matsuda (The Batman) and music by Grammy-winning composer Christopher Tin (Civilization IV).

2. Ravensword: Shadowlands | $6.99

Google makes Quickoffice iPad app free to Google Apps for Business customers

Google made some announcements today regarding its work with the Quickoffice team since acquiring the company in June. On top of noting work to take advantage of Quickoffice conversion technology in Google Docs, Google launched a free version of the QuickOffice iPad app exclusively for Google Apps for Business customers today. There are also free iPhone and Android versions of the app for creating and editing Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files coming to Apps customers in the near future:

Converting old files to Google Docs, Sheets and Slides is the easiest way to share and work together, but perhaps not everyone you work with has gone Google yet. To complement what you can do with Google documents, we’re also making it easier for you to make quick edits to Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint files without conversion. Starting today, the Quickoffice iPad app is available for free to all Apps for Business customers, and iPhone and Android versions are on the way.

Vice President of Google Enterprise Amit Singh welcomed the announcement on his Twitter account: “Customers can now get Quickoffice for free. No need to license microsoft for your ipad.”

FTC updates online child privacy law to require parental consent for data collection, exempts App Store

The Wall Street Journal reported today that the U.S. Federal Trade Commission has announced its decision to update its more than 10-year-old law governing the privacy of children online. The changes mean app developers and websites will be required to obtain parental consent when collecting photos, videos, geolocation information, or tracking behavior of children 13 and under. However, as noted in the report, the updated rules have been altered since originally proposed in August and would not require third-party plug-ins, like Facebook Like buttons, or app platforms, such as the App Store, to enforce the law:

in a departure from rule changes the government proposed in August, third-party “plug-ins” on websites—things like Facebook Inc.’s “Like” button and ads placed by advertising networks—will only have to meet child online privacy regulations if they have “actual knowledge” that they’re collecting information through a website or app that targets kids…

Apple made that point in five meetings with FTC officials in the fall. The FTC responded by explicitly exempting the Apple App Store and Google Play, the app store for mobile devices running Google’s Android software, from having to make sure that the apps they provided complied with Coppa.

Mossberg agrees with Pogue: Google Maps is the best…on iPhone

The New York Times’ technology columnist David Pogue said last week that even Google thought its iOS Maps app is better than the Android version, mostly because that version just piled on feature after feature without a rethink.

Walt Mossberg agrees:

However, the biggest news here is that the new iPhone version of Google Maps isn’t just better than Apple Maps. For now, at least, Google Maps is better in most respects on the iPhone than it is on Android phones. It has been redesigned with a cleaner, simpler user interface that makes it easier to use. Google officials say they took the sudden need to build a new iPhone version as an opportunity to rethink the popular app from the ground up.

Google is supposedly looking to rebuild its Android version based on what it did for the iPhone app.

Steinberg, makers of popular digital audio workstation Cubase and innovators of the VST format for virtual instruments and plug-ins, this week announced the release of a new iPad app. Not surprising to anyone familiar with Cubase on the desktop, the “Cubasis” iPad app at first glance appears to go well beyond the functionality of Apple’s Garageband. Facebook opens up the ability to install apps directly from ads in iOS app

Facebook announced on its Developer Blog today (via TechCrunch) that it is improving its mobile app install ads by providing a number of new options for both users and developers when viewing and creating ads. Perhaps the most interesting is the ability for iOS 6 users to install apps from ads within the Facebook iOS app without leaving the app—a feature Apple opened up to developers with iOS 6. In other words, ads in the Facebook app will no longer pull you into the App Store. This allows users to download the app within a dialog inside the Facebook app (as pictured above):

Mobile app install ads drive installs by taking people directly to the App Store or Google Play. Now, people on iOS 6 can install an app without leaving their Facebook experience. When they click on an ad, the App Store will appear in another dialog box. After installing the app, they will be able to continue where they left off on Facebook.

Facebook is also rolling out other features for advertisers, including the ability to customize ads “directly from the app dashboard, power editor, or the ads API” and view demographic breakdowns for app installs by age, gender, country, and more.

9to5Mac has once again scoured the App Store for all the latest app launches, price drops, noteworthy news, and updates, and we have compiled everything in a roundup below. Check it out, but keep coming back as we continually refresh the list throughout the day.

Just Released

1. Static | 99 cents
Static just landed on the App Store today and tracks how well users are doing in their favorite social channels (i.e., Twitter, Instagram, Analytics, Dribbble, and GitHub). The app’s description gives the following summary: “Just added an Instagram photo? Just published a blog post? How much traffic did you get as a result? How many new followers did you gain on Twitter? Instead of hopping back and forth between apps you can see your most important social stats from one screen.” Check out the promo video above for more details.

2. Scanner Mini | Free
Scanner Mini by Readdle launched today, and it basically converts an image into a scan, detects borders, removes shadows, corrects perspective, and spits out a PDF file in 5 seconds. To sum up its new scanning app, Readdle said: “We put the core functionality of Scanner Pro into Scanner Mini, and giving it away absolutely for free as a Christmas present to all iOS users!”

