New iPhone specs leaked?

AppleiPhoneApps.com (unknown until now by us) says it has the latest iPhone specs. They've put out a lot of what we've already heard but also have some new "info".  We've bolded what we consider new stuff.  Here's their list:

  • 32GB and 16GB to replace current capacities
  • $199 and $299 price-points to be maintained
  • 3.2 Megapixel camera
  • Video recording & editing capabilities
  • Ability to send a picture & video via MMS
  • Discontinuation of the metal band surrounding the edge of the device
  • OLED screen
  • 1.5X The battery life
  • Double the RAM and processing power
  • Built-in FM transmitter
  • Apple logo on the back to light up
  • Rubber-tread backing
  • Sleeker design
  • Built-in compass
  • Revolutionary combination of the camera, GPS, compass, and Google maps to identify photo and inform about photo locations.
  • Turn by turn directions
  • July 17th, 2009 release date

If there is a lighting Apple logo on the back, it will be powered by the screen light, just like MacBooks.  There is no way Apple will use extra juice to illuminate a logo, when battery power is so important in mobile devices.  The rubber tread backing also seems hard to imagine.

We're split on the FM transmitter.  It is a very cool and useful feature, but one Apple hasn't been keen on using up until this point.

dubious

A lot of this sounds pretty dubious to me. Two things of note:

1) "Discontinuation of metal band ..." The band is not just decorative, to remove it they'd have to redesign the whole handset.

2) "Rubber tread back" - Because there is nothing Steve Jobs thinks is more cool than a knobbly textured back?

Some of these specs are either garbled, misunderstood or possibly just crapola.

Do you know whether the new iPhone 3 will have the capacity to
handle emails such as the BlackBerry...?

what?

what?

Dude, are you serious???

Dude, are you serious???

hahahahaha

First time on a tech blog of any sort hmmm? You need to read a newspaper or go out and get some fresh air from time to time.
Oh wait. The only air you have access to is what is inside the moonbase.

Nevermind then.

Other than this...

Guys,

The question seems a bit obvious but let's try "no dumb questions" for this one.

I mean, we could be jerks and lose a potential iPhone customer or we could be patient.

William, if we haven't scared you off by now, what do you mean?

Do you mean does it have Push capability?

THANK YOU

5350

No, I'm not the original poster of the "email" question and yes, I've been using Macs for more than a decade and I absolutely love their products.

But c'mon - this is just one more example why all my "PC" friends think all Mac users are smug and jerks.

Band

4748

It's one of iPhones antennas also.

I'm most excited about the

5468

I'm most excited about the metal band being eliminated! Looks nice until a week later when its all dinged and scratched to hell.

The backlight behind the

6458

The backlight behind the display, either cold cathode or LED, is that lights the logo on Apple's notebooks.

OLEDs don't have a backlight, they emit light themselves, which is what makes the more power efficient. The could not light an Apple logo on the opposite side.

Apple would have to specifically light it which seems wasteful and unnecessary. Though I will say I don't think I would mind, and a single white LED with a plastic diffuser would consume negligible power and make the phone much easier to find when I drop it under my car seat.

The logo could pulsate to

6347

The logo could pulsate to notify of received emails, too. That would justify the slightly increased power usage.

Yeah and this massive white

4050

Yeah and this massive white pulsating Apple logo on the back of your £99 phone that you're trying to be inconspicuous with is going to really help. Why don't they just put a big loud speaker in it which shouts "iPhone alert, please mug me."

Apple logo on the back to light up

5244

If the Apple logo on the back casing does light up I hope it does so with a Xenon flash to work in conjunction with the camera app. Even with a 3.2 MP camera it still won't look correct in low light scenes without having a flash.

Would seem dubious if they´d

4853

Would seem dubious if they´d removed the metal band - it is a design highligt of the device itself, and at the same time a fairly sleek way of hiding maintenance acces.

The FM transmitter? Well.. there are already a good accessories-market for that..

