Cycloramic figures out how to keep the rounded iPhone 6 spinning for hands-free video

Site default logo image

[youtube=http://youtu.be/_uKkqVKQIbY]

Cycloramic, the app that takes hands-free 360-degree video by using the iPhone’s built-in vibration motors to spin the device, is today arriving for iPhone 6. But with the iPhone 6’s new rounded design (opposed to the flat edges of the iPhone 5 and 5S) the company also had to figure out a way to get it to stand upright on its own.  For that it recommends using the iPhone’s power adaptor that Apple includes in the box, as demoed in the video above released earlier today by the developers.

Review: Hyper’s iStick, the first USB drive w/ integrated Lightning connector

Site default logo image

iStick-Hyper-01

While most of my content goes straight to the cloud these days and is usually easily accessible to move around, download or stream from any of my devices, I still found myself getting a lot of use out of Hyper’s new iStick. It’s one of the first made-for-iPhone USB flash drives that also includes an integrated Lightning connector to easily transfer content to and from the device to others. Hyper’s companion app is what makes the experience more than just storage, however…

Memo: Apple HR head Denise Young-Smith announces major enhancements to employee benefits

Site default logo image

Apple_Diversity

Apple announced some new benefits today for employees in an internal email, but it’s also looking to get some press out of the move by making the news public in a statement to Fortune. 9to5Mac has obtained the full copy of the email to employees from the company’s head of HR Denise Young-Smith (embedded below).

We know how hard all of you are working: from the teams designing, producing, launching, and supporting our incredible products to the thousands of retail employees sharing the excitement and experience face to face with our customers every day. You are the reason we are able to change the world, again and again. We appreciate all that you give to Apple to make us great. Because we want to make sure you get the support you need, we’re excited to introduce significant changes to our global well-being programs for both part-time and full-time employees.

Among the updated benefits are increased time off for parental leave, reimbursements for educational classes, a Student Loan Refinancing Program for U.S. employees and an donation matching program. Smith told employees in her email to employees today that Apple has matched “over $25 million of employees’ charitable contributions” since its Apple Matching Gifts Program started.

Marc Newson says his role at Apple is only part-time for a specific project

marc-newson-nike-zvezdochka-gagosian-shop-01

In an interview with dezeen.com, designer and new Apple employee Marc Newson spoke about his latest project with Heineken while providing a little bit more insight into his new role at Apple. While we knew as of early last month that Newson, who happens to be a close friend of Apple design guru Jony Ive, was joining Apple, Newson confirmed in the interview that the position will only be part-time for a specific project.

When asked if he’d still be taking on projects other than at Apple, Newson said: “Yes absolutely, because my role at Apple doesn’t necessitate all of my time and that was for very specific reasons, so absolutely, my company still exists and I remain based in the UK.”

As for what exactly has been working on at Apple, you’ll have to get through PR first:

Newson did, however, talk a bit about his thoughts on the future of the watch industry: “There will always be a place for mechanical watches. Apart from telling the time – which is all they do – they’re about something completely different. You know, I think that the mechanical watch industry will continue to exist in much the same way as it does right now. To be honest I’m not really intimately aware of what’s happening with the world of mechanical watches right now.”

His new draft beer machine for Heineken happens to look at a lot like a Mac Pro.

The interview with Newson is available to read in full here.

PSA for parents: Apple recommending inappropriate apps for kids due to App Store bug

If you use the Kids sections in the App Store for finding appropriate apps for children, you might want to be careful until Apple fixes a bug that’s currently displaying the wrong apps for kids. Specifically, the “Kids” category under the App Store’s Top Charts section is currently displaying apps that should go in the main “All Categories” section. That means that the All Kids, Kids 5 & Under, Kids 6-8, and Kids 9-11 categories are currently displaying many apps that are inappropriate for kids (pictured above).

The bug appears to be iOS 8 only, and is present in App Stores in at least the US, Canada, and Germany. Reader and developers at Happy-Touch informed us of the  issue, which we confirmed on an iOS device in the Canadian and US App Stores. Apple is aware of the bug.

Apple’s design team headed to Paris Fashion Week, likely for Apple Watch event

Site default logo image
Apple-design-team-01

Is that Jony Ive and Marc Newson at the top right?

Update: Both relevant photos have since been removed from Instagram.

Following a report earlier today that Apple and French fashion retailer Colette were teasing a one day in-store experience, there’s now more evidence the collaboration might be for Apple’s upcoming Apple Watch. It appears that Apple’s design team could also be headed to the event or at least to the same city, lending more weight to the idea that Apple Watch is about to get some stage time during Paris Fashion Week.

Review: Worried about iPhone 6/6 Plus bending in your pocket? This might be the perfect case for you

Site default logo image

LD-West-Holser-01

This holster case from Toronto-based LD West seems completely ridiculous at first glance, but it starts to make a lot more sense when you realize your oversized iPhone 6 or 6 Plus might no longer fit in your pants pocket. Strapping my phone to my side with what looks like an over-the-shoulder gun holster doesn’t exactly vibe with my usually minimalistic approach to iPhone cases. But it turns out the product is much more than just the gimmick I thought it was.
