iPhone heading to EVDO/Verizon for 2009?

We've fielded a couple of tips (some more sketchy than others) about EVDO iPhones floating around Cupertino in the past, but today's tipster seems a little bit more sure of himself.  Besides having some Verizon insider credentials, he seems to know way too much about Verizon-Apple politics.  According to him, Apple will be announcing iPhones for Verizon Wireless in 2009, perhaps as early Macworld 2009.  Negotiations between Apple and Verizon are ongoing but they expect to hammer out agreements by the end of the year.

This isn't a huge surprise for a number of reasons:

  1. Apple has been scouting out EVDO and CDMA Engineers for months in their online iPhone job postings (here, here, here and here).  Yes, some of these skills overlap with UTMS and CDMA can also refer to the broad swath of 3G Technologies...but come on...don't put "EVDO" on the job description if it ain't true.. (BTW, WiMax is also littered throughout Apple's Job postings...interesting/digress)
  2. No matter how big AT&T is and how much range they cover, leaving out Verizon and to a lesser extent Sprint, will be eliminating a broad swath of the US wireless market.  If Apple is serious about competing with Blackberry, Symbian and Android, they will have to broaden their carrier footprint.  One carrier does not a platform make.  Apple will need a way to grow its market after AT&T is saturated.
  3. LTE technology won't be mature until well into 2010.  Apple can't afford to wait that long to broaden its carrier footprint
  4. Who is happy with Rogers in Canada (*crickets*)?  EVDO opens up to new carriers there as well.
  5. Verizon wireless is a partnership between Verizon communications and Vodafone.  Vodafone, you'll recall, has contracts with Apple for iPhones in around 15 markets around the world.  Apple has a working relationship with Vodafone (and Tmobile obviously).
  6. Apple has just started going "Open" in a few markets, including Hong Kong. This will likely increase the number of unlocked 3G iPhones on the world market (South Africa is also open).  While this won't benefit Verizon directly, it certainly shows that Apple is considering being more "carrier agnostic."
  7. Tim Cook, famously said that Apple wasn't married to the one carrier/country model.  As Apple expands, it is going more and more open.
  8. Verizon's iPhone Cheat sheet was weak and their arguments about Stevo getting old were silly.  They'd rather play ball with Apple than try to defend itself against it.
  9. Apple originally wanted to go with Verizon for the iPhone.  Some of the original disagreements included "not carrying the iPhone at Best Buy and hardware reliability" - see quote below.  AT&T was a second choice.  When Verizon balked, Apple went to AT&T...Think Verizon is happy about that decision (no) or willing to reconsider Apple's overtures (yes)?

According to Verizon, Apple CEO Steve Jobs insisted that he have hard control over iPhone distribution.

The problem? While Apple and Verizon stores would have it, Wal-Mart, Best Buy and other Verizon distributors could have been left out. "That would have put our own distribution partners at a disadvantage" to Apple and Verizon stores, Gerace said.

Customer care was another hitch: If an iPhone went haywire, Apple wanted sole discretion over whether to replace or repair the phone. "They would have been stepping in between us and our customers to the point where we would have almost had to take a back seat … on hardware and service support," Gerace says.

The number one reason people think AT&T is the only US carrier that Apple will visit is because a couple of falsely reported rumors by USA Today that "revealed" Apple has signed exclusivity deals with AT&T.  Depending on whether you trust the original article which said it would be five years or the latest article which says two years, or any of the other speculation out there (CNN says 2009), nothing public has ever been uncovered that has specified the length of AT&T-Apple exclusivity deals.  At the original iPhone announcement at Macworld 2007, Cingular's CEO Stan Sigmund indicated that Apple and Cingular had signed a multi(2?)-year deal.  A Macworld 2009 launch would put the AT&T-Apple exclusivity at 18 months from mid 2007 launch, WWDC 2009 would be 2 years from launch.  Add 6 months for time since the announcement.

There is no reason why Apple wouldn't also be chatting with Sprint and T-mobile about possible deals as well.  We welcome some carrier competition in the US iPhone field.

The sooner the better.