Amazon smartphone reportedly in production, set to go on sale in mid-2013

Rumors have been in the air for several months that claim Amazon will compete in the handset space with its own offering, much like it did with its Kindle Fire line of tablets. According to a new report from the Taiwan Economic News, the Internet retail giant has selected the infamous Foxconn to manufacture the handset. Additionally, Amazon is said to have ordered 5 million units and will launch the device at $100 to $200 sometime in the second quarter or third quarter of 2013.

The Kindle Fire line of tablets, which has software based off Android with many custom additions (and even more subtractions), has done wonders for Android’s tablet marketshare, helping the platform close the seemingly insurmountable gap with the iPad. Amazon was the first to offer a tablet at such a low cost, selling in seemingly big numbers. However, no specific figures have ever been given. Many saw the $199 Kindle Fire as a cheaper alternative to the $499 iPad, but things may change this holiday season with the iPad mini now available at $329.

With its large online marketplace and bevy of apps on its Amazon Appstore, we wouldn’t put it past the company to be a serious competitor in the handset game—at least for the Android devotees and the relatively small footprint of countries where Amazon operates/offers content. (via Engadget)

Just in time for the holidays, Apple has restored the ability for a user to buy (“gift”) an App Store app for another App Store user via an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. The gifting feature, which was present for iOS 5 and below, never launched with iOS 6. Apple did not explain why, but it likely had to do with iOS 6 featuring a redesigned iOS App Store. To gift an app, a user needs to click the action sheet button and then click the gift button. Users can even specify when the application should be delivered (up to 90 days advance).

Known jailbreak tweak FullForce makes full screen Google Maps run well on iPad

Site default logo image

FullForce, which is a tweak available via Cydia for Jailbroken iPads, has been allowing users for a couple of years now to force iPhone apps into full screen without the distortion of the 2x zoom feature that iOS provides. Not all apps include assets that would scale up nicely using the app, but the developers keep a list of compatible apps for users through Cydia. As noted by a 9to5Mac reader, Google’s just-released iOS Maps app appears to scale and run perfectly on the iPad using FullForce—apart from a few elements (such as the sidebar)— that are clearly not designed for the iPad’s larger display.

While FullForce will get jailbroken iPad users by until Google releases an iPad version of its new iPhone Maps app, we’re hoping someone is working hard on a tweak that will make Google Maps the default Maps app on iOS. A gallery of Google Maps running on an iPad with FullForce below:

* Use gestures to explore the map and browse results.

The free application arrives following several rumors about the app, and comes in the weeks following Apple’s official launch of iOS 6. iOS 6 was the first version of iOS to not include a Maps app with a Google backend. Instead, it uses Apple’s own backend that has been the source of much controversy. So much controversy that two senior Apple employees who worked on the project, Scott Forstall and Richard Willamson, were pushed out of Apple for reasons relating to the app’s flaws relating to data reliability.

Even with flawed data, Apple’s new Maps application has been praised for its speedier design, 3D Flyover feature, and turn-by-turn data. However, it lacks the popular Street View and Transit directions features from the Google Maps-based app found on Apple mobile devices prior to iOS 6’s release.

Most people will tell you that you need to use a strong password on every website you use, and to use a different password on each site. Remembering all of those passwords and usernames can be a hassle though.

Up until September of 2011, I used the same password, or a variation of it, on nearly every website I used. One day I realized that was pretty stupid. After a service I used had been hacked and thousands of passwords had been stolen (thankfully mine was not included), I decided it was time to get smart with my passwords. I purchased 1Password at the recommendation of several users that I knew and have not looked back since.

I initially imagined it would be difficult to deal with a browser plugin and an iPhone app for storing all of my login info, but it proved to be much easier than I thought. In fact, it was so easy that I started recommending it to everyone I know.

Today, 1Password for iOS has received a complete overhaul. The update is pricey, but is it worth the money? Dive into the full review after the break to find out.

According to AllThingsD, Google plans to release its long-rumored Google Maps for iOS application tonight. The report does not share any details about the application’s features, or which Apple devices it will work with. However, previous rumors point to the application including the turn-by-turn navigation support that Google would not offer in Apple’s Google Maps app in iOS versions prior to iOS 6. Additionally, rumored screenshots of the application reportedly leaked out a couple of months ago, but those images have yet to be confirmed or corroborated as legitimate.

Apple’s iOS devices included a Maps app with a Google backend up until version iOS 6. Apple’s in-house Maps application includes a 3D Flyover mode, turn-by-turn directions, and Yelp integration. However, even with those helpful features, the application has been filled with controvrsy over unreliable data, broken satellite imagery, and other errors. Apple’s former iOS Senior Vice President and a Senior iOS engineer, Scott Forstall and Rich Williamson, have even both been pushed out of the company in connection to the iOS 6 Maps app.
