See All Stories

AirPods offers a cord-free wireless audio experience with up to 5 hours of battery life. They are rechargeable through the included case that get you up to 24 hours on a single charge. AirPods 2 and AirPods Pro support wireless (Qi) charging, Hey Siri, and include the H1 chip.

Apple’s truly wireless wireless and cord-free earbuds now with Qi support

AirPods 1 Features

AirPods are Apple’s wireless, cord-free in-ear headphones, and were unveiled alongside the iPhone 7 on September 7, 2016. Priced at $159 they were originally announced to be available in late October, 2016, but were delayed until December 13.

They have a very similar form-factor to the company’s wired EarPods, with the obvious omission of a cable and the addition of Bluetooth connectivity. Despite this, early reports suggest that they are better at staying in your ears.

They offer Apple’s latest wireless pairing system, based on the W1 chip. They pair instantly, and that pairing propagates across all your Apple devices via iCloud. The secret sauce behind the new pairing system turned out to be all in the W1 chip in the headphones themselves, so it works with Bluetooth LE devices all the way back to the iPhone 5.

AirPods 2 Features

In March of 2019, Apple released AirPods 2. The new version is available for $199 with the wireless charging case, or available with the standard case for $159. Existing version 1 owners can purchase the wireless charging case separately for $79.

Version 2 moved away from the W1 chip to the new H1 chip to deliver up to 50 percent more talk time compared to the first generation. The H1 should also speed up switching between devices, with Apple saying version 2 should now connect two times faster. Version 2 also includes ‘Hey Siri’ support as well.

AirPods Pro

In October 2019, Apple announced AirPods Pro. The Pro model features “Active Noise Cancellation and superior, immersive sound in an all-new lightweight, in-ear design.” The new in-ear design of the Pro model makes for better noise cancellation. Apple says that the Pro headphones are sweat and water-resistant rated for IPX4. The box includes three different sizes of ear tips, which should make them relatively versatile.

There are five major features that the Pro model has have that Version 2 don’t:

  • Active noise cancellation
  • Audio Transparency mode
  • IPX4 water/sweat resistance
  • Adaptive EQ
  • In-ear design with three sets of tips

Apple offering AirPods battery replacements for free under warranty, $49 without

Site default logo image

Apple products may last a long time, but as we know, the batteries do not. For Macs, Apple provides a handy way to determine the battery’s cycle count, but for a product like the AirPods, that may not be possible. This means that when your AirPods batteries eventually degrade to a noticeable degree, you’ll have to get them replaced. Apple has recently updated their iPhone Service Pricing page with details on the AirPods’ battery replacement pricing, but there is still some clarity to be had in how it all works.

[UPDATE: One day layer, AirPods are now estimated to ship in 6 weeks. Resellers and retail stores may be your best bet.]

After being delayed for just over a month, Apple’s new AirPods became available to purchase for the first time today with deliveries estimated for as early as Monday. Customers who didn’t order during the initial hour likely won’t see AirPods until 2017 as shipping estimates have already climbed to 4 weeks out. Update: As expected, AirPods stock is limited. An hour later, the product is no longer available for Christmas delivery. In the US, delivery estimates are now quoting December 29th availability. eBay is already flooded with scalpers selling AirPods at inflated prices.

The AirPods are now available to buy from Apple’s Online Store, with delivery before Christmas. You can buy AirPods from Apple and Best Buy (delivery in 2017).

After many delays, Apple’s truly-wireless headphones are finally on sale which are the company’s preferred solution to the wireless audio future heralded by the iPhone 7. Quantities are likely to be limited so get in quick if you want to secure a pair before Christmas Day.

Comment: AirPods delay highlights risk of Apple pre-announcing products, and it’s hardly the first time

Site default logo image

It’s clear at this point that something totally unexpected has botched the launch of AirPods, Apple’s first truly wireless earphones. Apple pre-announced AirPods in September alongside the iPhone 7 (the first model without a headphone jack) and promised a launch in late October.

Then the end of October rolled around and Apple declared “we need a little more time before AirPods are ready for our customers” which to me suggested a mid to late November release. Now it seems totally possible that AirPods could be held back until January or later.

Even if AirPods were released right now, the delayed launch has already highlighted the risk of Apple pre-announcing new products. There are benefits to this move that play well when it works out, but for Apple, the risk is high and can often backfire as we’ve seen before…

WSJ: AirPods delay may be due to handling dual Bluetooth connectivity, performance

Site default logo image

There are only a few weeks left in the year and we haven’t received an update on when Apple’s new wireless AirPods will be available to purchase. Originally planned for release in late October, Apple said it needed “a little more time” before the totally wireless Bluetooth earphones were ready for customers just days before that deadline arrived. While we have not received any specific explanation for the delay, a new report highlighting the situation may offer some details…

Major French retail chain claims AirPods will be available on November 30

Site default logo image

Major French electronics retail chain FNAC is claiming that it will have AirPods in stock on November 30, and is taking pre-orders for delivery on this date, notes Mac4Ever.

Although the preorder page specifies only November, the order confirmation (seen above) specifies the end of the month in two separate places.

Whether this is based on solid information or just another guess is unclear. At this point, we’ve heard plenty of conflicting reports about when the long-delayed wireless headphones will finally go on sale …

Latest AirPods release date hint expects launch next month for Apple’s wireless earphones

Site default logo image

Apple’s new AirPods appear to take totally wireless earphones one step further than any competitor so far, but we can’t be too sure just yet because of the delayed release and impending launch. AirPods were originally set to release in late October, then Apple said it needed ‘a little more time’ to ensure they’re ready for customers.