But the OLED and extended battery life could be worth putting money on. Logo or not... you should know it is Apple by now ;)

Yea the only thing that

3947

Yea the only thing that doesnt make sense is the rubber back. I dont like the chrome band either. I love the way it looks but if you are like me and dont like cases it looks like junk quickly, and if you do get a case you cant see it anyway!

I am really hoping for the OLED screen though, that will make this thing nice and thin and also help out with the battery life.

when they say rubber back

4246

when they say rubber back they could mean the same blakc back to the imacs

it would be a pain in the ass

5242

it would be a pain in the ass to get a rubber backed iphone in and out of your jean pocket. if people want to put a rubber case on it then that is there choice but don't make it like that standard

Maybe the light up apple logo

6634

Maybe the light up apple logo isn't intended for general purpose usage (seems too tacky & gimicky), but instead as a flash?

I agree with the noob

3845

The only reason i'd want a glowing apple logo on the back is to offer an LED flashlight for recording pics and video. and, for use as a flashlight! not that the screen didn't do a wonderful job at that already, but something specifically designed to be bright as hell will outshine a screen.

What are you people doing to

4153

What are you people doing to your poor iPhones? I've been using mine for almost a year now and there are zero dents or scratches, no case just an iPod sock.

That site is down

1) FM Transmitter - won't happen. Sucks up power, and the quality is less than what will be available with the 3.0 firmware, because it will a) allow custom hardware/iphone integration, and b) has stereo bluetooth. Many car stereos already allow bluetooth input. Many more have integrated iPod connectors. Apple pushes quality, and FM isn't quality. Also, adding new hardware breaks backward compatibility with v1 & 3g iPhones, making it much less likely.

2) Built-in compass - although I would *love* to see this, because the Android demos of street-view-with-compass are so compelling - i doubt it will happen. Again, because adding new hardware breaks backward compatibility with v1 & 3g iPhones.

3) Rubber backing - won't happen. Mostly because it will kill the accessory market for rubberized cases, which means a bit hit to licensing income. Also, it would not get the S. Jobs aesthetic seal of approval.

way to crap on the rumors

4159

way to crap on the rumors negative nancy

Not to mention that it would

5145

Not to mention that it would not slide easily in an out of your pocket. That's the reason I don't use rubber cases.

that rubber

3656

i think that the "rubber back rumor" is most likely going to be like that black keyboard that the current macbooks have. they feel "rubbery" and they barely scratch. theyll feel good in the hands.

If your reason for a feature

5145

If your reason for a feature not being added is because it breaks backwards compatibility then how do you explain GPS in the iPhone 3G or microphone in the iPod Touch 2G?

IMO, an FM transmitter

4644

IMO, an FM transmitter wouldn't be so bad. I mean, yea it's ancient but still useful to those of us who can't afford the fancy-ass cars. Hell, I still use a CD to Cassette converter and it works just fine!

A built-in compass would greatly improve the GPS features (or lack of). Why can't they just put in a full GPS chip?

I'll have to agree on the rubber backing because NEVER has Apple put rubber backing on any of their products.

A thinner iPhone would be nice. I'll be buying this when I come to raise the money.

A built-in compass would

4732

A built-in compass would greatly improve the GPS features (or lack of). Why can't they just put in a full GPS chip?

The iPhone DOES have a full GPS chip. It directly receives signals from GPS satellites and performs the triangulation on-the-fly, exactly in the same fashion as, say, a Garmin or Magellan GPS unit does.

A built-in electronic magnetic compass would permit the iPhone to know it's orientation on the earth's surface while motionless relative the the earth. This would make the unit more compelling for hiking or other endeavors where you need to know the direction of "north" while not moving. Undoubtably there are many other applications for such orientation data.

GPS

4842

Agreed. Also the GPS function does not currently work when there is no GSM signal - like in an airplane. Would be nice to track where we are in relation to the ground without having to carry a Garmin/Magellan, etc.

This seems to perfect to be

3743

This seems to perfect to be true. The rubbers back isprobably the most accurate of all the rumors that they posted since the mac observer (who leaked the iPhone 3g photo) showed a rubber back. Please let this be true. If it has 1.5x the battery life, there would be no excuse for background apps.
