August halts View wire-free video doorbell sales, early customers eligible for full refund

From AirPower to the Samsung Galaxy Fold, it’s been a tough year for hardware and it’s only April. Now smart home company August is the latest firm to face an unexpected hardware challenge. Sales of the $230 wire-free August View video doorbell are being halted and some customers are receiving refunds less than three weeks since the smart doorbell started shipping.

August adds free 24 hour cloud video storage to its smart home video doorbells

Perhaps fearing competition from Amazon’s acquisition of Ring last month, August today announced they are adding free cloud storage for customers of August Doorbell Cam and August Doorbell Cam Pro.

With the new ‘Basic August Video Recording’ subscription, the doorbells will save the last 24 hours of video to August’s servers, with access to view it through the August app. Premium paid plans offer larger storage quotas.

Review: August Smart Lock Pro works with HomeKit and Z-Wave Plus, Doorbell Cam Pro lights up the night

August Doorbell Cam and others supporting Amazon Echo Show as HomeKit features still promised

When the Echo Show launches next Wednesday, Amazon’s smart speaker with a display will work with a number of smart home cameras including the August Doorbell Cam from day one. For comparison, Apple’s HomeKit smart home feature supports video cameras and doorbells but only one camera has hit the market with support so far.

Being able to automate locking and unlocking your front door is one of the easiest ways to transform your house into a smart home and enter the age of the Jetsons. August launching upgraded Smart Lock that works with Siri through HomeKit

Apple’s HomeKit platform for connected accessories around the house has been steadily expanding over the last few months, and today August is adding to it with a new version of its Smart Lock. Revealed today, the new HomeKit-enabled August Smart Lock is an upgraded version of the Bluetooth-connected door lock that first launched last year. HomeKit compatibility means you can use the Siri virtual assistant on iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch to lock or unlock August Smart Lock using voice commands. Working with Apple’s smart home platform also means Smart Lock can be a part of commands like “Goodnight” that turn off connected lights, lock the front door, and lower the temperature.
