Apple Park

Apple Park is Apple's new, 175-acre corporate campus. Its 2.8 million-square-foot main building, or "spaceship," is considered to be one of the most energy-efficient buildings on earth. The campus and nearby visitor center opened in 2017, and will house over 12,000 employees.

First announced by Steve Jobs in 2006, Apple kicked off construction on its new 175-acre “Campus 2” in late 2013 and was expected to start moving in more than 12,000 of its employees in April 2017. The campus, located approximately one mile east of its current headquarters in Cupertino, California is also often referred to as the Apple “Spaceship” due to the appearance of the site’s main circular building.

CEO Tim Cook explained why Apple Park’s theater was named after the late Steve Jobs:

To honor his memory and his enduring influence on Apple and the world, the theater at Apple Park will be named the Steve Jobs Theater. Opening later this year, the entrance to the 1,000-seat auditorium is a 20-foot-tall glass cylinder, 165 feet in diameter, supporting a metallic carbon-fiber roof. The Steve Jobs Theater is situated atop a hill — one of the highest points within Apple Park — overlooking meadows and the main building.

Apple Park also houses a visitor center with an exclusive corporate store and mini Caffè Macs. The visitor center opened to public in November 2017.

Finishing touches and trees being added to Apple’s Campus 2 as heavier work largely completed [Video]

Site default logo image

We noted earlier this month that Apple’s Campus 2 was starting to look less like a construction site, and the latest 4K drone footage from Matthew Roberts shows trees being planted and the finishing touches being added in some places as much of the heavier work has been completed.

Work continues on the canopies designed to shield the windows from the sun, with cosmetic work being done to those already in place as others are still being added. Some of the last remaining cranes on site are also still at work on the rooftop solar installation, which is now around 70% complete …

The latest drone flyover of Apple’s under construction Campus 2 headquarters in Cupertino arrives today showing recent progress at the site expected to officially open its doors early this year. The footage comes courtesy of drone pilot and YouTuber Matthew Roberts.

In the video, we can see that Apple has done a lot of cleaning up in recent weeks as it continues with landscaping and earthwork on the surrounding site. Apple expects to wrap up the landscaping work sometime in Q2 this year, according to its latest general project schedule, but it could begin moving in as early as later this month.

Apple shows enormity of rapidly progressing Campus 2 w/ interior shots ahead of move-in

Site default logo image

Apple this week shared photos of its under construction Campus 2 with employees, including some of the first interior shots of the building that is now nearing completion. The photos don’t appear to be meant for public consumption, but were published today by French blog macgeneration.

As part of the memo to employees, Apple reportedly said that around 5,200 people are currently working the site.  The photos, which are some of the first of the building’s interior, shows the enormity of the structure from a ground-level perspective.

One shot shows work on a “Caffè Macs” location, Apple’s company cafeteria, that is housed in the main spaceship-shaped building:

Latest Apple Campus 2 drone videos show outer facade almost complete, new landscaping & more

Two new drone videos are up, showing the latest progress on the Apple Campus 2 construction. The outer facade of the main building is now almost complete, along with around half the solar panels on the roof, with far fewer cranes now operating. The team has also been busy on the landscaping front, with lots of new trees throughout the site.

The maintenance facility is growing, construction of a new security building is underway on the Tantau Avenue side of the campus and the main parking garages look pretty much complete – with 300 charging stations for all those Teslas Apple employees favor

Popular Science takes us on a tour of Apple’s Spaceship Campus construction [Video]

We’re following construction progress of Apple’s Campus 2 via a series of drone videos and renders, but Popular Science got invited in for a closer look at some of the unique features of the building.

The piece starts out with some stats, among them that there are around 3,000 sheets of glass, the heaviest of which weighs 7000 pounds. And it’s the glass that’s been one of the great challenges of the project …

Apple has just become an energy company, looks to sell excess electricity into the grid and maybe more

Site default logo image

Update: John Weaver did a deeper dive on this over at Electrek

Apple has quietly created an energy subsidiary, ‘Apple Energy’ LLC, registered in Delaware but run from its Cupertino headquarters. The company was seemingly formed to allow it to sell excess electricity generated by its solar farms in Cupertino and Nevada, with plans to sell electricity across the whole of the US.

[Apple Energy LLC] is a Delaware limited liability company and is a 100% wholly owned subsidiary of Apple Inc. [Contact is] Apple Energy LLC, One Infinite Loop, Cupertino, CA 95014

Given Apple’s expertise and huge commitment to using renewable energy to power its operations, it is no surprise that it wants to ensure that its solar farms generate sufficient power to meet its needs. Because the sun only shines during the day obviously, Apple needs to shift its generation and its usage. Data centers need to go 24/7. Apple Stores are open in the evening. Apple has alternatives for this at its campus (see Fuel Cell generation below) but if it wants to operate 100% renewable, it has to “trade” overcapacity during the middle of the day for “net-metered” energy during the evening or cloudy days.

Apple’s Cupertino Campus 2 Photovoltaics are rated at 14 megawatts alone.

But a set of Federal Energy Regulatory Commission filings suggests that Apple could have bigger ambitions in the power field …

Apple has made quite a lot of progress on its under construction “Campus 2” set to become the company’s new headquarters when complete around the end of the year. Since last checking in a month ago, a video update published today by Matthew Roberts for June shows continued progress on the roof of the main circular spaceship building, including a look at the heating and cooling systems installed throughout, and what looks to be some new outdoor areas surrounding the entrance of the underground theatre. Head below for a look at progress made in recent weeks.

Cupertino mayor claims he was surrounded/escorted out by Apple security personnel in row over city taxes

[UPDATE: Cupertino mayor Barry Chang is refuting the claims made by The Guardian, saying that he never said the words quoted in the article: “I was shocked and dismayed to see a recent article quoting me with words I never used and describing situations that never happened,” he said in a statement on the Cupertino city website.]

Cupertino mayor Barry Chang has accused Apple of ‘abusing’ its home city by failing to contribute to much-needed public projects, and claims that he was ‘surrounded’ by security and escorted off the premises when he tried to discuss traffic congestion.

Apple is not willing to pay a dime. They’re making profit, and they should share the responsibility for our city, but they won’t. They abuse us.

However, the Guardian notes that Apple paid $9.2M in city taxes in 2012/13 …
