Apple’s former retail chief Ron Johnson talks working with Jobs on creation of retail stores (Video)

[youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_HByVsugQY]

Apple’s former retail chief Ron Johnson— the man in charge of retail when Apple first launched its brick and mortar stores back in 2001— recently sat down for a talk at Stanford where he gave some insight into the work that went into Apple’s original retail efforts. After a brief intro on his work before Apple, RoJo eventually gets into Apple retail stores, working with Steve Jobs, and the decision to redesign the Apple retail store experience at the last minute.

The thing I remember from Steve is you have to be willing to start again. We were launching the stores and one day he came up with the idea of the digital hub… The next week we were going to our weekly store meeting, we were designing the store…. I said Steve Ive been thinking and I think the store is organized all wrong… we’ve organized it like a retail store around products… the store should be organized on music and movies and things you do…

He also gives some insight into the decisions Apple made with its original retail store experience. For example, the ability to attract customers by offering high-speed internet connected display units for its Macs was something most others weren’t doing at the time.

There’s so many reasons to come… you can get help, you can bring the kids and play at the kid table, you can learn, you can surf the internet, check your mail…  when we launched the Apple Stores, guess what percent of people had broadband or high speed internet in the US? 3 percent… no one had ever seen a high-speed internet.. I said Steve this is going to make Apple computers seem really good because they are going to come try the internet and they’ll think they are fast. We created a place for communities to form where people could check their email and experience the Mac.

The rest of the interview is an interesting watch with Johnson telling many stories about lessons learned at Apple and his time working with Jobs. “When I started working with him he said Ron If you don’t mind I really want to not be an employee I want to be a friend… He had this intense way of developing these close relationships and the first time we met we talked for 2 or 3 hours… Through the years Steve and I would talk most days on the phone… The most misunderstood thing about Steve is that he’s the best delegator I’ve ever met.”

Disney sales on iTunes in Japan resume as companies reach new agreement

Disney-Frozen-iTunesDisney briefly stopped sales of its on-demand content through iTunes in Japan after it failed to reach a deal with Apple. The company confirmed the news but followed up today with a statement on its website claiming that all services have been restored.

There’s not much explantation about the reason behind the removal of Disney content in Japan in the company’s statement, but it did confirm to Variety that “the interruption was due to difficulties negotiating the renewal of the old contract between Apple and Disney Japan. The new contract was signed on Wednesday and both rentals (VoD) and electronic sell-through returned to normal.”

Apple has close long had close ties with the company since Steve Jobs held a position as a director following the sale of Pixar to Disney. Apple has also named Disney CEO Bog Iger as a board of the company since 2011 and Disney content appeared as some of the first on-demand video content from a major studio at the launch of iTunes. The removal of content, if only for a brief period, is a reminder of just how important Apple’s content deals with studios are and just how quickly content can be removed if those relationships go south.

We’ve reached out to Apple for comment but didn’t hear back immediately at the time of publishing.

Almost two years after replacing Google Maps with its own Maps app in iOS 6, Apple has now brought its Maps solution to the web and made the switch for its Find My iPhone web app.

iPhone 5S the most popular smartphone worldwide in Q1, 8GB 4S hangs on to top 5

ABI-smartphones-July-2014ABI Research is out with its latest report of the top 20 smartphone models sold worldwide with the 16GB iPhone 5s taking the top spot for Q1 2014. Apple and Samsung dominate the majority of the top spots, which is no surprise to anyone following smartphone marketshare numbers. All of the top 5 that ABI shared in its press release are made up of Apple and Samsung devices with variants of the Galaxy S4, S3, and the 8GB iPhone 4 following behind the iPhone 5s.

The report notes that Sony and LG also have models in the top 20 with Xiaomi making its first appearance and Huawei getting bumped out of the rankings:

“The presence of the Samsung Galaxy S3 i9300 16GB and iPhone 4s 8GB in the top five is testament to the enduring appeal of these models and the vendors strong brand, enabling a long and profitable lifecycle, that other vendors can only dream of,” finished Spencer.

Sony, LG, and for the first time, Xiaomi make up the rest of the top 20, with Huawei dropping out. “The much talked about Chinese vendor Xiaomi’s top device by shipment volume is the Redmi, which is now available outside of China, at a very affordable $130,” added Spencer.

