Apple Park

Apple Park is Apple's new, 175-acre corporate campus. Its 2.8 million-square-foot main building, or "spaceship," is considered to be one of the most energy-efficient buildings on earth. The campus and nearby visitor center opened in 2017, and will house over 12,000 employees.

First announced by Steve Jobs in 2006, Apple kicked off construction on its new 175-acre “Campus 2” in late 2013 and was expected to start moving in more than 12,000 of its employees in April 2017. The campus, located approximately one mile east of its current headquarters in Cupertino, California is also often referred to as the Apple “Spaceship” due to the appearance of the site’s main circular building.

CEO Tim Cook explained why Apple Park’s theater was named after the late Steve Jobs:

To honor his memory and his enduring influence on Apple and the world, the theater at Apple Park will be named the Steve Jobs Theater. Opening later this year, the entrance to the 1,000-seat auditorium is a 20-foot-tall glass cylinder, 165 feet in diameter, supporting a metallic carbon-fiber roof. The Steve Jobs Theater is situated atop a hill — one of the highest points within Apple Park — overlooking meadows and the main building.

Apple Park also houses a visitor center with an exclusive corporate store and mini Caffè Macs. The visitor center opened to public in November 2017.

Apple shares details & photos of Campus 2 ‘Theatre’ where it will hold future product launches

Apple today shared new photos from within the currently under construction Campus 2 (via Mashable), as well as previously unknown details about the site set to become the company’s new headquarters when construction completes early next year.

The most impressive shots and most of the new details surround the on-site auditorium separate from the main building, where the company will indeed hold future press events. That was expected, but Mashable seems to have gotten the inside scoop from Apple and notes the company is calling the auditorium “Theatre” internally and that it will be “the new stage where Apple will publicly debut its products to the media and, ultimately, the world.”

New drone flyover gives up-close look at Apple’s rapidly progressing Campus 2

This latest drone flyover of Apple’s under construction Campus 2 project is perhaps our best look yet at the site that will soon become Apple’s main headquarters and home to around 13,000 of its employees. The footage comes courtesy of Duncan Sinfield (via MR).

Since last checking in, you can see that Apple has now completed erecting most of the four stories that make up the main, circular structure. And if you’ve been keeping track (we have in our continually updated construction progress timeline), you’ll also notice that much of the surrounding campus taking shape with the underground auditorium, parking structure, R&D facilities and more all starting to look real.

If all goes to plan and Apple sticks to its general construction schedule posted on the City of Cupertino’s website (below), it will wrap up construction by the end of 2016 and begin moving its employees onto the campus from its current HQ down the road and elsewhere.

If you want to check out how the project has progressed so far, you can head over to our construction progress timeline that includes drone videos, official aerial shots from Apple and City of Cupertino, and news surrounding the project since before construction began.

Latest 4K drone footage of Campus 2 shows huge glass panels on site as spaceship continues to grow

With the construction of Apple’s new Spaceship campus now showing rapid progress, new 4K drone footage (below) shows huge glass panels in the staging area close to the metal sections.

The circular Campus 2 building is really taking shape now above ground level, even when compared to footage from just three weeks ago, and we get a sense of the scale of the excavation from the sizeable pyramid of excavated dirt just outside the ring …

Apple Campus 2 construction progress gets a close up in latest 4K drone flyover

Today we get one of the best looks yet at Apple’s under construction “Campus 2” in Cupertino with a drone flyover video courtesy of Emory Peterson and aerial photography company Above Reno.

The video, shot in 4K over Labor Day weekend earlier this month, gets us up close with Apple’s rapidly progressing Campus 2 project scheduled for completion in late 2016. Above Reno notes the video was “filmed at or below 400 feet above ground level with clearance from the local FAA office.”

Apple gives new look at Campus 2 construction progress in updated aerial photo

In an updated aerial photo published today, Apple gives us our latest look at construction progress on its new ‘Campus 2’ building in Cupertino.

