After launching Instagram Stories in August, today Instagram will start to promote Stories created from people you don’t follow within the Explore tab. That announcement comes as Facebook today started allowing at least some users to test its similar Snapchat-like functionality called ‘Messenger Day’.

Following the launch of Apple Pay on the web with macOS Sierra late last month, Intuit today added the feature to its popular QuickBooks Online service. That means that invoices sent using the software can now be paid using Apple Pay:

Apple has confirmed iPhone 7 launch dates for more countries today on its website including Egypt on October 20, Korea and Colombia on October 21, and a handful more planned for a week later on October 28.
Korea and Colombia will also get access to the new Apple Watch Series 2 on the 21st.

Facebook is today introducing an Events app that will give you a standalone experience for keeping track of all your Facebook events separate from its main app.

Bloomberg reports that Apple this week won an appeal in its long-running case against Samsung over its slide-to-unlock patent.
The decision reinstates an original $119.6 million verdict owed to Apple that a U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit ruled was wrongly thrown out in a previous decision back in February.

Apple has added Israel to its list of upcoming iPhone 7 launch countries today as it officially launches the device in India. The device will become available in the country on Oct. 20, as will the new Apple Watch Series 2 lineup.
Apple also confirmed upcoming iPhone 7 launches for a handful of African and Middle Eastern countries today, including: Jordan and Oman on October 15, and Maurice, Madagascar, Maroc, and Uganda on October 21st. Today at its press event to unveil its new Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones, a rebranding of its Nexus-line of devices, Google also took the wraps off new features coming to its Assistant and Home platforms and more. The company highlighted claims that its new smartphones have the best camera of any mobile device yet, including comparing it to the new iPhone 7 camera.

The jet black iPhone 7 might be a little more prone to scratches and fingerprints with its glossy finish, but that didn’t stop me from choosing the color for my iPhone this year. And I’m glad I did— it’s even more stunning in person than how it appears in photographs.

Apple today updated its executive profiles webpage to remove mention of “online stores” from retail chief Angela Ahrendts’ bio, reflecting a recent change to the executive’s official title. Ahrendts’ new title is, simply, Senior Vice President Retail.

AOL is launching an Alto app today for iOS (and Android) that aims to offer a fresh take on email. AOL’s new app features a single dashboard that intelligently organizes the most important info from your email, calendar and elsewhere.
Alto, which was previously available on the desktop for a limited number of testers, hopes you’ll want to ditch the traditional inbox-format for email, serving up the most important info from emails in card-form in what it refers to as the Dashboard.

If you’re looking for info on how to repair or replace your iPhone 7 or 7 Plus battery, display or other components, look no further. As it does every year, repair guide site iFixit is usually one of the first to rip apart Apple’s new iPhones to find out what’s inside, and for that reason they are also one of the first to offer up detailed guides on how to repair and replace various parts of the devices.

The Intercept’s Sam Biddle published a story today citing police documents that he reported prove Apple logs every contact you type in iMessage to share with law enforcement without telling anyone. But it’s not exactly news. Apple doesn’t log every contact you type into your Messages app, and there’s already a lot of publicly available information from Apple about it storing contact info that could be shared with law enforcement. From The Intercept:
“Every time you type a number into your iPhone for a text conversation, the Messages app contacts Apple servers to determine whether to route a given message over the ubiquitous SMS system… over Apple’s proprietary and more secure messaging network…The document implies that Messages transmits these numbers to Apple when you open a new chat window and select a contact or number with whom to communicate”
To be clear, Apple isn’t actually sharing any of your conversations — those are entirely encrypted and out of its reach– we’re only talking about contact numbers here.