Please bring the iphone to verizon!!! I just got the lg dare and its good, but it comes no where near the iphone. i carry my phone and itouch around with me all the time, and it would be so much easier if i just had one device to do everything on.

How credible is this source?

I do the same thing I have a sprint phone for 5 years (dont ask why) and I carry my ipod touch with me everywhere I go. It would be great if my carrier had it as well

Dude -- Iphone doesn't support bluetooth stereo -- So if you bluetooth your music to your headset you might wanna keep the LG Dare vs the Iphone. Plus it has Vcast song ID that will ID the songs for you that you don't know. Another cool benifit..

Really? Bluetooth stereo? I

Really? Bluetooth stereo? I think that's something that we can all get past as the synching capabillites (iCal, Address Book) are all so much more incredible not having to use third party software if synching to a mac.

And, the iPhone has a song ID now. Just a couple things.

Verizon: high prices,

Verizon: high prices, mediocre quality. That's what I find.

If Verizon comes out with an iPhone - well, I'd be sticking with AT&T unless Verizon could prove that the compete in both quality and price.

Verizon talks the talk, but they simply do not walk the walk.

C'mon, PLEASE, Apple will not allow Verizon to cannibalize its interface and software set. No matter the complaints about Verizon, and there are some, their network is unmatched. It always works. Period. It's the reason this Mac guy since 1986 is still with Verizon. As soon as it's available, I'm in.

would never leave verizon for

111102

would never leave verizon for at&t for an iPhone. hope the iPhone makes it to verizon - the only way i would ever get one. it is a phone first and foremost and verizon's network does work best for me nationwide.

Well, you then don't live in the north east. I was a Verizon user for many years, and I had no idea how bad it was until my girlfriend moved in with T-Mobile.

I can't believe I suffered. I'd get dropped just driving in town. And this is a major urban area! I am -SO- glad I switched.

Re: No matter the complaints...

I live on Long Island. Had Sprint, Nextel, and Nextel (after the merger).

North Shore of LI (hilly, and vast amounts of trees) is difficult for any carrier (only time I lost service with Verizon)

Verizon is #1 in northeast!
If not for ATT I would have gotten iPhone. My brother lost service with iPhone 3g on the L.I.E. 3X during 20 minute call

THATS A PROBLEM!!

Verizon

You must be living in an alternate universe. I have my beefs with Verizon but the network is not one of them. I'm 20 miles east of Albany yet my LG Voyager accesses the 3G network. Take a look at the coverage map for AT&T - 3G coverage is limited to NYC, Albany and Buffalo metro areas, period. You're claim holds no water at all. The difference may not be as extreme when it comes to voice calls but Verizon is still second to none there as well.

That said, bring the IPhone to Verizon. You think the Storm is a hot sale? I'd setup my tent at Verizon to buy one the 1st day! Verizon has no clue how to truely design a phone like the IPhone - not yet at least (I've tested the Storm, the Curve, and own the Voyager).

Verizon doesn't always work.

78137

Verizon doesn't always work. I tried to switch from AT&T to Verizon and my wife and I immediately switched back because it didn't work in four different places. We have the Dare and the Chocolate 3... AT&T, while it may not be all 3G, it simply has more coverage throughout.

At&t has more coverage

77111

At&t has more coverage throughout? If you're talking world wide perhaps -- I recall hearing an AT&T commercial over the radio and at the end it says "Best Network --- Compared to Global Services".. That's because they don't compete w/ Verizon Wireless Nation wide.. they state it themselves

Verizon is too stupid to get

82123

Verizon is too stupid to get IPhone. I have IPhone and kept verizon account because of others on it. I think AT&T's network is better in my area.Central and western Ohio.

Stop ur hating

10694

Look, I have had both AT&T (because of the IPHONE) and the Blackberry (Verizon) and quite frankly Verizon has got better service in the US period. Anyone who claims otherwise I challenge them to refute the laws of physics or better yet take the basement challenge.

If you or a friend can go down into a basement and make calls with your AT&T phone you would be one of the few. Verizon, I can make calls in dungeons where my friends with AT&T phones don't even get half a bar.

