Facebook iOS app now lets iPad users edit posts

Back in October Facebook added the ability to edit posts and comments and also view all of your changes. However, at the time the feature was only available to iPhone users. Today iPad users can finally edit posts too with an update to the Facebook iOS app that just rolled out on the App Store.

Also new in version 6.7 of the app is new languages for icons, but Facebook doesn’t list the specific languages in its release notes.

The Facebook app is available on the App Store for free.

Google Drive for iOS updated with multiple account support, printing

Following the significant revamp of Google’s iOS Search app earlier this week, the search company updated its Google Drive application for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch with several new features.

What’s New in Version 2.1.0

– Multiple Account Support. You can now switch between personal, work, or any other Google account
– Single Sign In: Sign in once to Google Drive and you’ll automatically be signed in to apps like YouTube, Google Maps, Chrome, and G+
– Print your files now with Google Cloud Print or AirPrint
– iOS 7 Support

Notably, users can now have multiple accounts on Drive for iOS and the app supports single-sign-on across Google apps on iOS. Also new is increased compatibility for iOS 7 and printing either via AirPrint or Google Cloud Print.

RunKeeper for iPhone updated with background walking detection, AirDrop sharing, more

RunKeeper, one of my favorite fitness apps for iPhone, received a notable update utilizing technologies for iPhone 5s owners.

RunKeeper now supports the iPhone 5s M7 chip, which allows the app to detect steps throughout the day without having to manage that activity within the app manually.

Version 4.1 also brings support for AirDrop (another example of the software being on the cutting edge) allowing users to share workouts with nearby friends as well as build your RunKeeper friends list by sending friend requests.

RunKeeper has a clean iOS 7 design and tends to quickly embrace hardware features and technologies (it even interacts with the Pebble smart watch) so check it out for free in the App Store.

Yahoo launches redesigned Finance iOS app w/ push notifications, interactive charts & more

If the lack of features in Apple’s stock Stocks app on iOS (also powered by Yahoo) just isn’t cutting it, Yahoo announced today the release of a completely redesigned Yahoo Finance iOS app with push notifications and much more.

The new app introduces a revamped UI alongside a number of new features. Perhaps the most notable feature is the ability to follow specific stocks and receive push notifications for breaking stories:

The Yahoo Finance app for iPhone and iPad was reimagined to deliver a beautiful personalized experience with a stream of top news and data based on your favorite stocks and interests. Apple releases Xcode 5.0.2 GM build to developers

Apple posted a new build of Xcode to its developer portal this evening. The new version is listed as the Golden Master build of 5.0.2, which is interesting considering the fact that there were no betas of this update. According to the change log, the only changes are some bug fixes, so don’t expect any groundbreaking new features.

After installation of Xcode, the iOS 7.0.3 simulator hangs on first launch for a period of time (eventually launching). This issue has been resolved. (15368009)

Running and Debugging
Launching a 64-bit application on a device from Xcode multiple times causes the device to stop responding (and require a soft-reset). This has been resolved. (15338361)

Apple takes Apple Store app Passbook gift card integration international

Back in October of 2012, Apple introduced the ability to purchase gift cards via the iPhone and iPod touch Apple Store application. These gift cards could then be shared via email to family and friends for use in the Apple Store. These gift cards could also be used via the Passbook application that Apple introduced with iOS 6. Since that time, the functionality has been exclusive to the United States, but today, Apple has taken it international.

Apple has updated the Apple Store app for several countries, including the United Kingdom, Canada, Italy, Australia, but not many of the countries in Europe in which we checked. Users in each of those countries can now buy Passbook-enabled gift cards through the application. There is no word on when the remaining European countries will see the feature.

Update: Three days after publishing this update, Apple also released a second update to address various bugs and other issues.

Spotify iOS app adds touring dates for artists, instant search w/ playlist & profile results, & new languages

The Spotify iOS app receives an updated today that brings a few new features along with version 0.9.0 of the iPhone and iPad app.

The first new feature is the addition of touring details and concert dates in the Artists view. It’s a feature that Spotify recently teamed up with Songkick to offer through its web interface.

In addition, Spotify says it has improved search with new instant results as you type and “the ability to search playlists and user profiles.”

The app has also added a number of new languages including full support for Japanese, Russian, and Indonesian.

After an all-new Tweetbot Twitter client from developer Tapbots arrived last week as version 3, it wasn’t long before the app became the top paid app in many countries around the world. As with any redesign of a popular app, some users have been asking about what features that were removed during the redesign could possibly return in future updates. Today Tapbots shared a couple new features that will be arriving in version 3.1, including the ability to use lists as your timeline and swipe to reply, favorite, or RT:

While there is no timeframe on when version 3.1 might be arriving other than “coming soon”, the developers previously said that new adjustable font settings (pictured in the screenshot above), a nighttime theme, an iPad redesign, and new swiping gestures are all in the plans for future releases.

Flipboard speeds up iOS app, freshens up the interface for iOS 7

Today, the popular Flipboard news reading app for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch has been updated with improvements to performance and the interface. Flipboard says that the new version is faster on all devices, and the app has also seen some interface enhancements to better fit-in with the iOS 7 interface aesthetic. The app previously gained compatibility with iOS 7’s Parallax motion sensing feature. The ability to change text size, more section tiles, bug fixes, and on-screen alerts for new items in feeds have also been added.

Google Maps for iOS updated with improved hotel search, tweaked transit directions

The Google Maps app for iPhone and iPad has been updated with a few changes to the hotel search feature and transit directions. When searching for a hotel, the app now presents some sponsored rates (ads, basically—but useful ones). You can also quickly access a map from the transit directions preview screen, as well as a list of upcoming departure times.

The app also include “bug fixes,” which are always nice. The complete change log is below.

iTunes Festival apps updated w/ live EPs from festival performers

Apple has updated its iTunes Festival app for iOS tonight, the app where users can access live streamed content from Apple’s month long musical festival held during September. While Apple has now removed the video content that was only available for a limited time, it has added a number of live EPs from festival performers. It’s also added the content to the iTunes Festival app on Apple TV and started promoting the EPs in iTunes on the Mac.

All of the albums were recorded live during the iTunes Festival last month at The Roadhouse art center in London.

The live EPs are available for select artists including Sigur Ros, Janelle Monae, The Lumineers, Queens of the Stone Age,  John Legend, Phox, and others, and run $10 and below depending on the number of songs on each album.

During Apple’s iPhone event in September, Tim Cook noted that the iTunes Festival event, now in its seventh year, reached around 100+ countries through its live streams with more than 20 million people applying for tickets to attend the live show.

Square Enix releases lite version of Deus Ex: The Fall for iPhone and iPad

Back in July, Square Enix released the mobile-exclusive game Deus Ex: The Fall as a tie-in to the popular console and PC franchise. Today the company published a free version of the game that allows players to run through the full game’s opening mission. Other than the limit on how far into the game you play, everything else is unrestricted.

Even though the iTunes requirements say that the iPhone 4 and fourth-generation iPod touch are compatible, the company notes in the app’s description that it will not actually run on those devices. Players looking to take the mobile Deus Ex experience for a test run can grab it now for free on iTunes.

CloudMagic brings cloud-powered email search to the iPhone

A brand-new mail client called CloudMagic launched today on the App Store. The app supports most email services and has all of the basic features you’d expect from a mail app. One CloudMagic feature blows most other apps away, though: search.

Rather than searching on your phone for a certain email and then remotely searching each individual mail account to find what you’re looking for, CloudMagic caches your entire mail account on their server and uses server-side search to find any message almost instantly. The search is powerful and intelligently suggests words and phrases that I found to be exactly what I was looking for.

Twitter for iPhone updated with in-line photos and Vine videos, quick-actions in the timeline

Twitter for iPhone was updated today to version 5.12, which includes in-line photos in the main timeline view rather than using photo links. Vine videos now show up in the timeline as well, although it seems other video services will still require you to tap a link first.

The update also adds buttons to quickly reply, retweet, or favorite a tweet without having to swipe or tap it first. The new version of Twitter for iPhone is available for free in the App Store now.

Facebook announces it will revamp Messenger apps with new design, phone number integration

In line with my report from earlier this month, Facebook has announced that it will be revamping its Android and iOS Messenger apps. As we previously noted, the new apps have an entirely new design that is flatter and distinct from the standard Facebook application on Android and iOS. The Verge was given a preview of the Android version has some new features besides the new design:

In terms of functionality, there are a host of under-the-hood improvements to make sending and receiving messages faster, says product manager Peter Martinazzi. There are also some front-end tweaks that makes the app faster — especially on Android, where the SMS texting feature, which let you text friends who don’t have Facebook, has been removed.

The highlight feature, however, of the new apps is phone number integration. The repot summarizes the functionality as a WhatsApp competitor:

While Facebook won’t let you text a phone number from Messenger, the company plans to use phone numbers in a new way: to identify its users, just like in WhatsApp. Upon opening Messenger for the first time, it will ask you to provide your phone number. Then, the app can match you with people whose numbers you have, but whom you aren’t Facebook friends with. Facebook guarantees your messages will reach somebody’s inbox if you have their phone number.

The Android version is available as a test with a limited number of users beginning today and iOS in the near-future. Also incoming, we previously reported, are updates to the main Facebook app that integrate Graph Search, but Facebook has not confirmed this as of yet.

Amazon releases Cloud Player app for Mac

Amazon announced today that it’s releasing Amazon Cloud Player for Mac, a desktop client for its Amazon Cloud Player service that was previously released only for PC users earlier this year. You’ll be able to store all of your Amazon and iTunes music, browse and purchase Amazon MP3’s 25 million strong song catalog to purchase new songs, and also take advantage of features like AutoRip for getting free digital copies of CDs or vinyl purchased through Amazon’s AutoRip collection.

Once uploading and purchasing music for your Amazon Cloud Player app through the new Mac App, you’ll be able to access your whole collection on any device through apps for iPhone, iPad, iPod, Android devices, Roku, Sonos, and Samsung TVs.

You can download the Amazon Cloud Player for Mac app for free here. The 45MB download is available for Macs running OS X 10.6 and up.
