iPad takes top spot in 2013 tablet market, but MacBooks lose out to Google-powered Chromebooks

Share-of-Unit-Slaes-US-Comm-Channel

Editor’s note: As noted in the graph above, the numbers in this article refer only to the commercial channel, as NPD does not measure direct sales. Some of the language below has been updated to clarify this point.

A new release from the NPD Group indicates that notebooks running Google’s Chrome OS have gained significant ground in the past year, with Google’s free operating system managing to overtake Apple’s entire lineup of MacBooks for the first time. According to the statistics, Chromebooks outsold Apple’s notebooks in the consumer channel at an over five-to-one margin.

Of course, it should be noted that the numbers presented don’t take built-to-order machines into account, instead relying on sales of pre-configured options, but even with custom orders included the numbers indicate a significant shift in consumer notebook selection. Luckily for Apple, the biggest hit seems to be to Microsoft, whose notebooks lost a significant 8% of the market to Google.

Tweetbot for Mac updated with several much-needed bug fixes

1

Tweetbot for Mac was updated today to version 1.4.1. The new update brings a collection of sorely-needed fixes to some of the biggest bugs affecting users of the previous version, including the inability to see new tweets when they load, problems with multi-monitor setups, and direct messaging issues. It also includes all of the updates to version 1.4, including smooth scrolling on OS X Mavericks, quick-reply from notifications, and more.

The update is available for free to all current users. New users can grab the app for $19.99.

What’s New in Version 1.4.1

– Fixed the issue where you can see “x unread items” but can’t scroll up to see them
– Fixed the issue where direct message images would not load when clicked
– Fixed the issue with some users seeing hangs related to iCloud syncing or playing audio
– Fixed the issue where the main Tweetbot window could move from the secondary to primary monitor after restarting the app

Mac Pros start shipping with delivery date of December 30, demand outstripping supply (again)

Mac-Pro-WWDC-01

The first Mac Pro orders have started shipping, according to reports across Twitter. It seems that for now only off-the-shelf configurations are shipping, while built-to-order machines will ship early next month.

https://twitter.com/metamediact/status/415249229058035712

The Texas-built computer now lists shipping and delivery dates going into February on Apple’s web store, indicating that either the demand for these machines is higher than expected (an unlikely situation, given the price tag), or the supply is having a hard time keeping up with the limited demand.

This isn’t the first time this year Apple has suffered from supply issues, though the continuing pattern seems to indicate that perhaps the company should focus on increasing its supply capabilities in 2014.

Apple-backed consortium reportedly planning to sell off patent portfolio

Rockstar-logo

Rockstar, a consortium backed by Apple, Microsoft, Sony, and other tech giants, is planning to sell off most of its patent portfolio, according to Bloomberg. The group beat Google in a bidding war for these patents, which previously belonged to Nortel, but is now seeking to off-load them—or at least the ones that have served no purpose.

Rockstar does plan to hold on to a few of the key patents, specifically the ones involved in lawsuits against Google and other companies. Several of the patents have already been sold to Spherix Inc. as part of a deal that would include Rockstar sharing in any future financial profits based on the patents, according to the report. Sales of the remaining patents could result in similar arrangements.

Following evasi0n jailbreak release, A4 devices on iOS 6.1.5 also untethered via “p0sixspwn” Cydia package

Site default logo image

jailbreak

Yesterday the iOS jailbreaking community was caught off-guard by the sudden release of an updated evasi0n tool compatible with iOS 7. Now, users with an iPhone 4 or fourth-generation iPod touch on iOS 6.1.3 through 6.1.5—versions previously impervious to the iOS 6 jailbreak—can also get an untethered jailbreak for their devices. This is an especially welcome release for users of the fourth-gneration iPod touch and original iPad, both of which are incompatible with iOS 7.

As you can see from the directions, the actual jailbreaking part takes place in the existing redsn0w application, which has been used to jailbreak iOS 6 and other versions in the past. However, this part of the jailbreak is “tethered,” which means the user must connect to a computer and re-run the software in order to boot it or run many stock apps.

To achieve the “untethered” status and allow reboots with no need to connect to a Mac or PC, users can install a newly-released package from Cydia. The package, dubbed “p0sixspwn,” was created by iH8snowwinocm, and several other veteran jailbreak developers.

Review: Bubble Chat for iPhone is a colorful alternative to Facebook Messenger

A few weeks ago, Facebook updated its Messenger app to match iOS 7’s visual design. Unfortunately, the update is a bit bland, with no real embellishments in terms of UI or animation. This week, a new Facebook chat client for iPhone was released that aims to address those complaints with a colorful interface and slick animations.

That app is Bubble Chat.

Bubble Chat is one of the most creative iOS 7 designs I’ve seen, leveraging the new OS’s physics to animate every transition and movement in the app. By default, most of the interface is blue, but a $.99 in-app purchase allows you to customize the background color for each contact individually or globally. You can also choose a photo from your device to use as the background.

The app has two main views for managing your conversations. The first is a list of your Facebook contacts. The other is a list of recent conversation threads. The contact list makes use of each friend’s photo not only as an avatar next to their name, but also as a background for each row in the list, providing a bit more texture than a standard blue background. The chat list provides a quick look at each thread’s most recent message.

Tapping a contact’s photo from the conversation list or with in a thread brings up a contact-specific settings sheet that allows you to customize the design of that conversation or mute all message notifications from that user. From with a conversation you can send photos and videos, plus custom drawings you can create with a variety of brushes and colors.

Speaking of contact photos, Bubble Chat has a clever trick that detects faces in photo and automatically centers them. No more oddly-cropped profile pictures where an off-center face gets cut off! In my testing, I found that the detection system worked every single time, showcasing my contacts automatically instead of whatever happened to be centered in the photo.

The app supports push notifications for new messages, though they seemed a bit unreliable in my testing. My first message came through the main Facebook app, but not Bubble Chat. After I opened Bubble Chat and viewed the new message, notifications started functioning normally for the most part. A few seemed to show up late or not at all.

Overall, Bubble Chat is a solid app that just needs a little work. Aside from the notification issue, I noticed a few graphical glitches, especially when quickly moving between conversation threads and the chat list. These always resolved themselves within a few seconds, though, so there’s no reason to worry about them right now. My single biggest issue with the app is that autocorrect does not seem to work when typing a message. The developers have informed me that several bug fixes and improvements are being made very soon.

If you’re looking to replace Facebook Messenger with something that has a little more personality, Bubble Chat is a great alternative. You can get it on the App Store for free. As mentioned before, theme customization options are available as a $.99 in-app purchase.

Veedeo for iPhone allows you to create and share custom video clips with animated text, music, and effects

A new app called Veedeo launched on the iOS App Store today that allows you to create video clips with custom text and a blur effect similar to what you see throughout iOS 7’s new design. The short video clips are designed to be shared via social networks like Twitter and Instagram.

The app doesn’t support importing video from your camera roll to edit, though the developers have said this is coming along with support for the front-facing camera soon. The current version of the app requires you to record a 12-second clip (or shorter) directly within the software. You can then add an optional blur effect to the video (with two different blur intensity options available), and select background music from your iTunes library.

Animated text can be added to the clips during creation by selecting one of the app’s built-in templates. Some contain fully pre-written messages like “Have a Merry Christmas” while many of the others have parts that can be customized, such as “Happy Birthday, <your text here>”.

Once you’ve got your video perfected, you can export it to your camera roll to share through iMessage, email, or your social network of choice.

You can grab Veedeo for iPhone right now on the App Store for $.99. It requires an iPhone 4S or newer running iOS 7.

During this year’s WWDC keynote address, Apple surprised pro users with a look at a completely redesigned version of the Mac Pro, a machine many thought had long been abandoned by the company. At the time, the only availability information that was available was an ambiguous “shipping by December,” though Apple recently gave a more specific release date: today.

After about an hour of downtime, the Apple Online Store has come back up with the option to order the latest-generation Mac Pro. The quad-core model starts at $2,999, with a 6-core model available starting at $3,999.

San Francisco district attorney calls on Apple to enable Activation Lock by default on all iPhones

Site default logo image

Activation-Lock-02

When Apple debuted iOS 7 earlier this year, one of the many new features covered at the keynote event was Activation Lock. The feature is an addition to the existing Find My iPhone system that helps recover lost or stolen iOS devices. While Find My iPhone mainly focuses on locating tracking the missing device on a map, Activation Lock is designed to keep thieves from using stolen phones.

George Gascón, San Francisco district attorney, has called on Apple to enable this feature by default, requiring users to opt-out of the service rather than opting in. Gascón cites a recent survey of 313 San Franciscans which revealed that 79% of responding iPhone users had enabled Find My iPhone and Activation Lock.

Watchdog group forces Apple to change Australian refund policy, review two years of possible violations

Site default logo image

Apple-Store-vegas-winter-display-01

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, a business competition watchdog organization, has forced Apple to make modifications to its refund policy in order to comply with consumer protection legislation, reports the Sydney Morning Herald. According to the group, Apple misled customers with regard to what types of refund or repair they were entitled to.

According to the claims, the U.S.-based company did not provide customers with sufficient compensation for faulty devices to comply with Australian law. Now Apple has been forced to re-evaluate its practices and will have to re-examine countless potential violations that took place over the past two years. Failure to comply with the new policy could result in a massive class-action lawsuit against Apple.

Apple to require all new App Store submissions to be “optimized for iOS 7,” built with latest Xcode starting Feb. 1

Screen Shot 2013-12-17 at 7.17.56 PM

Apple has just published a notice to developers on its dev center that all new apps submitted after February 1st, 2014 must be built with the latest version of Xcode 5 and “must be optimized for iOS 7.” Essentially any apps built using old versions of Xcode or possibly even just maintaining an iOS 6-style interface in Apple’s brave new world of software will be rejected from the store.

This goes for updates, too, meaning even the ambiguous “bug fixes and improvements” that seem to be ever-present in the App Store will now require an iOS 7 update just to be published in February.

Apple has just published its Best of 2013 page, highlighting some of the most popular music, movies, TV shows, iOS apps, ebooks, and podcasts from the past year. In the music section, Lorde’s “Royals” took the pick for Song of the Year, while Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ The Heist was named Best Album.

Gravity, the box office hit starring George Clooney and Sandra Bullock, was named Movie of the Year. Despite the confusion it caused when its final season was broken into two separate purchases earlier this year, Breaking Bad was Apple’s pick for Show of the Year.

Apple kicks off “12 Days of Gifts” early with a free single from Lorde

Last week Apple released the 12 Days of Gifts app on iTunes. The app is an annual tradition for Apple in many countries, and this year U.S. customers can participate for the first time. Starting on December 26th, users can open the app each day for twelve days to get free content from the iTunes, iBooks and App Stores.

Today, Apple is giving users “a gift to get you started.” Specifically, the gift is a free copy of Lorde’s single “No Better,” which was released only three days ago. The single includes the song “No Better” as well as the music video for the singer’s earlier hit “Royals.” The gift can be claimed through the 12 Days app, but is also currently available for free on iTunes to all users, presumably for today only.

Apple opens Games category in Costa Rican and Qatari App Stores

Screen Shot 2013-12-12 at 9.37.27 PMEarlier this year Apple finally allowed apps in the Games category to appear on the South African App Store. Today the company has sent out an email to developers notifying them that the same change has been made in Costa Rica and Qatar. App developers don’t have to do anything to enable their apps for sale in those stores as long as the apps have been cleared for sale in those countries.

If developers have not set their apps to be available in those countries, they’ll need to make that change before their games are available in those stores.

Apple updates Remote app with the ability to control iTunes Radio

Apple has updated its Remote application for iOS with the ability to control iTunes Radio playing on a user’s computer. Previously the app could only control playback of music that was stored locally in an iTunes library, but now Mac and PC users will be able to control their streaming stations remotely as well. The feature does not appear to work with Apple TVs running iTunes Radio yet.

The app was recently overhauled for iOS 7 along with Apple’s other iOS software. Remote is free on the iOS App Store.

iPhone 5c goes on sale for just $27 with a two-year agreement this Friday at Wal-Mart

Site default logo image

iPhone-5cUpdate: Best Buy is currently taking $75 off all iPhone 5s models.

Update 2:  Starting today MacMall Retail Stores will offer the iPhone 5c for $19.99 and the iPhone 5s at $119.99.

The holiday deals just keep getting better for Apple fans. Wal-Mart shoppers will be able to get the new iPhone 5c for only $27 with a new two-year contract starting this Friday. The phone typically goes for $99, putting the total discount at $72. Following the 5c’s launch earlier this year, we noted that its higher-end counterpart, the 5s, was outselling it two-to-one. It seems Wal-Mart is quite interested in moving some stock to try to even those numbers out.

Special deals on other Apple devices will be available the same day, including the iPhone 5s at $127 with a contract, a savings of—you guessed it—$72. The retailer is also planning to offer a $50 gift card with the purchase of a new iPad mini. And of course no Apple sale would be complete without discounted iTunes gift cards. A $30 card will only set you back $25 during the sale.

Expansion of Apple Store Stonestown, San Francisco set for December 14th

Screen Shot 2013-12-10 at 7.17.37 PM

Apple has announced that the expansion of its Stonestown retail store in San Francisco will be open to the public on December 14th. The expanded store will open at 8 AM. This announcement comes less than a day after the announcement of a new Apple retail store in Dusseldorf, Germany, which is set to open on the same day.

Ifo Apple Store notes that this expansion will put the store at 7,690 square feet—more than double the size of the existing space—allowing more room for customer training that the current store does not have. The expanded store will occupy two adjacent spaces previously held by other retailers. Part of a third space is also being added to the store, though the rest of that space will remain unused.

Apple has plans to open thirty new retail stores worldwide in the coming year, which will bring the total number of stores to around 448, with stores in fourteen countries and counting. The company also plans to expand twenty of its existing locations.

Update: Apple is also re-opening an expanded store at the Rosedale Center in Roseville, Minnesota.
