Daft Punk’s new ‘Random Access Memories’ album now available to stream on iTunes

Low quality and fake versions of the much anticipated new album from electronic music super group Daft Punk have been leaking online for weeks now, but today we get our first official, high quality stream of the album through a free preview being offered on iTunes.

iTunes is currently streaming the full 74-minute album, ~~but the stream appears be limited to users in the US~~ and is now going live for iTunes users around the world. Random Access Memories is available to preorder through iTunes now and is expected to be released on May 21st.

Twitterrific 5 iOS app gets Readability, Droplr support, improved notifications, more

The Twitterrific 5 for Twitter iOS app has been updated today to version 5.2.2 with a number of new features and enhancements. Among them, the popular iOS Twitter client gets support for the Readability bookmarking service, Droplr as a new image service, and a few welcomed performance enhancements such as Indicators in timeline tabs that “are updated as tweets are read” and updating read/unread notifications for tweet timestamps as you scroll.

Groupon launches POS app to expand payments service for merchants to iPad

Update, Tues, May 14: It looks like the Groupon POS was launched prematurely and has now been pulled from the App Store. However, today Groupon appears to have rolled out the app as the new Breadcrumb POS app that will now be the face of its payments service for merchants. The old Breadcrumb app, which Groupon acquired last year, will now be called “Breadcrumb Pro”.

It appears Groupon is today launching a mobile payments app dubbed “Groupon POS” that will rival Square’s Register app and allow merchants to accept and manage payments directly from an iPad. The company has yet to make an official announcement but the app is already live on the App Store here.

Last year Groupon launched a similar app for iPhone called Groupon Merchants alongside its Groupon Payments service that allows business owners to accept payments through a credit card reader available for iOS devices.

The new Groupon POS app appears to be a scaled back version of the Breadcrumb POS app that the company acquired last year with the iTunes page noting that it best suited “for a wide variety of merchants from cafes and delis, to salons, spas, and florists.”

The iTunes page also says the app will work “with an optional cash drawer and printer,” although its unclear if Groupon plans to sell the hardware directly to customers like Square recently started doing with its business in a box offer.

Flipboard updated with new profile pages, ‘Friends’ category, SMS sharing, improved Google Reader navigation, more

A big update today for the Flipboard app for iPhone and iPad brings new profile pages that will allow content creators to get info on their “readership and curation activity,” a new Friends category in the Content Guide, improved sharing options including SMS, and the ability to save to your camera roll by tapping on an image.

The updated app, version 2.0.2, also includes “Improved navigation for Google Reader RSS folder,” making it easier for those making the switch from Google Reader to find their content.

Disney’s ABC to livestream all programming to iOS devices starting this week

Big news from the New York Times this evening. ABC, a subsidiary of the Walt Disney Company, will begin streaming live content to iOS devices later this week in Philadelphia and New York City using a new button on their app called ‘live’. Users will be able to live stream all the programming from ABC’s local stations there, ‘the first time that any major broadcaster has turned on such a technology.’

For the first six weeks the service will be free to anyone with an iOS device according to GigaOM. Before you go grabbing the scissors to cut that cable cord, be warned that the live stream will eventually be available only to paying subscribers of cable and satellite providers, even though the stations’ signals are available free over the public airwaves.

ABC, a unit of the Walt Disney Company, said the live stream would be available in the other six cities where it owns stations sometime this summer. It is also in talks with the companies that own ABC’s more than 200 affiliates to make the “live” button work in their markets.

Also, not all shows have beencleared for streaming so there might be some discrepancies between the live feeds and the stream. The news comes as a service called Aereo (which we’ve reviewed) is place shifting broadcast signals to the internet, making live channels available to portable device owners.

Amazon launches Cloud Drive Photos app for iPhone

Amazon today released an iPhone version of its Amazon Cloud Drive Photos mobile app that it originally launched on Android only back in November. Amazon;’s Cloud Drive Photos app for iPhone, like the Android version, will allow users to back up and view photos to their Amazon Cloud Drive accounts. Up until today, iOS device users have only had access to Amazon’s Cloud Player app for streaming music stored in an Amazon cloud account.

The app provides everything a user might need to ditch Apple’s less than perfect iCloud Photostream feature, including the ability to automatically save photos taken on your iPhone to Cloud Drive, access your entire Cloud Drive photo collection from any device, and easily share through social networks.

Adobe says it’s considering a photographer’s bundle for Creative Cloud

Adobe’s unveiling of its latest updates to Creative Cloud earlier this week came with the announcement it will only support Creative Cloud members for future updates, effectively dropping support for customers of its boxed CS6 suite and below apart from security updates and some bug fixes. Adobe has since taken to its Photoshop blog to respond to some of the questions regarding its new CC branded suite of apps and specifically the $20/per month Photoshop users will be forced to pay if they don’t want a full Creative Cloud membership.

While clarifying that single-app memberships for Photoshop will allow users to purchase Lightroom with a perpetual software license separately, the post explained it’s currently offering a special introductory price of $9.99 per month for users of CS3 and up until July 31st. That will let you get a single-app Photoshop license for $10 a month for the first year.