We’re now moving past the iPhone 7 launch and into the holiday shopping season with no set launch date for AirPods, but there are a few guesses at just when we should expect to buy Apple’s new wireless earbuds …

Apple patent granted for ‘Sports EarPods’ with biometrics and gesture-based controls

Apple’s delayed wireless AirPods may not be the only new earphones the company has in the works. A patent originally dating back to 2008 but only published today describes what seems a logical next step for a company increasingly focused on health and fitness: a sports earphone.

The patent describes two types of functionality, one geared to gathering biometric data to provide fitness data, the other allowing gesture-based control of an iPhone …

Review: Can the Erato Apollo 7 fill the wireless earbud void before Apple’s AirPods?

Site default logo image

I discovered the Erato Apollo 7 a few months ago during its Kickstarter campaign and nearly immediately knew it would be a pair of earbuds that could fit into my life nicely. It really looked like the first pair of true wireless earbuds that included all the functionality I wanted, without sacrificing any distinct feature. With the AirPods being delayed potentially as far out as January, is there a possibility that the Erato Apollo 7 ($299) is ready to fill the void that Apple left with the iPhone 7?

Chinese supply chain sources report Apple AirPods not shipping until January 2017

Apple initially unveiled the AirPods, Apple’s truly-wireless earbuds, alongside the iPhone 7 in September with the intention to ship in late October. However, the company delayed the launch at the last minute citing it needing extra time to finish up the product.

A new availability date was not given as part of Apple’s official statement, however a report from Economic Daily News (via Digitimes) is suggesting it will be a while, with suppliers not expecting AirPods to begin shipping until next year, in January 2017.

As we await Apple’s AirPods, these are the best wireless cord-free earbuds available

Apple delayed the release of its new truly wireless earbuds called AirPods that it originally planned on launching in late October. It’s disappointing for some who wanted to use them with their new iPhone 7 that launched back in September. But what does the competition look like?

With the AirPods originally expected to launch sometime this month, right around the time of Apple’s MacBook Pro event and Apple Watch Nike+ launch last week, a lot of accessory makers have been planning launches to time and compete with Apple’s new wireless earbuds. Just this week a few new products launched, including Michigan-based Sol Republic’s first cord-free product called ‘Amps Air’, and today Best Buy is launching new $249 Skybuds that claim to offer 24 hours battery with an included charging case and improved connectivity.

If you just can’t wait for the AirPods, or want to check out the competition and see how Apple’s earbuds compare, these are the alternatives…

Comment: Sure, AirPods delay is disappointing, but a premature release would have way worse effects

Site default logo image

Earlier today, Apple somewhat surprisingly announced that its truly wireless AirPods won’t be available this month like it had originally announced. This announcement was a bit out of character for Apple, as the company admitted that the product simply isn’t ready for primetime just yet. While on the surface it seems like bad news for Apple that the AirPods are delayed, it was likely a smart move by the company for the long run…

Staggering 12% of US consumers claim they will buy Apple’s AirPods; would be $3B revenue

A survey of U.S. consumers by Bank of America Merrill Lynch found that a staggering 12% of the population was planning to buy Apple’s new wireless AirPods when they go on sale next month. That would represent total revenue of $3B, reports Business Insider.

Purchase intention surveys tend to be optimistic, it being easier to say you’ll buy something than actually going out and handing over the $159, but even for intenders, that’s a huge number …

Hands-on: Beats Solo3 Wireless — the first available headphones featuring Apple’s new W1 chip [Video]

Site default logo image

Apple made a big, polarizing splash when it announced its new wireless AirPods during last week’s iPhone 7 keynote. The AirPods, which are completely devoid of any wires, were met with plenty of mixed reactions online. Whether or not you agree with the design of the AirPods is one thing, but the new W1 wireless chip, Apple’s first, is promising to bring a better overall wireless audio experience to the masses.

Unfortunately, the AirPods don’t ship until late October, so unless you’re among the few who received early review units, you’ll have to wait until the fall before you can experience the $159 wireless earphones for yourself. That said, you can still take Apple’s new wireless W1 chip for a spin, arguably the most important component of its AirPods, anyway.

The W1 wireless chip is not only embedded in Apple’s AirPods, you’ll find the same chip tucked away in several pairs of new Beats-branded headphones as well. The just-released Beats Solo3 On-Ear Wireless Headphones, for instance, have the distinction of being the first product to hit the market with a W1 chip nestled inside. As such, we felt that it was only right to provide you with a hands-on look at this compelling new wireless headphone option.

Concept image shows gorgeous Jet Black AirPods and asks the obvious question … [Poll]

One of our favorite designers, Martin Hajek, has been busy again, this time showing what Apple’s new AirPods would look like in the Jet Black finish used for the iPhone 7.

He poses the obvious question: why did this not happen? Given the huge popularity of the Jet Black finish, despite concerns about scratches, it would have seemed an obvious move to offer the color as an option. Especially for a product far less likely to be subject to scratches, living in your ears when in use and the case when not …

AirPods review roundup: weird looks, okay sound, really clever tech

With mixed reviews of the iPhone 7, we took a look to see whether the same was true of Apple’s highest-tech headphones, the all-new wireless AirPods with their ultra-slick pairing system facilitated by the W1 chip.

Here, however, we found greater agreement. Everyone was impressed by the instant pairing and by the intelligence in the AirPods – like auto-pausing when you remove them from your ear. Most people seem to agree that the sound quality is distinctly average but acceptable to most. And there’s also widespread agreement that the look is definitely on the dorky side …