While the 8GB iPhone 4S continues to be one of the most popular devices worldwide and Apple’s most popular device selling into the lower-end market, Apple has recently been experimenting with a cheaper 8GB iPhone 5c in some countries that could replace the iPhone 4/4S as Apple’s entry-level, low-end iPhone.

With a long list of leaks in recent months showing mock ups of the 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch iPhones expected for release this fall, today we get a look at what is reportedly our first at the flexibility of the iPhone 6’s new sapphire cover glass. There’s not much information surrounding this leak or confirmation that what we’re looking at is the real deal, but the sapphire material is indeed something Apple has ramped up production of in recent months at its new Arizona plant

New service bypasses Apple’s Activation Lock theft deterrent feature for $150

Site default logo image

Activation-Lock-02

A new service from smartphone unlocking company ChronicUnlocks is offering iPhone users the ability to remove Apple’s Activation Lock security feature that the company first introduced in iOS 7.

Activation Lock, a security feature that Apple first announced alongside iOS 7, is supposed to be a theft deterrent by making it harder for lost and stolen devices to be reactivated on the second hand market. The feature accomplishes this by linking a device’s activation to the user’s iCloud account. Since its launch Activation Lock has been credited by police as helping reduce iPhone theft in some cities, but there are some legitimate cases where users are unable to remove the Activation Lock.

Samsung borrows a line from BlackBerry, calls iPhone users ‘Wall Huggers’ in new ad

Site default logo image

[youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mzMUTrTYD9s]

As Samsung has done with past TV commercials for its flagship Galaxy S5, its latest ad for the device again takes the iPhone head-on. The new ad, titled “Wall Hugger”, focuses on mocking the iPhone’s battery life while showing off the S5’s Ultra Power Saving Mode and removable battery features. And in usual Samsung-fashion, it also borrows a line from comments Blackberry executive John Chen made back in March…

A new patent application published today by the United States Patent & Trademark Office details a system Apple could use to automatically configure security and other settings of a device based on its location or the habits of its user (Google filed for the same patent 2 months prior but who’s counting?). The majority of the patent discusses intelligently adjusting settings by detecting a device’s location while using retinal scans, DNA, fingerprints, or other biosensors to present an appropriate level of security to the user:

Site default logo image

iPhone6_Poster_00000

According to a new report from China Times (translated by GforGames), Apple will make the next-gen iPhone even thinner by moving from two brightness enhancement films in the iPhone’s display to just one. The move will reportedly allow Apple to have an overall thinner design for the iPhone 6, but could cause supply issues in the process as its suppliers work to get the new display tech ready. According to the report, the switch to a single brightness enhancement film in the new backlight might result in yield issues:

Screenshot showing new iTunes U “Student Discussions” feature

Apple today announced an update to its iTunes U educational app that includes a number of new features for iPad including course creation tools, a Student Discussions feature and improved management tools for teachers.

“Education is at the core of Apple’s DNA and iTunes U is an incredibly valuable resource for teachers and students,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services. “iTunes U features an amazing selection of academic materials for everyone around the world. Now, with the ability to better manage and discuss educational content, learning becomes even more personalized on iPad.”

The new features will begin rolling out July 8 with the ability for teachers to create and manage previously uploaded lessons directly from the iPad. Apple says the course creation features will let teachers grab content from iWork, iBooks Author or “any of the over 75,000 educational apps available for iPad.” It will also let teachers use the iPad’s camera to include shots and video of real-world items in courses. The course creation feature will be available to educators in all 69 with the materials they create distributed in up 155 countries.

As for students, a new Discussions feature will bring a social element to the app allowing students and teachers to easily interact with one another: With Discussions in the iTunes U app, students can automatically follow classroom discussions and join conversations on new topics, or set up push notifications for when new topics are started or replies are added to active exchanges. Teachers can participate in forums too, and have the ability to moderate discussions by removing any off-topic messages or replies.

In its press release, Apple said “nearly 30,000 Multi-Touch™ books have been created by independent teachers and publishers worldwide.”

iPhone-5s-test-drive

Update #2: AT&T’s official statement:

AT&T GoPhone prepaid service is now available in Apple Retail stores. Prepaid service is also available for iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, iPhone 4S in AT&T and Cricket Wireless stores and online at att.com and at cricketwireless.com.

