I’ve been using the iOS 17 developer beta for a few weeks now, and been meaning to write a roundup of the features I’ve found most useful. I will get around to that, but there’s one which stands out to me – and that’s StandBy.

Apple’s primary intention with this right now is to turn the iPhone into a handy nightstand clock, but this isn’t the only way to use it …

macOS Sonoma Desktop

As device management vendors test macOS Sonoma and iOS 17, IT teams should file bug reports with Apple

We’re heating up on the beta period for Apple’s fall releases as macOS Sonoma, iOS 17, iPadOS 17, and tvOS 17 start on the journey of bug squashing and UI refinements. For IT professionals, this period isn’t a lull period – it’s a time when you should be working through your normal zero-touch deployment workflows to ensure nothing is broken that will stay broken by launch.

iOS 17 and macOS Sonoma to let users edit Cinematic videos with third-party apps

iOS iPhone Cinematic mode videos

With iPhone 13, Apple introduced a new feature called “Cinematic mode,” which applies the same idea as Portrait Mode to videos, resulting in a blurred background similar to the effect achieved by professional cameras. Until now, the only way to edit Cinematic videos is using Apple Photos, iMovie, or Final Cut. But this changes with iOS 17 and macOS Sonoma.

Here’s a small iOS 17 change that had gone unnoticed until now. Via @AppleIntro on Twitter, iOS 17 includes a new speed option for the Haptic Touch setting. This setting controls how long the user has to long-press on the iPhone screen in order for the system gesture action to be committed.

iOS 17 lets users easily change the app used to send messages with Siri

It’s been a while since iOS users have been able to ask Siri to send a message to someone. And while this command uses iMessage or SMS by default, it also works if you specify a compatible third-party app. With iOS 17, Apple is making this even more intuitive with a new option that lets users change which app will be used to send a message through Siri.

iOS 17 beta has no sideloading, but Craig Federighi says Apple might comply with EU

Apple App Store sideloading iOS

Apple has come under scrutiny as governments around the world, especially the European Union, accuse the company of anti-competitive practices because of the App Store and iOS not allowing users to install apps from other sources. A report last year revealed that Apple was working on allowing sideloading with iOS 17, but it didn’t happen.

However, Apple’s vice president of software engineering Craig Federighi has said that the company might comply with the EU in its decisions on sideloading.

Apple’s new ‘Personal Voice’ feature can create a voice that sounds like you or a loved one in just 15 minutes

As part of its preview of iOS 17 accessibility updates coming this year, Apple announced a pair of new features called Live Speech and Personal Voice. Live Speech allows users to type what they want to say and have it be spoken out.

Personal Voice, on the other hand, is a way for people who are at risk of losing their ability to speak to create and save a voice that sounds like them. Apple says it’s designed for people at risk of losing their ability to speak, such as those with a recent diagnosis of ALS.

With the first beta of iOS 17 now available, you can now try out Personal Voice for yourself.
