Weep for humanity, Kim Kardashian: Hollywood app reportedly set to take in $200 million this year

According to a report from TMZ, Kim Kardashian’s latest game for iPhone and iPad is set to take in $200 million with Kardashian’s share coming in somewhere in the neighborhood of $85 million.

Sources familiar with the deal tell TMZ … Kim’s cut is 45% of net profits.  The game — “Kim Kardashian: Hollywood” — is set to gross a reported $200 million this year alone.

We’re told the actual expenses associated with the business are relatively low.  A straight 45% cut of $200 million totals a whopping $90 million. To put this in context … according to Forbes, Kim made $28 million last year.

Keep in mind that the app itself is free. All of that revenue is from in-app purchases like a $59 “Huge Star Pack” and other in-game items users purchase while playing celebrity in the Glu developed game. Expenses for the games are reportedly somewhere around $10 million, but there’s no word on if these numbers take Apple’s 30 percent cut into account. The revenue estimate of $200 million is reportedly for this year alone after the title launched back in May.

The Kim Kardashian: Hollywood app is available for iPhone and iPad on the App Store.

Review: Overcast for iPhone, the newest contender for the iOS podcast app market

Site default logo image

With Instapaper and The Magazine, Marco Arment effectively invented the read-it-later and independent publishing idioms on iOS. Naturally, competitors followed but Arment was already a ‘front runner’ in the market. With Overcast, Arment is the follower. Overcast joins a whole host of other developers in a segment of the App Store that is already well established. It’s a different set of challenges.

In many respects, Overcast acts like its the only podcast app on the iPhone. I mean this in a good way. There aren’t any gimmicky extras or visual widgets to try and spur interest. This is very much Arment’s take on how a podcast app should look and behave. Read on for our full review …

Paul McCartney releases five classic albums as iPad apps – more content, lower cost

Site default logo image

The Guardian reports that Paul McCartney has released five of his classic albums as iPad apps, offering remastered audio tracks, videos, interviews, photos, and artwork from both albums and singles.

Five of his classic albums – Band on the Run, McCartney, McCartney II, RAM and Wings over America – have been turned into iPad apps by label Concord Music Group, and released through Apple’s App Store.

Surprisingly, despite the additional content, the cost of the apps is lower than buying just the albums alone…

Google Chrome for iOS update adds Cast support to web pages, gets a tweaked icon

Site default logo image

Google has released an updated version of the Google Chrome application for iOS today, bringing at least one interesting new feature to the app: mobile websites that have Cast support will now work with all of your Cast-capable devices. It’s unclear how the feature works at the moment, but according to the release notes, developers are going to need to add support to their webpages before they can take advantage of the feature.

Also, as will likely be praised by iOS users everywhere, the version 36.0.1985.49 update goes the way of Google Hangouts and finally gets rid of the infamous “lip” located at the bottom of the app icon:

Snapchat introduces Geofilters, bringing special filters to specific locations

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJx6R5zbIfk

The well-renowned social snap-sharing application Snapchat today introduced a new feature it is calling Geofilters, bringing you special custom-designed graphics that can easily be applied to photos taken in specific geographic locations. In the above video, a couple of girls take a snap at what appears to be a bicycle shop, and a quick swipe to the right places a small yellow bicycle tire on the top-left of their photo.

As mentioned on the official Snapchat blog, privacy disclaimer and all:

We’ve had a lot of fun drawing up new filters for special locations in Los Angeles and New York. Swipe right on the preview screen to check them out – they’ll change depending on which neighborhoods you’re in! Although you’ll need to enable location services for this feature, we don’t store your location.

Right now, Snapchat has only incorporated these filters at specific locations in Los Angeles and New York, but it will be interesting to see if the company expands the feature to other locations in the future — or maybe even opens these filters up to be crowd-sourced in some way. It doesn’t appear that you need to update your Snapchat client to take advantage of Geofilters.

Apple begins encrypting iCloud email sent between providers

Site default logo image

Last month Apple confirmed that it would soon beef up encryption for iCloud email following a report detailing security flaws in major email services. While Apple previously encrypted emails sent between its own iCloud customers, now the company has enabled encryption for emails in transit between iCloud and third-party services for me.com and mac.com email addresses.

The change is documented on Google’s transparency website that shows the percentage of emails encrypted in transit for both inbound and outbound email exchanges (pictured below):

PayPal takes a page from Passbook, adds virtual loyalty cards to iOS app

PayPal has updated its iOS app with support for loyalty cards from a long list of selected retailers. The app allows you to select one of the supported companies from the list and scan the barcode on your loyalty or discount card, then saves the data in a digital wallet. The update puts PayPal in competition with Apple’s stock Passbook application, which also allows for storage of loyalty cards and other similar information.

The update also includes bug fixes and removes the ability to scan a check using the device’s camera to deposity money in your PayPal account. You can grab the version 5.5 update for free on the App Store.

What’s New in Version 5.5
Loyalty cards, login, and more!

• Link all of your favorite loyalty cards to PayPal. Carry virtual versions on your mobile. Your wallet deserves the break.
• Vroom! Faster logins are here. We did some work behind the scenes to speed things up for you.
• No bug is safe! We’re finding and fixing them as fast as we can.
• We’re no longer offering the “scan a check” feature. Not to worry. You can still add money to PayPal directly from your bank account.

Shazam’s iOS app becomes a bit more useful with new Rdio integration

Shazam, the popular music identifier service that will be integrated into Siri this fall with iOS 8, has received an update today for iOS that brings a major new feature. Shazam has essentially turned its app into a streaming music service of sort by integrating deeply with Rdio. Now, if you tag a song using Shazam, you can listen to the complete song via Rdio right within the Shazam app. In our brief testing today, the functionality seems to work well. You do need the Rdio app installed and an Rdio account.

Review: Wiper encrypted messaging/calling app with neat erase feature (and iOS 8 update details)

Site default logo image

Yes, another secure and ephemeral messaging app. There’s Wickr, Snapchat, Confide, so what makes Wiper Messenger different? I’ve had the chance to play around with the new free chatting app on iOS, and it seems to act as a fusion of WhatsApp, Snapchat, and Wickr. The app prompts you for your email address or phone number in order to create your account, and then you are brought to a fairly simple interface with three tabs across the bottom: Chats, Contacts, and More. Let’s go tab-by-tab:

Apple seeds Safari 7.1 & 6.2 with WebKit improvements to developers and AppleSeed users

Site default logo image

Apple has released a new beta version of Safari to beta testers in the AppleSeed program and Mac developers. The new version for Mavericks is 7.1, while Moutain Lion users will see version 6.2. The update includes several upgrades to the WebKit engine that powers the browser.

According to the release notes, the changes include support for WebGL, IndexedDB, and JavaScript tweaks, among other things. There is also apparently a change to the way the app handles extensions, as the beta disables all installed add-ons by default and the notes request that developers check for any compatiblity issues.

Version 7.1 will likely be the last major update to Safari for Mavericks before the launch of OS X Yosemite, which will include the all-new Safari 8. The full seed notes for this beta are below:
