iPhone 9to5Mac

Introduced in 2007 by Steve Jobs, iPhone is Apple’s flagship iOS device and easily its most popular product around the world. Software wise, it runs iOS and includes a large collection of mobile apps through the App Store.

Since its introduction, Apple has released at least one new phone every single year. In recent years, that has typically been in the fall. iPhones are sold through multiple retail channels including Apple Stores, cellular stores, Best Buy, and other major electronic retailers. iPhones can be bought with a single up front payment, financed through the iPhone Upgrade Program, or financed through a cellular carrier.

Apple’s smartphone has become much more than just a phone since its debut. The iPhone can act as your primary camera, music player, GPS device, email client, mobile banking system, messaging device, movie player, and much more.

NFC symbol on top of a stylized Brazilian flag

Apple Pay and the iPhone’s NFC sensor have long been the subject of disputes around the globe. Last year, the European Commission compelled Apple to grant developers access to the NFC reader, and more recently, the company expanded this access in other regions due to increasing regulatory pressure.

Now, a new national payment system in Brazil has a regulatory body taking an even closer look at the iPhone’s NFC, and it appears the company isn’t willing to budge.

The iPhone gone in 10 years? The case for and against

The iPhone gone in 10 years? The case for and against | Colorful abstract art with a futuristic feel

Apple SVP Eddy Cue yesterday suggested that we might not need an iPhone ten years from now. It echoes a report back in 2019, where the company’s execs were cited saying the same thing – also with a decade-ish time-frame.

Apple is absolutely right to take this possibility seriously. It’s the job of the company’s leadership to think long and hard about future scenarios, and there are four very good reasons why this possibility cannot be ignored …

This Qi2 power bank might be a glimpse at the future of smartphone battery tech

Have you ever purchased a 5,000mAh Magsafe battery bank thinking, “This should fully charge my iPhone or even more because my iPhone battery is smaller”? But then, with real-world use, you only get 50% to 80% charge? This has happened to me on a few occasions. While the mAh measurement of those battery banks is true, Lithium-ion battery tech tends to lose energy through heat, wireless charging inefficiencies, and voltage conversion. But solid state battery tech is here to fix that, and Kuxiu’s S2 has shown me the future.

Feature Request: Apple should offer instant access to overseas eSIMs when traveling

Apple should offer instant access to overseas eSIMs when traveling | Splash screen confirming an eSIM plan is active

If there’s one thing likely to put the damper on any overseas trip, it’s racking up a huge data roaming bill on your iPhone. I once managed to notch up a bill of about $40 in the 15 minutes between switching on my phone after the plane landed and organizing a local data plan while inside the airport terminal.

These days, I have a simple solution to instantly acquiring a local eSIM at a competitive price, but using this on a recent trip made me think how sensible it would be for Apple to make this a standard iPhone feature …

Apple warns iPhone users in 100 countries that they are victims of spyware | Creepy-looking low-key b&w photo of hands typing on a keyboard

Apple has notified iPhone users in 100 countries that their devices have been infected with spyware, implying that it may be NSO’s Pegasus.

The company has warned victims to take it seriously, and to immediately take a number of security actions in response. One of the recipients has shared almost the entire message, the first time I can recall seeing more than a brief excerpt …

Apple’s 20th anniversary iPhone redesign may be pretty expensive, here’s why

Apple is planning a ‘major shake-up’ for the iPhone in 2027, in celebration of the iPhone’s 20th anniversary. While we don’t know too many details about the redesign, we do know one thing: the company wants to utilize a lot more glass.

This special 20th anniversary iPhone model likely would’ve come with a price premium regardless. However, it may come with an even heftier one than usual.

Namely, the White House yesterday said that the exemption, which covers all Apple products, was only a temporary one, lasting 1-2 months. However, there are three reasons why this is exceedingly unlikely to be true …