In the photo, we get a closer look at new developments on the main building, as well as the surrounding campus including a planned 1,000 seat auditorium, 300,000 square foot R&D facilities, a parking structure and other buildings separate from the main circular structure. The photos were published to the City of Cupertino’s webpage tracking progress and road closures on the project for the public.

Apple hasn’t updated its planned general project schedule on the City of Cupertino’s website and still plans to complete building construction on Campus 2 by the end of 2016 when it can begin to move in approximately 13,000 of its employees.

We’ve been keeping track of construction progress on Campus 2 with the latest photos, news, and drone flyovers in our timeline here.

Apple Campus 2 photos show ground shots of Campus 2 exterior panels

Photos shot by a 9to5Mac reader show the most recent look at Apple’s new Campus 2 headquarters from the ground level. While we’ve seen a plethora of drone and ariel videos and pictures, images from the ground have been a bit more scarce. Back in February, Apple provided us with a “sneak peek” at Campus 2, but obviously a lot has changed since then…

Apple reverses policy, will now hire felons to work on Campus 2 construction

Site default logo image

Earlier this week it was reported that Apple had put a policy in place that would have prevented the company from hiring people who been convicted of felonies within the past seven years to aid in the construction of its new headquarters.

According to the original report, fewer than five people had actually been denied jobs because of their criminal backgrounds. Even so, union leaders sent letters to CEO Tim Cook at the beginning of the year asking for the policy to be lifted, but to no avail.

After drawing fire from unions and workers, Apple today reversed that decision and announced that it will hire those workers who were recently convicted of felonies.

Beautiful aerial photography shows Apple’s latest Campus 2 construction progress

These might be the best photos yet of Apple’s currently under construction Campus 2 site in Cupertino.

The new photos were published by The California Sunday Magazine and shot by Michael Light, a San Franciso-based photographer and pilot that managed to get some gorgeous photos of the site from his aircraft and outdo the drone shots we’ve see up until now.

We’ve previously shared a number of aerial shots straight from Apple and drone operators flying over the site regularly. All of the latest images, news updates, and drone flyovers for Campus 2 can be found in our ongoing timeline tracking progress at the site.

The most recent updates came last month when Apple shared official aerial shots of Campus 2 and city officials approved a recycled water project that is being partly funded and led by Apple and its new campus.

Apple shares updated aerial shot of Campus 2 construction progress

Apple today shared an updated aerial shot of its under construction Campus 2 project since last checking in earlier this month. As always, the company posted the image above to the City of Cupertino’s webpage tracking updates on the project.

The new image shares a different perspective of the site compared to photos Apple shared earlier this month and views from the latest 4K drone flyover.

Earlier this month CEO Tim Cook spoke to Fast Company about the new campus:

It’s critical that Apple do everything it can to stay informal. And one of the ways that you stay informal is to be together. One of the ways that you ensure collaboration is to make sure people run into each other—not just at the meetings that are scheduled on your calendar, but all the serendipitous stuff that happens every day in the cafeteria and walking around.

Apple expects to begin moving in around 12,000 of its employees into the new Campus by 2017 if it completes the project on schedule.

We’ve been tracking all of the official and unofficial updates we’ve received on the project in our Apple Campus 2 project timeline.

FastCo interview: Tim Cook talks Apple philosophy/legacy, Apple watch skepticism, new Campus & more

Site default logo image

Fast Company has an extensive interview with Apple CEO Tim Cook, focusing on what has changed and what has stayed the same since he took over from Steve Jobs. The interview comes a day after FastCo published a sizeable excerpt from the book Becoming Steve Jobs, in which Cook criticized the portrayal of Jobs in Isaacson’s biography.

Cook said that while much has changed, the culture–the fundamental goal of the company–remained the same.

Steve felt that if Apple could do that—make great products and great tools for people—they in turn would do great things. He felt strongly that this would be his contribution to the world at large. We still very much believe that. That’s still the core of this company.

The company has never tried to be first to market, he said, but rather to “have the patience to get it right” …
