First look at gameplay from the upcoming Pokémon Go iOS game

After announcing a deal in September to produce a Pokémon Go games with Nintendo and Alphabet-owned Niantic, the Pokémon people are today showing a little more about how gameplay will work and giving us a first look at the title coming to both iOS and Android devices.

The game uses augmented reality features to blend real world objects and locations with the gameplay, and the company today gave the run down and a look at how exactly that will work:

Surprisingly, the online Apple Store now presents Microsoft Office 365 as a recommended iPad accessory

In a surprise move, the U.S. online Apple Store now presents Microsoft Office 365 as a recommended iPad accessory when you buy the new 9.7-inch iPad Pro. It’s unclear when this started happening, as The Verge notes that it also appears when purchasing the iPad Air 2, iPad mini 2, or iPad mini 4, but some readers report having seen it for a couple of weeks or more.

The move is surprising for two reasons …

Google Maps iOS app now gives ride fares & pickup times for five more services

The iOS Google Maps app has long shown you Uber fares and pickup times when you search for a destination, provided that you have the Uber app installed. Google has integrated five more services into its mapping app. Most of these are for countries outside the USA – though NYC dwellers can also use Gett.

If you have a provider’s app installed and tap on the ride service tab, you’ll be able to see fare estimates and pick up times if a car is available near you. Select a service, and we’ll take you directly to their app for you to book your ride with one tap. When it makes sense, we’ll also show ride service availability when viewing the map in walking and transit directions, and multiple ride services options for each provider—where they exist. For example, if you’re using Uber, starting today, we’ll now show uberX, uberXL and UberBLACK for an easy and quick comparison.

DeskConnect file transfer app updated with share extension, 3D Touch support, and more

Site default logo image

DeskConnect is a file transfer app from the makers of Workflow. It allows you to easily share files between your iPhone, iPad and Mac. DeskConnect isn’t an app that will replace a service like Dropbox or even iCloud, because it was designed solely with file transfers in mind.

We reviewed the initial version of DeskConnect back in 2013. Since then, a lot has changed — iOS has gained inter-app communication via handy share extensions, iCloud Drive has made it easier to move and manipulate files across a variety of storage solutions, and AirDrop can now easily transfer files between iOS devices and Macs.

In 2016, where does a new version of DeskConnect fit in? Does AirDrop make it redundant? Have a look at our overview for the details.

YouTube for iPad gains Split View and Slide Over multitasking on iOS 9, still lacks PIP

The YouTube app for iOS sees an update today adding support for Slide Over and Split View multitasking. Even though iOS 9’s multitasking functionality has finally reached the app, picture-in-picture support remains to be seen. Users will note that background audio is available for current YouTube RED subscribers. The newly introduced multitasking functionality should help to appease those who’ve longed for the ability to catch up on their favorite YouTubers while also flicking through email or other apps.

LastPass Authenticator for iOS launches to improve the two-factor authentication process

Site default logo image

Security-minded individuals looking to simplify their two-factor authentication logins may want to take a look at LastPass’s new app today, LastPass Authenticator. The iOS App Store currently has a few different apps that can already handle two-factor authentication logins, like Google Authenticator and 1Password. Most of them come with the minor annoyance that once the app is launched, a user has to find the site’s login, and then type the OTP into the site before it expires. LastPass Authenticator looks to improve that experience by allowing users to quickly approve the new login requests directly from their devices.
