Delays hit iPad accessories, more shortages to come?

Over the past few days, Apple has altered some of the shipping times on their branded iPad accessories. First we noticed the iPad case making a slight shift from April 3rd to Mid-April. Today we notice Apple has delayed the iPad Keyboard Dock. The product was originally set to ship to customers in late-April but now the Apple store has placed the shipping time for sometime in May.

That doesn't bode well for those outside the US that wanted to get their hands on this with their iPad order nor anyone in the US who hasn't pre-ordered the product yet. We can speculate about why it is delayed, but it is most likely just brisk sales rather than a product issue they are trying to fix.

Perhaps even worse then those accessory delays is the iPad Camera Kit's current situation. The kit which allows you to connect an SD card or digital cameras to your iPad is not even on Apple's online store.  The iPad's lack of  a standard USB port or an SD card slot built-in is a potential negative for prospective buyers, and this kit was supposed to resolve the issue.

With Apple's intense secrecy and rigid quality controls, delivering items on time and on spec has been an issue lately.  This is clear through the faulty iMac saga, the iPad's slight delay, and now these in-house accessories.

I simply examined my personal order position, and my personal ipad case still says delivery April third. It is quite possible that they just didn't revise the my order web page, however it could also be the supply shortage concern, plus they are predicting the next shipment to arrive within mid-April. I'm worried about the camera kit although. However so long as I have it prior to 06 7th (after i leave on summer holiday), I'm going to be fine. andy from free runescape membership

I just checked my order status, and my iPad case still says shipping April 3rd.  It's quite possible that they just didn't update the my order page, but it could also be a supply shortage issue, and they are projecting the next shipment to arrive in mid-April. I am worried about the camera kit though.  But as long as I have it before June 7th (when I leave on summer vacation), I'll be fine.

They finally noticed that one of the keys was completely blank and are now busy making stickers to include with the dock so that the key has a use.

D00d, have you no sense of humor? It's pretty clear to most of us around here that this site is about 62.3% tongue in cheek. (hint: my tongue is in my cheek as I write this).It is very funny that the ipad kb's top row buttons keep changing. Steve must have fired at least 15 dudes because of that upper row.

Mine shows a ship date of April !5, with it arriving on the 20th.  Maybe people didn't order first thing in the morning are having to wait for the second batch.  Just sayin'

My shipping time has not changed. My keyboard is expected to ship on April 15 and my case on April 3. Maybe they are running out if you ordered late. I ordered within ten minutes of the online store opening last Friday.

At least you don't have to wait until "late April" to get the device like we do in Canada (although simultaneous launch in US AND Canada was first announced). Good thing is (if all goes well) the 3G version will also be available.... oh wait! there is a catch: we still have no clue about the plans some potential yet undetermined provider will offer over here... Last consolation, I will have time to read full reviews before buying mine.

Lame. Having these accessories available at launch, is just as important as having them at all. Most of the sales for these pieces of overpriced junk would take place when preorder customers come through the stores at launch. Not only is it a missed opportunity, but it's a poor way to support a product on launch. "what accessories do u have?" "None," "Oh, how nice."

if they were shipping the product as it comes from the factory you would expect different promise dates. This is the way ERP systems is supposed to work. They could have built more for the launch, but obviously did not.

I really do not like this accessory anyway. One use for iPad is to leave the laptop at home. As a hedge, such users would want to take a keyboard like this one with them for answering emails in the hotel room. The problem is, unless I am missing something, that the white support looks like it is cast as a single piece and is not collapsable, making it clunky to pack. Is it just my imagination, or are Apple accessories poor quality as a rule?
Anyway, nice to hear they sold enough to run through the first shipment...

Chinese New Year took 2+ weeks out of an already tight schedule. 2 trips to China and having 1200 dedicated works helping us Kick Ass is what it took!

Does nobody of your actually work in the electronics business?Developing consumer electronics I see all over the industry nothing but increasing supply shortages. Lead-times of half a year for standard components like caps can happen. Because of world wide recession manufacturers in Asia were winding down factories, fired thousands of workers and then were overwhelmed when orders came in again. Now that everybody starts ordering again they have to start the factories and bring the people in again. Why does anybody expect Apple might not be affected by this? Just one critical component in the device and lead-times start slipping tremendously... Just give the industry half a year and Apple will again bring new products next day after announcement -currently it's just not possible to get all components in time.

Before we went and picked up all those iPad-specific accessories, we thought we would look around and see what could double as a stand, case, etc...

The surprising thing was our 4-year old Stowaway Folding keyboard for our Blackberry (which we never used) worked great!

My favorite accessory is the Pedestal Base for the iPad. It looks just like the acrylic bases that Apple uses at their stores. Found it at newpcgadgets
