Marc Newson believes the Apple Watch will be an iPhone-level game-changer within 5 years

Marc Newson, a close friend to Jony Ive and famed designer himself, spoke recently to the Australian Financial Review about the reaction to the Apple Watch so far.

“As far as I’m aware, it’s been enormously successful however you gauge it. The point is, it’s the beginning of something. I think people, consumers or analysts, whoever, are so impatient. Everyone wants immediate, instant recognition, instant understanding,” he said.

Apple hasn’t disclosed Apple Watch sales to date, Tim Cook citing competitive reasons, but analysts ball parked numbers around 3.95 million last quarter. Newson suggests Apple Watch will reach iPhone levels within five years. (Apple sold 48 million iPhones last quarter.)

“Look at the iPhone: it was a game-changing thing. And I believe that this product – for many, many reasons people are not aware of because they haven’t thought ahead or they just don’t know – will become a similarly game-changing thing. In five years’ time I have absolutely no doubt this will be right up there.”

Newson, who officially joined Apple over a year ago, has previously spoken about the Apple Watch and its role in the fashion space as well. When asked about his own experience with Apple Watch, Newson described checking alerts on it rather than his iPhone as liberating and cited the fitness aspect as especially positive.

“I exercise, probably not enough, but I can say without a shadow of a doubt that I am more conscious of my physical wellbeing because of this than I was six months ago.”

You can find a lengthier profile of Newson with much of the same piece included at the Australian Financial Review.

Apple’s Marc Newson responds to Apple Watch criticism, Apple Car reports, & talks fashion

Marc Newson, famous designer and close friend of Apple design guru Jony Ive, just gave his first solo interview since joining Apple last year. In the interview with the London Evening Standard, Newson talks Apple Watch, thought to be one of the first products he had involvement with since joining the company, as well as the future of the company from fashion to cars.

When asked about Apple Watch, and specifically the criticism from the fashion industry, Newson responded:

Apple Watch Edition suddenly looks cheap as Marc Newson chair sells for $3.7M

If you wanted to get your hands on something (partly) designed by Marc Newson, the Apple Watch is probably the cheapest option out there. Even the $17,000 top-of-the-range Edition model might look a little more reasonable after learning that a Newson-designed lounge chair just sold at a London auction for $3.7M.

Still, when you’re laying out a few million on a chair, you can at least be confident it’s the most comfortable chair in the world, right? Apparently not: Newson told the BBC that it was “not really meant to be comfortable.”

Newson, a close friend of Jony Ive, joined Apple last year to work on a number of projects, among them a special edition Red Mac Pro (which sold for a mere $977,000) and, of course, the Apple Watch. Newson and Ive spoke at the Condé Nast luxury conference last week, discussing the design and materials of the watch.

Apple design head Jony Ive has given the opening interview at the first Condé Nast International Luxury Conference, in which he justified the concept of a mass-produced Apple Watch as worthy of the label ‘craftsmanship.’

It’s not so much about things being touched personally – there are many ways to craft something. It’s easy to assume that just because you make something in small volumes, not using many tools, that there is integrity and care – that is a false assumption.

Newson echoed this comment, reports Vogue, saying that machines are simply tools, much like a craftsman making a hand-made product might use a drill …  expand full story
