Here’s how the jet black iPhone’s ‘fine micro-abrasions’ look after almost a year

It’s almost time for the iPhone 8 (and/or iPhone Edition) which means it’s been nearly one year since the jet black iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus shipped. When Apple introduced the glossy black finish, it warned customers that jet black is prone to ‘fine micro-abrasions’ and recommended using a case. I prefer using my iPhone caseless (and jet black is satisfyingly grippy) so I put Apple’s challenge to the test at the risk of losing any resale value.

Comment: The OnePlus 5 looks like a blatant copy of the iPhone 7 Plus

Over on the Android side of the world, leaked renders of the upcoming OnePlus 5 flagship have hit the web today. While they don’t unveil anything too crazy about the handset itself, we do get our first look at its design. Instead of keeping with its previous design language, the OnePlus 5 will most likely ship looking almost identical to the iPhone 7 Plus…

Largely unchanged design of iPhone 7 hurt sales, suggests CIRP data

Site default logo image

New data from CIRP suggests that iPhone 7 sales suffered as a result of having a very similar design to the older iPhone 6 and 6s. The firm says that it led more buyers to opt for an older model in the last quarter.

Despite upgraded features like each new flagship iPhone release, the legacy models accounted for almost a third of iPhones sold in the quarter, the highest percentage since Apple started releasing two new phones each fall in 2014.

There was, however, some good news that helped protect the Average Selling Price (ASP) …

Site default logo image

[UPDATE: Brazilian Carnival-themed ad included below the fold.]

Apple has published new iPhone 7 Plus video ads that highlight Portrait Mode with the flagship model’s Camera app.

The first video is called Soul Mate and explains how Portrait Mode makes the subject stand out from the background when Blur Effect is applied. While Portrait Mode was first tuned to work best with people’s faces, this video demonstrates the feature on a dog sitting still (which may be the hardest part).

Review: Taking your iPhone 7/7 Plus photography further with Aukey’s Wide-Angle Ora Lens

Site default logo image

Without a doubt, my favorite feature on any iPhone has always been the camera. It serves as more than good enough as a daily shooter, and new apps and accessories are being released everyday that help take that experience further. The first iPhone accessories I really got into, back when I had my iPhone 4, were wide-angle lenses and I still love them to this day. Recently I’ve been on the lookout for a lens for the iPhone 7 Plus to recommend for those just starting out with iPhone camera enhancements. I think I found the right product with the Aukey 120° wide-angle Ora Lens. Let’s take a look at what the lens can do for you and your iPhone photography…

iPhone 7 Plus weekend camera action: Portrait mode outdoors and underwater 4K

Site default logo image

I traveled to Alabama over the weekend to attend my younger sister’s wedding and visit family which gave me a great opportunity to put some of the iPhone 7 Plus camera features to good use. I usually bring my three year old Nikon 1 J1 along during occasions like these for optical zoom, but the auto-focus and video quality just doesn’t compare to the iPhone these days.

The new Portrait mode was very impressive in outdoor lighting and 2x optical zoom was fun to try. We also took a walk through a bamboo park where I tried underwater video capture for the first time. Check out some of the shots and video below:

How to get bokeh in photos taken with older iPhones (in very limited circumstances)

Not the most artistic of photos, but illustrates my point …

I did cringe slightly as I wrote that headline, as it would be more correctly stated as ‘How to get shallow depth of field’ – bokeh being the particular appearance of the out-of-focus areas. But, thanks to Apple, the world is using one term to refer to the other, so I gave in where the headline was concerned.

Only the iPhone 7 Plus, with its dual-camera system, has the ability to generate artificial shallow depth of field, an effect activated in yesterday’s beta. But all iPhones are capable of generating optical shallow depth of field in very limited circumstances, and it’s actually really easy to do so …

KGI: Dual-lens camera to remain exclusive to high-end new iPhone models in 2017, small upgrades expected

Site default logo image

KGI Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, citing investor reaction to Apple’s new dual camera feature, is predicting that the module will remain exclusive to high-end iPhone models for next year’s anniversary release. Further, he expects high end iPhone Plus models to represent 30-40% of the total iPhone sales.

The investor note, which makes reference to a general belief that all the new iPhone models will come with a dual-camera module in 2017 as a trickle-down effect, places doubt on the possibility of the dual camera being adopted in non-Plus iPhones.
