Apple has just begun rolling out iOS 10.3.1 for iPhones and iPads. With Apple’s iOS 10.3 release we saw a lack of support for 32-bit devices, but that’s changed with today’s update. iOS 10.3.1 brings back support for 32-bit devices and is available for the iPhone 5 and 5c. Release notes for this particular update are light, only noting bug fixes and security improvements.

There are quite a few new features in iOS 10.3, from security fixes through Find My AirPods through the ability for app developers to reply to reviews. Renaud Lienhart – until recently, an Apple engineer working on iOS – shared one more than isn’t visually noticeable, but should make devices feel a little faster.

You can now try out the hidden ‘floating’ iPad keyboard in iOS 10.3 within Swift Playgrounds

Back in January, developer Steven Troughton-Smith uncovered a new one-handed floating keyboard for iPad hidden inside an iOS 10.3 beta. He has now created a Swift Playground that allows you to play with the feature. It works with all iPads except the 12.9-inch iPad Pro.

The feature works in a similar way to picture-in-picture, creating a keyboard that takes up less room than the standard one and can be moved around the screen to position it in a place where it doesn’t cover the content you’re typing …

Site default logo image

Apple appears to be planning to drop support for 32-bit apps in an upcoming version of iOS. The alert dialog presented when launching a 32-bit app on iOS 10.3 beta 1 now warns users that the app needs to be updated to continue working on future versions of iOS. This suggests that iOS 11 expected later this year could be the first version to only support 64-bit apps.

Apple will eventually require apps to use the new iOS 10.3 API for App Store rating popups

Apple is launching an official way for developers to ask for ratings in the App Store with iOS 10.3. The new system attempts to strike a balance for customer experience and developer incentive, allowing users to leave a rating without leaving the app — but the API enforces that the developer can only display the popup three times a year.

Adoption will not be mandatory with iOS 10.3 but Apple intends to force developers to use the official API in the future, via Daring Fireball.

With every year comes a new version of iOS and this year will likely be no different. In 2017, we should expect iOS 11 to be previewed over the summer with subsequent developer and public betas and a release to the public in the fall. It’s also likely that we’ll see a less significant iOS release during the spring with iOS 10.3.
