The original Apple Watch (later called Series 0) was released on April 24, 2015, after years of rumors. While there was a lot of initial hype around it, the third-party watchOS apps were slow to launch due to API limitations. Native apps were available in watchOS 2. The original watch came in 38mm and 42mm sizes.

The Series 2 Watch was released on September 16th, 2016 along with a Series 1 Watch. The Series 2 included the S2 chip, built-in GPS, and water-proof construction. The Series 1 included the S2, but lacked GPS and waterproofing.

The Series 3 Watch was released on September 22, 2017, and it included an LTE option and the S3 chip. The Series 4 Watch was released on September 21, 2018. New hardware included the S4 Chip, Electrical heart sensor w/ ECG app, and larger display (40mm and 44mm sizes).

Apple Watch Series 5 was announced during Apple’s fall event on September 10, 2019. Customers were able to purchase the device later that day, and it was released on September 20. The headline feature for this model was the wearable’s always-on display. The new display always shows the time and complications and is also the first from the company to include a built-in compass.

Apple launched international emergency services to every cellular model. Series 5 also brought back ceramic white, and new natural brush and space black titanium models.

You WON’T need an appointment to try on Apple Watch in retail stores (but expect to wait)

Site default logo image

How will Apple Watch be displayed in retail stores next month? Apple’s own “try on by appointment” language led many people to believe appointments would be required to actually go hands-on with Watches before making a purchase. 9to5Mac has confirmed, however, that try on appointments won’t be necessary and that retail staff plan to accommodate walk-in customers wishing to try on an Apple Watch.

AAPL’s performance & prospects make it a paradoxically difficult investment, say fund managers

Site default logo image

You might not think a stock outperforming the market and considered to have good future prospects would pose a problem for investors, but Reuters reports that it can prove challenging for fund managers.

The issue is that most diversified funds have rules or guidelines that state they shouldn’t hold more than 5-10% of their funds in any one stock. This, fund managers say, can pose three problems. First, there’s the obvious one: they may want to buy more of it than their own rules allow …

Apple drops requirement for Watch app submissions to need screenshots taken on a physical device

Site default logo image

Apple had been confusing many Apple Watch app developers due to some confusing wording in the developer documentation for iTunes Connect, pictured above. The wording indicated that app submissions, including a Watch app, would require at least one screenshot of their app taken on an Apple Watch itself.

However, this was confusing as it was therefore impossible for developers to submit Watch extensions without owning an Apple Watch themselves. This caused some concern that there would be very few third-party apps on day one of the Watch launch (April 24th) as most developers would not get access to hardware aside from the select partners Apple worked with in Cupertino.

Final Apple Watch Companion app for iPhone interface revealed [Gallery]

Site default logo image

Early this year, we posted the first screenshots and details of an early version of the Apple Watch Companion application for the iPhone. Now that the application is bundled into iOS 8.2, developer Hamza Sood has activated the Apple Watch Settings portion and has shared a view of screenshots. As can be seen in the full gallery below, the interface is dark black, like the Activity app for fitness revealed yesterday, and includes all of the functionality we detailed earlier. Some interesting new settings, however, were revealed today, such as one for assigning a left or right wrist to the Watch, Handoff support, Haptic Strength, and volume levels. The Apple Watch will be released on April 24th, with pre-orders beginning on April 10th.

When the Apple Watch goes on display next month ahead of its launch, it won’t just be available to preview in Apple Stores. The company shared on Monday that three cities around the world — namely Paris, Tokyo, and London — will present the Watch outside of Apple’s own retail stores where people can preview and try on the new wearable. Newly captured photos now show early construction at one of those venues, revealing just how big the presentation area will be.

Smartwatches like the Apple Watch are worse for driver distraction than smartphones, shows UK safety tests

UK safety tests have shown that using a smartwatch while driving is more dangerous than using a smartphone, reports the Huffington Post.

The Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) in Wokingham, Berks showed that a driver reading a message on an Apple Watch would take 2.52 seconds to react to an emergency manoeuvre, whereas a driver talking to another passenger would react in 0.9 seconds. Reading on an Apple Watch was even found to be more distracting than using a handheld mobile (1.85 second delay).

While the piece refers to the Apple Watch, the TRL told me that the tests were conducted with an unspecified smartwatch, and was not a full-scale study, but earlier studies have shown that even talking with someone handsfree is more distracting that holding a conversation with someone in the car.

Developer unlocks Activity app inside iOS 8.2, appears when an Apple Watch is paired to iPhone

Site default logo image

Developer Hamza Sood has done some digging inside the public iOS 8.2 build that was distributed to users on Monday. Although the Apple Watch is included by default as stock app (undeletable, whether you like it or not), the OS also includes an Activity app. Although it was previously known that the app existed, Apple has not shared details about what features the app has or even how you installed onto your phone.

Sood claims that the Activity app automatically appears on your Home Screen, once an Apple Watch is paired to the iPhone. After setup of the Activity features on the Watch itself, the app unlocks.

