Wanna have a shot at getting a 3G iphone without having to wait on line for the model you didn't want? Top Muffin has the "iPhone3G Store availability tracker" which updates its page based on Apple's JSON feed. It looks like it works pretty well but the proof is in the pudding.
It might be worth a few extra minutes to give a call to you Apple store just to double check in case...

Just a thought - If the a person has the ability to use the app, they must have an iPhone which means they don't need to check availability (besides those who only have the 1st gen).

Used the app and saw stock levels for my local store change from none to two models, went to the store and they had nothing, app still says they have 2 models in stock (6 hours later). Not so sure the accuracy can be trusted at all

iPhone Availability Tool
I'm curious as to where this information is coming from. I was told by my local Apple store manager that this online availability tool only shows the remaining stock at the end of that day. It doesn't tell you anything about shipments arriving on that day. Also, I've read comments from others who are apparently seeing actual counts that are being regularly updated? I'm just seeing green check marks or red X's.
reThinkijng my switch to
reThinkijng my switch to Apple, This muffin proved that Apple knows that the entire US is sold out of Iphones shortly after they open. Yet the only availability they show at 9pm indicates that about 50% stock. I hard to learn the hard way walking to all 3 NYC stores that showed stock this morning to see a beautiful sign that says "Sorry Folks" , very wallyworld. Why can't they just be open about inventory and save their loyal customer a ton of frustration

Evidently, Apple did not like their 3G iPhone availability data being used outside of apple.com.
They have changed all inventory values to NULL in their JSON file. I guess it beats a cease-and-desist letter.

"Proof is in the Pudding"
Mulag says, "You suck." THE QUOTE IS, "The proof is in the putting". Get it? In the putting? As in, the proof of the claim is demonstrated in the claim being actualized...
Mulag won't destroy you if you promise to remember and tell all your friends: the proof is in the putting.
Lots of confusion
First off, I just checked the JSON file and it seems to be fine right now.
I am pretty sure that everyone seems to be misunderstanding the way this is working. Apple uses the JSON file to display (after 9pm) the availability at stores for the next morning. They are not displaying current stock or remaining stock at the end of the day (as far as I can tell the remaining stock is always zero). Most likely, they get shipments during the day that aren't unpackaged and sent to the sales floor until after closing, these are the values from the JSON file.
During the day, it seems that Apple was updating the file with the next morning values (NOT the current value). These tracker sites sprang up and Apple probably set all the values to null just so customers would stop being confused.
I wanted to mention this to Top Muffin, but I didn't see any comments or email addys.
