iOS 14.5 no longer blocks web searches for ‘Asian’ in Safari with content restrictions enabled

Earlier this year, some users noticed unfortunate behavior in iOS 14 that blocked any web searches in Safari containing the word “Asian” when adult content restrictions were enabled. Luckily, it seems that Apple has finally addressed this issue with iOS 14.5, which is currently available to developers and public beta users.

Fraudulent Website Warning gets privacy boost in iOS 14.5

Apple’s Fraudulent Website Warning is designed to alert you when you’re about to visit a website that is known to host malware, or that is believed to be a phishing site. Previously, that check consulted a database hosted on a Google server, but as of iOS 14.5 it instead uses an Apple proxy to better protect user privacy.

Among all the new features included with macOS Big Sur 11.3 beta 1, which was released today for developers, Apple mentioned that Safari will have more customization options. Although the company didn’t clarify what exactly will change, 9to5Mac now found out that the default macOS web browser will have the option to override a new window or tab page with extensions.

Apple rolling out Safari translation feature to more countries

Apple introduced its own translator this year, which comes as a standalone app on the iPhone and also as a built-in feature in Safari for iOS 14 macOS Big Sur users. Although the Translate app works with 11 languages, the built-in Safari translator was restricted to some regions — which is changing now as Apple is now rolling out this option to more countries.

If you’ve updated to iOS 14, you can now change your default iOS browser to either Firefox or DuckDuckGo if you wish. Both browsers have been approved by Apple to take advantage of the new option to change your default web browser from Safari. (Google’s Chrome had already been approved.)