Look how much sleeker Apple Watch is compared to Android Wear watches

From 9to5Google:

The Apple Watch was once again shown off at Apple’s “Spring Forward” event on Monday, and many have been left wondering how the device compares to the Android Wear devices currently on the market. Technology has surely evolved a bit since the G Watch was announced, but how much have things changed?

There are several differences between the two platforms, but one that has now been brought to light is the device’s physical dimensions. Looking at Apple’s renders and images makes the device look big, but comparing its actual dimensions to Android Wear devices does the opposite. It’s tiny compared to most of what’s available today.

Opinion: Why I think the Apple Watch marketing so far is mediocre

Site default logo image

In the run up to the Spring Forward event, many people were expecting to see a lengthy exposition of the Apple Watch, to clarify confusion and offer a clean explanation as to how this product plays an essential role in people’s lives. What transpired was not that, at all. Apple’s event was a grab-bag procession of various product announcements, from Mac to Apple TV, concluding with a review of Watch features alongside pricing and availability details.

It did not help consolidate the vision for the Watch. Apple’s messaging for this product is almost the same as it was back in September. The company has not succinctly provided a reason for the Watch’s existence.

That’s not to say it doesn’t have one. I think the Watch is a great product with a good sales trajectory ahead of it, especially the $349 Sport models. The marketing aspects are lacking, so far. The Watch does not have clearly defined themes. Apple’s attempts at promoting three ‘tentpole’ use cases have, in my view, been conveyed poorly.

Apple removing Jawbone and Nike fitness bands from retail stores ahead of Apple Watch launch

Ahead of the April 24th launch of its first wearable, Apple has started removing competing health and fitness products from its retail stores. Re/code reports that the company is pulling fitness bands from Nike and Jawbone from its shelves.

It’s not the first time Apple has stopped selling a product to avoid competition. Last year the retailer removed Bose products from its stores after the NFL banned Apple-owned Beats headphones from appearing on camera to accommodate a Bose sponsorship deal, and Bose filed a lawsuit against Beats.

Bose’s products eventually reappeared in Apple Stores. Whether Jawbone and Nike will have similar luck once the Apple Watch has picked up some sales is unknown, but unlikely.

Apple SVP Jony Ive and Marc Newson to open Condé Nast International Luxury Conference in April

Site default logo image

Apple’s SVP of Design Jony Ive and ‘part-time’ employee Marc Newson will open Condé Naste’s ‘International Luxury Conference’ in April. The pair will be interviewed by Vogue’s international media editor Suzy Menkes. The set topic is the ’21st century definition of luxury and their collaborative work to date’.

The conference will run from April 22nd to 23rd, just before the Apple Watch is released to the general public. No doubt the Watch will be a key talking point at the conference, with both Ive and Newson playing crucial roles in its development. Although Newson was only confirmed to be working for Apple in September, it has transpired that he has been contributing to the Watch project for years.

Twelve South’s latest HiRise dock accommodates Apple Watch

From 9to5Toys.com:

As the noise begins to die down from Monday’s Apple Watch announcement, we’re seeing a number of accessory makers reveal solutions for charging and storing the timepiece. Twelve South has announced its latest HiRise iteration, designed specifically for docking Apple Watch.

Much like previous models from Twelve South, the HiRise for Apple Watch elevates the device to a level that makes all buttons accessible for easier manipulation. It has a built-in cord management solution to keep the MagSafe charger in place, snaking through the aluminum base while keeping it out of sight.

The HiRise for Apple Watch uses both the magnetic pull of the MagSafe charger and a small cutout to hold the device in place. Additionally, that same magnet will also keep your watch still even when a band is not present. It has silicone accents throughout the dock, which are designed to offer scratch protection. It also has a non-slip rubber base for keeping the HiRise in place while interacting with the device. This dock is slated to ship in two colors: silver and black.

At $49.99, the Twelve South’s HiRise for Apple Watch offers a docking solution that falls in line with the pricing we’d expect for this type of solution. Availability has yet to be released, but interested consumers can sign up for an alert via the HiRise product page for when it comes to market.

KGI: Apple Watch with new casing materials likely arriving in Q4 this year

Site default logo image

The latest from KGI Research’s Ming-Chi Kuo, one analyst with quite a solid track record on Apple forecasts, predicts Apple will likely release an Apple Watch with new casing materials by the fourth quarter of this year. KGI expects Apple will introduce 1-3 new versions of Apple Watch featuring casing materials other than the aluminium, stainless steel, and 18k gold options its launching next month. From the report:

Chinese clone-makers ramp up the fake Apple Watches including Gold Edition, pricing from $40 to $80

We started seeing Apple Watch knockoffs at CES, but now that Apple has given more details about the real thing, the Chinese clone-makers appear to be really ramping up their efforts.

The Telegraph notes that companies offering the fakes are quite shameless about it, using the Apple Watch name and logo, and some of them copying the design details all the way down to the four sensors on the back of the watch. You almost have to admire the sheer gall of a company which advertises an “iWatch” using the slogan “Knockoff Apple watches have hit the market!” …

While some of the fakes look undeniably cheap, others look pretty convincing–at least in render form. GizChina reports that the Zeaplus Watch–shown at the top, and not yet available for sale–will be available in silver, gray and (fake) gold, and will feature a heart-rate monitor as well as supporting iOS notifications.

