Sunrise Calendar announces new Mac client with offline mode, third-party app integration

Just a few weeks after rolling out a major update its iOS apps, Sunrise Calendar today announced the first version of Sunrise for Mac. Sunrise for Mac includes a variety of features and capabilities, many of which are similar to what you’d find in the company’s iOS apps. On OS X, the app takes almost all of its design cues from the iOS client with color-coded events, although the team notes that the Mac client was built “specifically for the desktop.”

Apple seeds new OS X 10.9.4, OS X Server, and Safari betas to developers

Site default logo image

Apple has just released several new beta seeds to developers today, including a build of OS X 10.9.4 (build number 13E16), a new version of Safari 6.1.5, and OS X Server 3.2 (build 13S5515).

The first beta build of OS X 10.9.4 was released at the end of last month, but so far there don’t seem to be any major new changes in the update. This is the first seed of Safari 6.1.5 that has been published, and it likely contains just a few bug fixes and improvements. This is also the first seed of OS X Server 3.2, which requires Mavericks 10.9.4 to install.

Registered Mac developers can get all of this software from the Mac Developer Center. None of these updates appear to be available to AppleSeed members yet. The Mavericks seed notes are below:

iCloud Drive enables non-Mac App Store apps to use iCloud document storage

Site default logo image

Prior to OS X Yosemite and Apple’s new iCloud Drive announced on Monday, Mac developers were explicitly required to succumb to the restraints of the Mac App Store to allow their customers to use iCloud file storage within their apps.

Now with the introduction of iCloud Drive, which gives users much clearer access to content stored in iCloud, developers can distribute their apps outside of the Mac App Store and trust that their users can opt to use iCloud for document storage as if they were sold in the Mac App Store…

RSS client Reeder 2 for Mac now available on the Mac App Store

After a brief public beta period, the popular RSS client Reeder is out with the first update to its Mac software since Google Reader broke support Reeder last year.

The new version supports a number of RSS services that have proven popular since Google Reader ended (like Feedbin, Feedly, and Feed Wrangler), and it now serves as a standalone RSS client without syncing so you won’t have to depend on an RSS service to use the app in the future.

Pixelmator 3.2 revamps the Repair Tool, adds locked layers, 16-bit support for all Macs and more

Site default logo image

The Pixelmator team is relentless, releasing significant updates to the application every few months. Version 3.2 (codenamed ‘Sandstone’) is no exception and can be downloaded from the Mac App Store now. Codenamed Sandstone, this iteration adds a majorly-revamped Repair Tool, 16-bit channel editing for all Macs (not just the Mac Pro) alongside a whole bucket of other improvements.

The Repair Tool now uses color-correction to match repaired areas seamlessly. It also has clever smarts that mean you don’t have to precisely select an object anymore, the software will remove the whole object automatically. Pixelmator will also try its best to infer the structure of the background area, for a more natural final edit.

The Repair Tool now has three different options, Quick, Standard and Advanced. Quick is meant for small blemishes, whereas Standard and Advanced tackle the removal of larger objects from a scene. It’s not exactly clear under what circumstances you are supposed to change mode, so I chose ‘Advanced’ every time in my testing and the results were fantastic. It’s sort of like magic. You can see an example of what this is capable of after the break …

Apple updates standalone FaceTime app for Snow Leopard users with connection bug fix

Remember the good ol’ days when FaceTime wasn’t included with each Mac? Back then, you had to download a bit of software from the Mac App Store in order to make video calls to iPhone owners (though iChat could still do Mac-to-Mac calls). Even today, that standalone app is still available on the Mac App Store for $.99—and for some reason it’s still the #5 paid app on the entire store.

Given its apparent popularity three years after its launch, it makes at least a little sense that Apple updated the app today to fix a bug that could prevent users from connecting to FaceTime calls. Of course, if you’re on anything newer than Snow Leopard, you don’t need this update, but anyone still running OS X 10.6 who already purchased the app can get the free update to resolve the problem.

For Snow Leopard users who haven’t already made the purchase, the app is $.99 on the Mac App Store.

Realmac says its still fine tuning the Reminders experience in Clear and expects to release the update early next month. This marks the first time we’ve seen a shot of how the Reminders function will look in Clear (seen above) as well as a blurred teaser for the Mac version as well (notice the calendar date picker).

1Password 4 for Mac now allows editing in the browser extension, better sub-domain matching and more

Site default logo image

[vimeo 88901304 w=800 h=500]

The popular password manager 1Password has been updated with one of the most-requested features: the ability to edit entries within the browser extension, 1Password mini, rather than having to use the main app.

It also promises much better matching of logins to subdomains, so that your stored logins should work more of the time. Previously the app would often fail to recognise subdomains as being part of the same site, so automatic login would not be available when you jumped straight to a particular section of a site, forcing you to login manually then create a new entry.

AgileBits describes version 4.2.1 as “a huge update with over 30 new features,” which are detailed below the fold …

Apple seeds first OS X Mavericks 10.9.3 beta to developers

Just under two weeks after releasing OS X Mavericks 10.9.2, Apple has seeded the first beta of OS X Mavericks version 10.9.3 to developers. The build number is 13D12. Like its predecessor, it is likely that 10.9.3 focuses on additional bug fixes. Apple asks developers to focus on Graphics Drivers and Audio during testing. We’ll update this post if new features are discovered.

Update: 10.9.3 builds in support for running 4K monitors at Retina resolution. All of the details here

Thanks, D!

Apple releases iTunes 11.1.5 w/ compatibility improvements & crash fix

Apple has released today a minor update to iTunes on OS X with a fix for a nasty bug that could cause iTunes to crash. The update also includes compatibility improvements with iBooks, Apple says.

The software update follows yesterday’s release of the highly critical OS X 10.9.2 release which filled an existing SSL bug that left users vulnerable to malicious attackers. Apple also introduced FaceTime Audio calling and contact blocking which debuted on iOS 7 last fall.

The update should be rolling out to OS X users through the Mac App Store.

  • Autofill fixes for Safari
  • Audio fixes

The release notes do not make mention of the SSL security bug that was squashed on iOS late last week, but a fix is present in this new OS X update. The update is available on the Mac App Store in the Software Update tab.

Evernote adds Descriptive Search feature to Mac app

Evernote announced today that it’s adding a Descriptive Search feature for english users of its Mac app. Evernote says the new feature allows users to search using “everyday language to find notes the way he/she remembers them.” That means you’ll be able to use a number of descriptive words that act as filters to search for notes. Among the descriptive words, or filters, that will be recognized by the new feature are dates, apps, places, documents, images, audio, devices, web sources, type of content, notebooks, and tags. Evernote gives the example of searching for vegetarian recipes using phrases such as “recipes tagged as vegetarian” or “vegetarian recipes.”

Descriptive Search makes suggestions based on actual contents of your Evernote account, such as notebooks, contents of your notes, tags, and devices. Other examples of searches and results include:

Search –> Result
‘Notebook project with pdfs’ –> all the notes in the project notebook with PDFs attached
‘Web clips created last month’ or ‘web clips last month’ –> every web page clipped this month
‘Notes from japan’ or ‘in japan’ –> all the notes created while in Japan
‘Notes from phone with audio’ or ‘phone with audio’ –> all the notes created on a phone that have an attached audio file or recording

No word on when the update will be available to mobile users but the new Descriptive Search feature will be available initially in English to all Evernote accounts through the Mac App. The update should be rolling out to the Evernote for Mac app shortly.

A full list of filters for the new descriptive search feature is below:

Apple buying Internet infrastructure to boost performance, possibly prepare for television

Site default logo image

One of Apple’s existing data centers

The WSJ reports that Apple has been quietly making major new investments in Internet infrastructure in a move which may simply be designed to boost the performance of its existing online services, but which could also be in readiness for its upcoming television product.

Bill Norton, chief strategy officer for International Internet Exchange, which helps companies line up Internet traffic agreements, estimates that Apple has in a short time bought enough bandwidth from Web carriers to move hundreds of gigabits of data each second.

“That’s the starting point for a very, very big network,” Mr. Norton said …

Apple seeds new OS X Mavericks 10.9.2, Safari 6.1.2 betas to developers

A week following the previous beta, Apple has seeded a new version of OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 to developers. The update is available via Software Update in the Mac App Store and Apple’s online developer portal. It is labeled as build 13C44, and that’s a small increase over last week’s 13C39 build. Last week’s build brought blocking for iMessage and FaceTime, while the original 10.9.2 beta introduced FaceTime Audio in the Mac’s FaceTime and Messages apps.

Pixelmator 3.1 brings 16-bit image support for Mac Pro, integrated photo printing and more

Pixelmator have released the latest version of their app today, version 3.1. As usual, it is available exclusively in the Mac App Store for $29.99. Codenamed Marble, this update brings several enhancements to the image editor including specific Mac Pro optimizations such as 16-bit image support.

Primarily, Pixelmator 3.1 optimises for the new Mac Pro’s hardware. Apple has used Pixelmator before to tout the Mac Pro’s performance benefits, and the developers are clearly keen to push this further still.

The “exclusive” support for the new Mac Pro enables the simultaneous use of both GPU’s  for even faster composition and rendering. In fact, the app can compute the autosave data whilst the image is being rendered. This translates to significant speed improvements across the app.