Adobe also confirmed it is considering a photographer’s bundle or “photography cloud solution” that would presumably include various photo related apps at a special price through Creative Cloud:

Netflix iOS app updated with auto-play episodes for TV shows, movie recommendations & an enhanced second screen experience

Update: Netflix clarified in a post on its blog that the new auto-play features have rolled out only for the iPad app.

Netflix has updated its iOS app today with new features that brings movie recommendations and a new auto-play feature for TV shows, among other improvements, to iPhone and iPad.

Version 4.1 of the Netflix app now includes and auto-play feature for TV shows that will automatically start the next episode of a season after the last episode ends, a feature that Netflix has included in its apps on other devices. Another new feature displays movie suggestions with three of the best recommendations based on your viewing habits directly after watching a movie.

Apple expands 3D Flyover coverage in Maps to Paris, France and surrounding areas

Apple has steadily been making improvements to its Maps data following a controversial launch. Last year Apple pushed out major updates to its 3D Maps coverage, adding a number of new cities in the US, UK, France, and Canada, while just last March it quietly pushed out some big improvements to Maps data in Japan. Today our friends over at igen.fr point out that Apple has just pushed out another big update to its 3D Flyover mode, this time bringing new content to more locations across France. Some of the new coverage areas include Paris, Versailles, Aulnay-sous-Bois, Disneyland Paris and to The Hay-les-Roses. Currently, Apple only lists support for 3D building coverage for Lyon, France.

We can’t be sure that France is the only location to get new 3D Maps data today, so let us know in the comments if you notice any additions in your city.

In somewhat related Maps news, TechCrunch has confirmed earlier reports coming from Israeli publication Calcalist that Facebook is currently in discussions with mapping company Waze to acquire the company for close to $1 billion. You might recall that Apple is currently using Waze data in its Maps application and for a brief while was rumored to be in talks to acquire the company. Apple could presumably replace Waze’s free crowd-sourced map data with another Maps provider that offers similar data, but it’s unclear at this point how important Waze is as a Maps source or if an acquisition might affect Apple’s Maps app.

Facebook Pages Manager for iOS rebuilt for speed, gains emojis, photo filters, and stickers

Facebook has updated its Pages Manager application for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch by re-building the core of the app. By re-writing the app for speed, the application is now faster for scrolling through page timelines, loading photographs, and more. Facebook previously re-built its other iOS apps for speed, shunning web-based technologies and using more native Objective-C code.

Facebook Page Manager is an app that makes the management of Facebook Pages easy on-the-go. The application originally launched approximately one year ago, and it also includes helpful analytics information for Page owners.

Today’s update also brings improvements to photo uploads such as filter and auto-enhance support.

Facebook’s Stickers and emojis are now accessible for use in messages from this app as well.

Of course, this update should come as little surprise as Linkedin acquired Pulse last month for $90 million. Additionally, the new update includes sharing to the Evernote service.

App.net launches ‘Passport’ app for iPhone to manage accounts, find browsing clients, sign up for free

New Twitter-like social network App.net has launched an iPhone and iPod touch app called “Passport.” The application serves as a simple way to manage App.net accounts, edit your profile, and find and follow other App.net users. Importantly, the “Passport” app does not serve as a browsing client for an App.net feed, but rather as an app primarily focused on finding third-party App.net clients.

Notably, the app allows you to create a free account. Previously, to get a free account, users needed to have been invited by an existing user.

MiniPlayer jailbreak tweak updated with brand-new design

Fans of the iTunes 11 mini-player will be excited for the newest version of the jailbreak tweak MiniPlayer. The 2.0 update brings a newly-redesigned interface that better matches the iTunes version, as well as the ability to dock it on either side of the screen. The docked player can be moved up or down the screen as needed to keep it out of the way of whatever app you’re using.

MiniPlayer has a few settings that allow you to hide it on the lockscreen, whenenver the music is paused, or by triggering an Activator action. Tapping the album artwork brings up whichever app is currently playing music (it works with any background audio app), and tapping the metadata of the song brings up playback controls.

MiniPlayer 2.0 is a free update for existing users, or a $1.99 purchase for new users on the BigBoss repo.

Bad Piggies for iOS updated with 15 new levels, ability to record & share in-game tricks

Rovio has updated its popular Bad Piggies title for iPhone today with a ton of new content including 15 new levels, a new feature that lets users record and share tricks, an all-new sandbox, and a selection of new in-game gadgets.

The app, however, is yet to receive Rovio’s just announced ‘Account’ feature that lets users save game progress in the cloud and resume playing on any device.

Readdle’s PDF Expert iPad app updated with improved annotating, more

Readdle has updated its popular iPad document storing and annotating app, PDF Expert, with several new features for annotating.

-Сopy and Paste Annotations

-Move, resize and change properties of multiple annotation

-New layout in annotations toolbar for rect/oval/line/arrow

-Improvement in Text Highlight tool

Additionally, the update includes various other enhancements:

What does Samsung’s S-Voice assistant think of Siri?