Business Insider found fakes from just 259 Yuan–a little over $40. Just to add to the confusion, some of the vendors are apparently offering genuine watches before they go on sale, and at knockdown prices, but as the BBC’s Leo Kelion notes, what they are actually advertising in the small-print is the ability to put down a deposit on that date. Whether you’ll actually get the real thing if you do is anyone’s guess.

Here’s a gallery of just some of the listings on Chinese ecommerce site Taobao.

Still undecided about an Apple Watch? Startup offers ‘try before you buy’ rental

Site default logo image

The Apple Watch is not a cheap purchase, and with only 60% of our readers planning to buy one, it’s clear that many of you are not yet convinced you see a role for it. (I have to say I was even less convinced after checking out the size on my wrist in the Apple Store app–even the 42mm model looks tiny.)

My own plan, as a smartwatch skeptic, is to check that Apple’s 14-day return policy applies to the watch before buying one to try out for a week, fully expecting to return it. But if you don’t want to lay out that kind of cash even temporarily, a startup called Lumoid is offering Apple Watch rentals starting at $45 a week …

Apple Stores preparing new Reserve and Pickup system for Watch launch on April 24

Site default logo image

Apple is preparing a new Reserve and Pickup system at its retail stores that will roll out in time for the Watch launch on April 24th, according to sources. The Reserve and Pickup system for the Apple Watch will differ from the existing Personal Pickup system for other products, which allows customers to fully purchase items online before picking them up at Apple retail locations. The new system will allow potential Watch customers to reserve a desired case and band combination online, then try the specific Watch in-store before completing the purchase.

You can now compare Apple Watch 38mm and 42mm actual sizes right on your iPhone

Site default logo image

Apple Watch Space Black Stainless Steel, 38mm & 42mm

When the Apple Watch becomes available for pre-order on April 10th next month, customers will have to decide between two different sizes: 38mm and 42mm. Deciding between the two sizes may be difficult if you want to buy one before they begin shipping on April 24th, so the Watch will go on display at Apple Stores two weeks ahead of its launch.

You might not be able to visit a crowded Apple Store just to make that decision, and Apple (mostly) has that covered too. Buried inside the Apple Store app for iPhone is an actual size comparison for each case size. The mockup shows the casing of the Apple Watch with the home screen icons displayed, and you can tap to toggle between the smaller and larger cases.

Opinion: Apple’s Spring Forward event signals huge changes ahead for Mac, iPad, Apple TV + Apple itself

Although many people expected that Apple’s Spring Forward event would mostly focus on the Apple Watch, more than half of the event — notably, the first part — covered other topics. Collectively, there were so many interesting developments that their individual significance was somewhat lost, particularly given that long-awaited Watch pricing news wrapped up the event.

That’s why I wanted to reconsider what Spring Forward revealed about some of Apple’s non-Watch products. Some of the announcements signal that big changes are ahead for Apple’s Mac, iPad, and Apple TV product lines, as well as Apple itself. Read on for my thoughts, and add yours to the comments section below…

Swiss watchmakers offer mix of deep concern, optimism after Apple Watch pricing reveal

Site default logo image

Swiss watchmakers are once again weighing in on how Apple Watch might impact the Swiss watch industry after Apple yesterday revealed pricing and availability for its three Watch collections. By confirming that its 18k gold models will range from $10,000-$17,000, Apple signaled that it isn’t content to sell into the $350 – $1,000 market where the aluminum Sport and stainless steel Watch models sit; it’s also aiming at the premium luxury watch market. However, it’s the lower end of Apple’s collection that Swiss watchmakers are really worried about.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Swatch co-inventor Elmar Mock says he thinks “Apple will succeed quickly” and predicted that an Ice Age is coming for Swiss watchmakers selling into the $500-$1,000 market. “Anything in the price range of 500 francs to 1,000 francs [US$500-$1,000] is really in danger,” said Mock, speaking from Biel, Switzerland. “I do expect an Ice Age coming toward us.” Mock appears to agree with a reported quote from Apple’s Jonathan Ive that “Switzerland is in trouble,” and differs from current Swatch CEO Nick Hayek, who is aggressively targeting the Apple Watch with Swatch-branded smartwatches

Apple Watch includes 8 GB of storage, allows 2 GB of music and 75 MB of photos

Site default logo image

In our report last week, we reported that internal models of the Apple Watch included 8 GB of storage. We have now confirmed with the company that the shipping units do indeed ship with an 8 GB storage capacity. However, there are some important limitations.

As a user, you are only allowed to use a subsection of that total space for certain types of data. As confirmed with Apple, users are only allowed to store up to 2 GB of music on the Watch and up to 75 MB of photos for the Photos app. Note that all three collections — Sport, Watch and Edition — feature the same 8 GB memory capacity.