Update: A contact has confirmed that AT&T’s prepaid GoPhone plans are also supported by iPhones at Apple Retail Store locations as we previously reported to expect…

Following our report earlier this month that Apple was preparing to begin selling iPhones with prepaid plans through its retail stores, today T-Mobile confirmed iPhones with its prepaid service can now be purchased and activated in Apple stores across the country.

To go along with the launch, T-Mobile will offer discounts in the form of $50 off the device for prepaid plans and a $50 iTunes gift card for iPhones activated on its Simple Choice postpaid plans.

T-Mobile customers can now purchase and activate an iPhone with T-Mobile prepaid service in more than 250 Apple stores across the nation. In addition, for a limited time, customers who purchase a new iPhone with T-Mobile prepaid service can get $50 off the device, and those who buy a new iPhone with a T-Mobile Simple Choice postpaid plan can get a $50 iTunes gift card.

T-Mobile’s fine print notes: “Must activate device in-store. Limit 1 device per customer. Offer only valid with activation of  $50 or $70 worth of service. Offer subject to change.” That lines up with our earlier report that Apple stores would offer the prepaid iPhones on -T-Mobile’s’ $50/month (1GB LTE data) and $70/month (5GB LTE data) unlimited data plans.

Opera Mini for iOS gets redesign, themes, QR code reader & much more

Opera Mini, the mobile version of Opera’s desktop web browser, today gets updated to version 8 with a brand new UI and much more.  On top of a completely redesigned UI that makes the app fit in nicer with iOS 7, the update also introduces enhanced options for Opera’s power saving and compression modes that offers data savings:

Opera Mini 8 lets you choose from three different modes of exploring the vast world of the web:

* Opera Mini mode offers huge compression of web traffic, up to 90%, and data savings. In areas with poor coverage and tough network conditions Opera Mini saves both time and money.

* Opera Turbo mode saves slightly less data than Opera Mini mode, but offers better website compatibility, making it the ideal browsing mode for most users.

* Data savings off is a no-compression, straight-to-the-source option, that ensures maximum website compatibility.

Also new in the updated version of Opera Mini is a new and improved customizable Speed Dial page, a Discover tab that serves up content from your favorite sources, and a new tab gallery. The app also makes it easier to switch between search sources, offers the ability to share URLs via QR codes, and introduces customizable themes.

The app is available on the App Store now for both iPhone and iPad. Screenshots of the iPad app are below:

The Weather Channel iPad app gets new iOS 7-style redesign

The Weather Channel app for iPad gets a nice update today that brings an overhauled design that the company says is closely aligned to the iOS 7 aesthetic. It also introduces new background photos that display the current weather conditions of the location you’re viewing and tweaked navigation that makes moving around the app easier.

The Weather Channel will officially be replacing Yahoo as the source for Apple’s stock Weather app in the upcoming release of iOS 8 this fall. Part of that decision, according to a recent report, was due to some new enhancements made to The Weather Channel service over the last year.

The Weather Channel app version 4.0 for iPad is available for free on the App Store.

Car makers will offer Android Auto alongside CarPlay later this year

How will Google’s new ‘Android Auto’ CarPlay competitor compare? On top of opening up the SDK, unlike Apple, to messaging and audio apps, it also has a ton of support right of the bat through the Open Automotive Alliance. Following Google’s unveiling of its new Android Auto connected car platform, a long list of both new and old members of the Open Automotive Alliance have confirmed support for the new feature. Many of which are also confirmed partners for CarPlay and at least some plan to launch both platforms simultaneously in upcoming vehicles. A press release lists a number of new OAA members including Bentley, LG, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Mazda, Maserati, Volvo and many more. The news also confirms that we’ll see aftermarket solutions for Android Auto from companies like Pioneer, Parrot and Alpine, which are also building aftermarket solutions for CarPlay. Here’s a full list of new OAA companies that will support Android Auto:

  • Alpine
  • Bentley
  • Clarion
  • CloudCar
  • Delphi
  • FIAT Chrysler
  • Freescale
  • FUJITSU TEN
  • HARMAN
  • Infiniti
  • JVCKENWOOD
  • LG
  • Maserati
  • Mazda
  • Mitsubishi
  • Nissan
  • Panasonic
  • Parrot
  • Pioneer
  • Renault
  • Renesas
  • SEAT
  • Škoda
  • Subaru
  • Suzuki
  • Symphony Teleca
  • Volkswagen
  • Volvo

That list doesn’t include founding and old members like Audi, GM, Google, Honda, Hyundai and others. Volvo and Hyundai have now independently confirmed that they will both support the platform. Interestingly, both companies are also confirmed partners of Apple’s competing CarPlay platform.

