Walt Mossberg loves AppleTV...and 3G iPhone in 2 months!

Walt Mossberg talks about how the US cable companies and DSL providers are screwing the US over with tricks and slow speeds....  (Yah, you know you can get 100Mb Fiber in France for €50/month?)

...AppleTV is nice but currently has limited appeal because of bandwidth.....

Oh and a little bombshell....Says iPhone will be 3G in 60 days (at about 6:53 in)!  As someone who regularly gets to test Apple products way ahead of the public, he would know!  Update: He now says that is just n ducated guess.  Uh huh.

Go Walt!

50 euros for 100 MBit/s?

8281

50 euros for 100 MBit/s? That's great.

Here in Germany, a decent 16 MBit/s DSL connections costs - combined with online flatrate and unlimited countrywide fixed line calls - around 29 Euros a month (roughly 45 USD), while some providers even offer such packages for 24,90 Euros.

50 Euros is expensive!

6178

Here in Sweden I pay 235 SEK ≈ 25 Euro ≈ 39.50 USD for 100MBit/s fiber.
And I don't live in an apartment but in my own house, so it's like 500 m dedicated underground fiber to the nearest infrastructure switch. And the last 30 m over my house lot I had to dig myself ;-)

Wow I am jealous....I get here "10" Mb for 59.99 a month plus tax through Cablevision....what a rip off.

BTW...Germany could fit into the State of New Mexico. Lots of bang for the buck if you could lay fiber to 3 major cities and reach 90% of its' population.

Riiight...

7472

3 Major cities = 90% of the popluation? Got a Wikipedia quote to back that up? Germany, although very dense, isn't just three mega-cities and the last 10% live in small farms... Germany's cities are all over the place, and although it's true they have a high concentration of people in these cities, so does america...

we should do something about

We from the usa should do something about.. we can't just let these companies rip us off.. what can we do?

Now who could that be?? clinton? she doesn't seen like the person who surfs the web that much, even though her husband supposedly helped the web in his presidency.. Obama idk he doesn't seen like that guy neither. . Mccain is another bush... which just pocket the money from whatever lobist... so that means we are screwed. well unless somebody knows more than me about any of them..

Politicians = President?

Politicians = President? President isn't the only office, right?

It is the office of the

7075

It is the office of the supreme commander. And during times of war, like now, the presidential position trumps all other branches and positions of the government and its people.

Wow.

7782

That's just fantastic. Really, your idea of how the government works is just so FASCINATING!

My boss is a politician. You've probably even heard of him. Well, not you, of course, but other people here. I should let him know that he doesn't need to do any work until this whole "war" thing blows over.

I guess you're right

7978

"so that means we are screwed. well unless somebody knows more than me about any of them.."

That seems quite unlikely!

John P, you should have your own TV show. Your opinions are very valuable.

This news can't be good for

This news can't be good for the short-term price of AAPL's stock!

The WOLF on CNBC's "FAST MONEY" said on Friday that AAPL has run out of current stock and that the LOW VOLUME run up MOMENTUM FAST MONEY rise on AAPL last week from 142.52 - 154.715 was because the current iPOHNE is out of stock almost everywhere and that a new iPHONE might be the reason and be out as early as next week (meaning this coming week)

If Mossberg is right and he is saying 60 days now till 3g then AAPL will sell off in a very big way next week!

especially since it's rise from 142.52 to 154.715 last week was all on less than average volume!!!

thoughts welcome?

I could see AAPL on this news trading back under 130.00 next week!

AAPL's stock is still one of the strongest...

6574

The ups and downs of trading on AAPL's stock isnt from long-term investors; it's only from guys who are trying to make a quick buck. If AAPL trades at anything over $100 I think they'd be happy- many other industries are now trading under $10!

If investors are banking only on AAPL's immediate success, then they deserve to have a roller-coaster ride. AAPL is currently one of the most stable companies around. Don't like it's current stock upswing for no reason- check out Bear Stearns :)

France

France has very advance home devices for the Internet.
I pay 29 Euro and I get 28 Mb., television, a wifi router and telephone service all in the same little box.

So I get....

Telephone FREE CALLS UNLIMITED!!!
TV
Internet
A router for all my puters...
all int he same box...

And guess what that's pretty average in France.
29 euro for all this... for downloading all I want at blazing fast speeds, for making international calls for free... for watching 200+ tv channels...

Don't believe me ???

Bill Moyers did a segment on what politicians did...

7565

The major telco's were given huge tax breaks and I believe they were even given mega-bucks from DC to help them 'build out' the 'next generation' of fast connections. There were plans for video phones and scorching fast Ethernet.

What happened?

The phone companies, after getting the mega-bucks from DC said that they 'couldn't do it' that 'their reach exceeded their grasp' and they stopped working on it. Well, and DC let them keep the money.

What's keeping America in the land of overpriced crap internet connections? GREED and STUPIDITY!

But those CEO's need their private jets and fancy offices and huge homes... Well, and DC needs a brain transplant!

Here in Lund every student basically have 100Mbit for about 8€ a month. however the normal is more 10-24mbit for about 20€
it is a pity US lags so far behind so companies like Apple has to press the "brakes" of whats possible

I can understand mossberg being "frustrated"

McCain supports expanded broadband development.

"When Ronald Reagan took office, a Blackberry was something you used to make jam; today it is a vital link in a wireless communication network that spans the globe. The broadband revolution is transforming every facet of communications from the Internet to entertainment to telephone service to the delivery of health care services to supply chain management. Yet over the last decade, America has dropped from 2nd in the world to 19th in broadband development and connectivity. In the real world of global competition if we don't reverse those trends, we will risk our prosperity and leave many Americans in rural areas far behind the rest of us."

He's more anti-dialup.

"...leave many Americans in rural areas far behind the rest of us."

He's talking to the "red" parts of the voter's map there, shoring up the Repub base. That's for the people that have a speed ending with a Kb/sec instead of Mb/sec. Which is part of the picture but nothing to do with, if not with interests somewhat at odds with, widespread [urban] 100Mb/sec rates.

7080

Here in Tokyo, Japan I've been getting 100Mb fiber for the past 3 years for just ¥1,300 ($13) a month! I moved into a brand new building that had fiber already hard wired throughout the building when it was built. One of the very few things where Japan exceeds other countries in tech. One lack for example, there is absolutely no wi-fi, free or pay, available in Tokyo, save for a random mom and popl cafe here and there (or McMurder).

Seattle, 49 $ 6 MBit/s down 0.5 MBit/s up on Cable. And depending how many people watch their favourite show the Bits go down. Comcast by the way. I hope I will find something better soon.

For what it's worth - I spoke to someone at Telstra recently who said they've secured the contract, and that it'll be out "sooner than you think". I'm guessing July - possibly as early as late June though.