Sometimes it is the phone and

8693

Sometimes it is the phone and not the service, had a Bosch phone once it's atrocious as compared to Nokia which can receive and make calls while the Bosch said there is no service available.

Samsung BlackJack (i607) has

76105

Samsung BlackJack (i607) has similar problems. They were so bad that ATT did a silent recall of the phones made during a specific timerange. Even after getting my phone replaced with a new BlackJack it still doesn't work nearly as well as my old Nokia on the ATT network.

I wouldn't be surprised if nearly all of the problems people attribute to ATT's network dropping calls were due to the junk phones that ATT sells. It's still their fault for selling junk phones but it's not their network. Even the iPhone had major firmware issues that caused dropped calls, the 2.1 firmware update was supposed to fix most of those problems though.

I completely agree

9686

Sometimes it is the phone, we can't forget that. :)
But I'm a Verizon user and considered switching to AT&T for the iPhone, but after comparing plans (forget whether or not I receive calls) Verizon is much better and much more worth the money. For example, AT&T and Verizon both have a very similar beginning plan ($39.99) but AT&T doesn't offer the unlimited nights and weekends that Verizon does, which is a must for me.

My iPhone works perfectly

78118

My iPhone works perfectly fine in my basement. Unlike my work provided Verizon phone which always drifts in and out of service.

Verizon is the NOTwork.

You are on drugs I have both

10298

You are on drugs I have both and I have to use AT&T all the time when Verizon doesnt work. Also had blackberry and sent junk back to Verizon.

hmmm... your mileage may vary

9786

Verizon customer, since AT&T's service (historically) has not been that great in the Santa Cruz area.

AT&T just upgraded the Cell Sites in Santa Cruz county to 3G, so I took my Apple gift cards and bought an iPhone, on Saturday. AT&T's service is no where near that of Verizon (in that area)

So, if this is true... man... I'll go take this poor sounding, crappy AT&T network of an iphone back, and wait for Verizon's.

I agree. I go to Santa Clara

9576

I agree.
I go to Santa Clara Univ, and literally every single ATT person on campus needs to be top floor near a window to get any service, me and my crappy Razr (the newest one, i think V3?) get full bars everywhere. I do have to say RAZRs have pretty rockin' internal antennas though.

Could somebody make a

Could somebody make a map/list of the countries with each kind of cellphone protocol?
Maybe, Apple already filled up all the places with the current technology and the only way to expand to new countries/markets is by adding new protocols.
(China comes to mind.)

Of course, as a side effect, it could expand the current countries with new providers.

As a side note: the Apple/AT&T's 5-years contract is "as-discussed-as-the-10-millions-by/in [pick one]-2008".
"If" began development 2 or 3 years before launching the iPhone, it is possible that "at that time" they signed the [5 years'] contract-

GTFA: Google The F***king Answer.

Not f***ing likely

7597

Apple has far from "filled up all the places with the current technology". The exclusivity deal wasn't signed 2 or 3 years prior to launching the iPhone.

I'd say it's about as likely for Verizon to get the iPhone (which they spurned initially) as it is for monkeys to fly out of my butt. T-Mo is going to be a no-go either, as Apple would still have to re-engineer the phone to put in a 1700MHz 3G radio. This crowd really needs to get out of their mothers' basements and get a life.

Amen brother!

Apple is going to give Verizon the Iphone. It's another 1/3 of the US cell market. They can't turn that down if they want to be taken seriously eventually.

Apple would dominate if this

Seriously, if Apple put the iPhone on all 4 major US carriers, it would, no doubt, become the biggest selling device in the US.

Uh, no it wouldn't. It

9190

Uh, no it wouldn't. It wouldn't even become the biggest selling cellular phone in the world. It *might* become the biggest selling smartphone, but it will never outsell the basic, virtually free cellphone. There are just too many people out there that can't justify spending $200 on a phone or $60 or $70 a month for service. I am not even sure they could outsell Blackberry in the smartphone market given the corporate reliance on Blackberry and Blackberry Enterprise Server.