When it comes to Volvo, the company announced today that it’s joining the Open Automotive Alliance and plans to bring Android Auto to all its cars using a new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) starting with the all-new XC90. That’s notable considering that’s also the first vehicle Volvo will use to introduce Apple’s CarPlay feature later this year. Up until now there was some question about how a platform from Google might co-exist alongside Apple’s platform, but it appear at least some manufacturers plan to offer both of the competing platforms side by side in new vehicles. We’ll have to see if others decide to go Apple or Android only or offer exclusivity windows for either platform. We’ll also have to see if aftermarket solutions– like these ones from Pioneer— pack in support for both features or limit hardware to Android or CarPlay.

Hyundai, another confirmed Apple partner, will also be bringing Android Auto to its in-dash displays alongside CarPlay. Honda, also a confirmed Apple partner, released a similar announcement on Android Auto saying the feature will appear in select vehicles starting in 2015. It noted “Applicable Honda vehicles will be cross-compatible with CarPlay and Android Auto. The vehicle will automatically detect the smart phone OS.”

Google previews completely redesigned Android “L”, Android TV, ‘Android Auto’ CarPlay competitor, & more at I/O

Google’s response to Apple’s WWDC kicks off today with the opening keynote address at the Google I/O conference and, like Apple, this time around Google gave a full preview of the next version of Android ahead of a fall release. Android “L” (we’re assuming a dessert name will be decided on later) introduces a completely new design language as well as major enhancements for battery life, a new Android Runtime to replace Dalvik, and integration with its Android Wear platform. We also got a look at its answer to CarPlay and Apple TV: Android Auto and an accompanying SDK for developers and a revamped ‘Android TV’ platform. Also new is the Android One program to help get devices into emerging markets and a Continuity like feature for Chromebooks and Android devices.

Google’s Sundar Pichai, who had some words about Tim Cook recently, also shared some numbers on Android that appeared to be in response to Cook’s comment at WWDC regarding Android switchers and the platform’s security. Google claimed it now has 1 billion 30-day active users and also shared that it’s now at 62% of the overall tablet market. That market is based on shipments, however, so to drive the point home Google gave us a number on usage: 42% of YouTube usage on tablets is Android. He also made reference to the fact that Android had many of the features that Apple just introduced– widgets, third-party keyboards– as far back as 2009.

Head below for a roundup of all the news from 9to5Google:

Google announces Android ‘L’ with ‘Material Design’, developer preview coming soon

Google announces Android One program to create high quality, affordable smartphones in developing markets

Numbers from Google I/O: Over 1 billion 30 day active users, 62% of overall tablet market

Android “L” will include Factory Reset Protection (kill switch) and Universal Data Controls (privacy) to enhance security

Google announces Android Auto connected car platform

Google announces over 300 million active mobile web users

Google announces Project Volta & Battery Saver to vastly improve battery life on Android

“L” version of Android to drop Dalvik, introduce new Android Runtime with better performance, graphics

Android TV: Google’s next foray into the living room announced

Sundar Pichai to Tim Cook: Android’s not a toxic hell stew, it’s just a more popular operating system

Site default logo image

Sundar-Pichai-Android-BloombergBloomberg Businessweek just published a lengthy profile and interview with Google’s head of Android and Chrome Sundar Pichai and within addressed some of Apple’s recent comments about Android. While much of the conversation circled around what we can expect from Google at this year’s developer conference and Sundar’s scheduled keynote address — wearables and TV will be a big focus— Sundar was also asked his thoughts on Apple’s recent announcements at its own WWDC developer conference earlier this month.

While noting that much of what Apple announced for iOS 8 were features that Android already had— third party keyboards, widgets, etc— Sundar said shipping a new version of Google Play every six weeks makes Android allows them to “move the platform faster than anyone else and provide a consistent layer for developers.” Next he addressed Tim Cook’s claim from WWDC that Apple is gaining lots of new customers from Android switchers:
