TUAWnotes that low-cost European airline Easyjet is now offering boarding passes in Passbook. While this is commonplace for US airlines, Passbook adoption in Europe has been very much slower, with just a handful of companies supporting it at present.

Boost Mobile, a prepaid US carrier powered by Sprint’s network, will be the latest carrier to add the iPhone to their lineup, according to Twitter user @evleaks. The phone is claimed to launch in Q3, and will make Boost the fourth prepaid carrier in the United States to carry Apple’s smartphone.
Sprint’s other prepaid holding, Virgin Mobile, has carried the iPhone since June of 2012 and recently launched a bizarrely awesome ad campaign to lure customers away from other networks. A competing prepaid carrier, Cricket, has also carried the iPhone since June. Straight Talk became the third big prepaid iPhone carrier in January of 2013.
According to internal Apple documentation, the original iPhone, which first debuted in 2007, will soon enter “obsolete” status, with a few exceptions. The official switch will happen on June 11, 2013, when the iPhone, along with several other Macs and Xserve models will officially be classified as vintage and obsolete products by Apple. Thanks, G!
Earlier today Google officially pushed out an update to its existing Google Search app for iPhone enabling the Google Now service with weather and traffic conditions, updates on breaking news and sports, and more. Some users logging into Google Search through a Google Apps account might have noticed that using the features would prompt an error that “your administrator hasn’t enabled Google Now for your domain.” Hanselman.com shares instructions on enabling the feature which aren’t exactly obvious since the setting is buried in “Android settings”.

App-based messaging has overtaken SMS messaging for the first time, according to new figures released by research company Informa (via BBC News).
Informa said almost 19 billion messages were sent per day on chat apps in 2012, compared with 17.6 billion SMS texts … It has projected that nearly 50 billion messages will be sent per day using these apps by 2014, compared with just over 21 billion traditional SMSs. However, it said that despite the growing gap between the two, SMS will continue to remain a key player in the sector.
Chat apps like WhatsApp may be dominating on smartphones, but around half the global market still uses featurephones, and of course there are less tech-savvy smartphone users who remain oblivious to alternatives. Businesses remain keen on SMS too, said Informa spokesperson Pamela Clark-Dickson “as it can be used on all mobile phones and they do not need smartphones to use it.”
Informa thus predicts that SMS revenue will continue to grow, from $115bn in 2012 to $127bn by 2016.

Google is also working to bring some voice functionality to its desktop website. While Google Now has a voice component that has been compared to Apple’s Siri on many occasions, the essence of the feature is truly to provide timely, location based information.

Detailed tests of the iPhone 5 and Galaxy S4 screens by display calibration and testing specialist DisplayMate has declared the result a draw.
The detailed test results cover color gamut and accuracy, brightness, power efficiency and performance in high ambient lighting. DisplayMate compared the S4’s OLED screen to the LCD screen of the iPhone 5, highlighting the strengths & weaknesses of each and overall declaring it a tie.
The iPhone 5 is now more than half way through its product cycle, which is important to keep in mind for our comparison. However, high-end LCDs like the iPhone 5 are a very mature and refined display technology, so other than screen size, resolution, and the Pixels Per Inch not much is likely to change in the next generation, no matter what Apple decides to do. The iPhone 5 is significantly brighter than the Galaxy S4, particularly for screens with mostly peak white backgrounds. Its color calibration is a bit better, although the Galaxy S4 has a more accurate White. The Galaxy S4 has a much bigger screen, higher resolution, higher PPI, much darker blacks, and better screen uniformity than the iPhone 5. Conversion apps feel like a design playground, with so much potential for uniqueness and variety in their interfaces. The trend has been towards multifunction, multi-purpose Swiss-army knife apps that attempt to cover a whole range of disparate measurements. In my experience, as a result of racing to add one more ratio to their feature list, the simplicity of these apps suffer.
Currency sidesteps this battleground entirely and, as the name implies, focuses solely on converting amounts of money. The app touts support for over 160 currencies from around the world, which was more than enough to satisfy my needs. The app surfaces a handful of common currencies at first launch, each accompanied with a beautiful representation of its respective country’s flag.
Apple’s cheer at the generally positive market reaction to its quarterly report may be somewhat muted by the news that iPhone sales fell at both AT&T and Sprint.

After posting this on HackerNews some developers / users feel my hypothesis is wrong and one can not repeat the steps below without having physical access to an user’s phone or locked devices. I agree to this. I also need to check for on which iOS version this is secure. Because as per as I remember, this is definitely doable in earlier version of iOS. But the original problem still remains same. These files are unencrypted and unprotected and one can copy your entire mail contents if he/she has access to your phone.
File Protection API won’t be enough to protect data for unlocked phones. For which one might require to encrypt documents or files with a key and the key being stored in some secure location.
I am building some concept apps to try out few things. Stay tuned …

Apple has won the last of six patent infringement claims filed by Motorola, after the US International Trade Commission agreed with Apple that the patent was invalid for ‘lack of novelty’, aka being too obvious.
When you lift your iPhone to your face to make or receive a call, the touchscreen is disabled to prevent accidental input. Motorola claimed to have patented this approach, Apple argued that it was an obvious thing to do and the USITC has agreed with them. The other claims by Motorola, dismissed previously, related to wifi, 3G and UMTS.
Apple has recently added a new option for iTunes purchases on both the Mac and iOS devices running iTunes 11 and iOS 6 or later. Now, when purchasing content that includes a large download, such as movies or seasons of TV shows, iTunes will allow users to complete the purchase and opt to download the file at a later time. As noted by Macworld, Apple outlined the new option, which presents users with a dialog to “Download” now or download “Later”, in a recently updated knowledge base article.
Selecting the new “Later” option will add the purchased content to your “Purchased” tab in iTunes in the Cloud, meaning the feature is only available to those in countries that support iTunes in the Cloud (full list here). According to Apple’s knowledge base article, the option applies to content including: TV seasons, season passes, movie bundles, music box sets, or individual movies and TV episodes. We’re beginning to wonder whether Apple is doing a viral campaign on iPad build quality. First an iPad survived flying off a car roof, embedding itself in a bonnet and being hit by a hammer – now a different one (we assume) has survived being struck by a softball (BustedCoveragevia CNET).