Despite having access to a pretty powerful voice-enabled, predictive search engine with Google Now, Samsung is still pushing ahead with its own ‘S Voice’ app to try and provide a unique Siri-like experience on its devices. We’ve seen many comparisons of how Samsung might have borrowed from Apple for its own voice-controlled assistant, but today a post from AndroidCentral got us curious about how S Voice reacts when asked about Siri.

The screenshot we grabbed above speaks for itself with the Galaxy S4 returning snappy answers when asked about the iPhone and Siri. When asked, “Have you ever used an iPhone?,” S Voice responded, simply, “No, I have standards.” Another question, “Are you Siri?,” returns the answer, “I think that I am, but I’m a little biased.”

Results appear to vary for users, but it’s certainly an easter egg that Samsung has intentionally included in the app at some point. Siri isn’t free of its own clever responses with users finding several easter eggs and controversial remarks since the app first launched on iPhone 4S. Asking Siri about Samsung or its devices, however, usually just provides a vague response or directs users to Apple’s website or the web.

Some answers Siri gives are amusing, such as responding to marriage questions with “My End User License Agreement does not cover marriage”. People are more amused by the silly stuff, like when you say “call me an ambulance” and she responds by acknowledging “From now on, I’ll call you ‘an ambulance’”.

Amazon Cloud Player app gets support for Ford’s voice-controlled SYNC AppLink platform

Following Spotify’s update early last month, Amazon has updated its Cloud Player iOS app today with support for Ford’s voice-controlled SYNC AppLink platform that allows users to control supported apps on their smartphones through voice commands and buttons on the steering wheel. The update brings Ford SYNC compatibility to the iPhone and iPod touch, as well as improved VoiceOver support and other enhancements.

The updated app will allow users with access to Ford’s SYNC platform in their vehicles to stream songs, albums, and playlists straight from the cloud or stored on the user’s device.

Boingo Wireless’s iOS app updated with $7.99/month subscription billing via iTunes accounts

Boingo Wireless has updated its iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch “WiFi Finder” application with the ability to sign up for WiFi hotspot subscriptions with iTunes credentials. Boingo has over 600,000 WiFi hotspots worldwide, and I typically see Boingo hotspots at airports across the country. Being able to sign up via an iTunes-based subcription will make using a Boingo hotspot easier than ever, so even though Boingo is seemingly giving up a 30% cut to Apple for these new subscriptions, their user base will probably grow due to the easier sign up process. The plan via iTunes is $7.99 per month. As it has always done, the WiFi Finder app features a data tracker and a VPN service. The app is available for free on the App Store.

RunKeeper iPhone app updated with support for Pebble Bluetooth watch, new languages

RunKeeper, one of the more popular fitness tracking apps for iPhone, was updated today with support for one of the most popular Bluetooth smart watches, the Pebble e-paper smart watch. The app also receives support for new languages including Spanish, French, German, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese and Japanese, as well as other performance improvements and fixes.

The updated app will allow you to use your Pebble smart watch to pause and resume RunKeeper from your wrist and view stats during a work out right on the Pebble’s display:

Rovio’s new ‘Account’ feature lets users save game progress in the cloud, resume playing on any device

Angry Birds maker Rovio has announced a new feature coming soon to its titles that will allow users to save game data in the cloud and resume playing where they left off on any device. It’s a feature that is still missing from many mobile games on the App Store, especially those that implement cross platform support for other devices such as Android and Mac. There’s no word on exactly what games Rovio plans to support with the new feature, but it is already rolling out its new “Rovio Account” to users of The Croods game across the globe and some Angry Birds users in locations such as Poland and Finland.

When you register, your game progress from the device will be saved to the cloud.If someone has already registered an account on that same device, it will ask you if you want to save the device’s progress or not. If you choose not to save it, you will start the game as new, blank… When you sign in on a device for the first time, you will be asked if you want to add the scores, stars and feathers from that device to your account. If you say yes, the game progress from that device will be merged with the one already in the cloud.

Viber, the company behind the extremely popular free messaging and VoIP mobile apps for iOS and Android, today took another step towards offering a true Skype alternative by releasing native desktop apps for both Mac and PC.

Not only do the new desktop apps sync and integrate seamlessly with the existing mobile apps, they are also Viber’s first apps to allow video calls. As part of the rollout of the new desktop apps, Viber officially moves into version 3.0 and with it brings new features to the iOS and Android apps including video messages, a revamped photo experience, and a new voice engine with support for eight new languages. With the updated mobile apps, you’ll also have the ability to transfer live calls between your iPhone and the Mac app.

Viber Desktop and the latest versions of the Viber app were designed from the ground up for individuals using Viber on multiple devices, so you can always use the app that’s right for you, whether at home, in school, at the office, or on the go. Viber offers far more flexibility than any similar product. Some of the key combined features include:

-Seamlessly transfer calls between Viber Desktop and the Viber app with one click or tap

-Received and Sent messages are shown on all devices, but will only “beep” on the device you are currently using

-Messages and conversations you delete from one device will be removed from all devices

On top of officially unveiling the new desktop apps, the company confirmed today it has now reached over 200 million users in 193 countries.
