The iPhone 12 includes 5G speed, an A14 Bionic chip, an edge-to-edge OLED display, and it comes in multiple color options starting at $699.

iPhone 12

The iPhone 12 is Apple’s flagship smartphone introduced in the fall of 2020. The iPhone 12 lineup consists of four devices ranging from 5.4-inches to 6.7-inches in screen size, with flagship features including 5G connectivity, OLED displays, and more.

5G and A14

One of the flagship features of the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro is support for 5G connectivity. There is support for mmWave 5G in the United States exclusively, and support for sub-6GHz 5G in other countries as well as in the U.S.

The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro are also both powered by a new A14 Bionic processor that uses a new 5 nanometer process to reduce transistor size. Apple says the new six-core CPU is up to 50% faster than any other smartphone. The iPhone 12 also includes a new 4-core GPU, which is up to 50% faster than the competition.

iPhone 12

Design and display

The iPhone 12 features a flat-edged design with aluminum edges. The iPhone 12 mini packs a 5.4-inch display while the iPhone 12 features a 6.1-inch display.

Compared to the iPhone 11, the 2020 iPhone is 11% thinner and 15% smaller in volume. Apple has adopted OLED displays across the board, improving contrast and brightness over last year’s LCD display iPhone 11 model. The display itself is a Super Retina XDR panel with a “Ceramic Shield” cover for improved durability and 4x better drop performance.

The iPhone 12 features a 2532×1770 pixel resolution display at 460 pixels-per-inch. The mini display is 2340×1080 in terms of resolution, equating to 476 pixels-per-inch.

Camera

The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini feature a dual-camera setup with wide and ultra wide lenses, alongside more capable Smart HDR and improved Night mode with support for the selfie camera and the ultra wide for the first time. There is also a new Night mode Time-lapse feature on the iPhone 12.

Pricing and release

Apple has secured special deals with Sprint, T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon to offer the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 at $699/$799, respectively. If you’re buying for any other carrier, or buying the unlocked version, you’ll pay $729 for the iPhone 12 mini and $829 for the iPhone 12. That’s a $30 price increase based on your carrier.

The iPhone 12 mini was released on November 13, 2020 while the iPhone 12 was released on October 23.

Design

The iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max feature a glass and stainless steel edges. The iPhone 12 Pro measures in at 6.1-inches in terms of screen size, and the iPhone 12 Pro Max features a 6.7-inch display.

Apple says the form factors of the larger iPhone 12 Pro devices are “nearly the same” than the smaller iPhone 11 Pro models they replace, even though the screen sizes have increased. The frame of the iPhone 12 Pro is made out of a durable and shiny stainless steel material available in four different finishes.

Camera

As has become the norm over the last several years, the camera hardware is what differentiates the iPhone 12 Pro from the iPhone 12. The iPhone 12 Pro features a triple-lens camera setup on the back with a telephoto lens, an ultra wide lens, and a wide lens.

Apple says that the new wide camera features the fastest ever aperture on the iPhone, for 27 percent improved low-light performance in photo and video. The ultra wide features a 120-degree field of view, which Apple says is even better for expansive landscape shots.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max features an even larger wide camera sensor, making for an 87 percent improvement in low-light photography. Combined, the Ultra Wide and Telephoto lens system offer 5x optical zoom range, Apple says. You also get all of the same software improvements as the iPhone 12, including Dolby Vision video recording, 10-bit HDR video recording, improved Smart HDR and Night mode, and more.

Finally, both devices also feature an all-new LiDAR Scanner on the back. The LiDAR Scanner enables object and room scanning, AR features, and more. The LiDAR Scanner also contributes to low-light auto focus and improving capture time.

Colors

Both devices are available in four colors, including graphite, silver, gold, and pacific blue.

Pricing and release

The iPhone 12 Pro starts at $999 for 128GB of storage, $1,099 for 256GB of storage, and $1,299 for 512GB of storage. The iPhone 12 Pro Max goes for $1,099, $1,199, and $1,399 for the same storage configurations.

The Pro was released on October 23, 2020 and the Pro Max was released on November 13.

iPhone 12 Accessories

Citing environmental concerns, Apple is no longer including headphones or a charging brick in the iPhone 12 box this year. Here are some accessories you might consider picking up to help fill that gap.

Former Apple engineers might help current ones

A startup created by former Apple engineers has created a system that could well prove helpful to current Apple engineers during the coronavirus crisis.

One of the early steps Apple took in response to the virus was to ban its US engineers from flying to China. It’s widely expected that this sensible precaution is likely to lead to a delay in launching the iPhone 12

LG gets orders for 20M OLED iPhone screens this year, ending Samsung monopoly

OLED iPhone screens to be made by LG as well as Samsung

While Samsung has so far had the exclusive contract for flagship OLED iPhone screens, we learned last November that this is set to change – with LG coming on board as a second supplier for the iPhone 12 lineup. LG currently only makes displays for iPhones with LCD screens, along with a small number of OLED ones for older models.

A new report out of Korea claims to have more details and says that LG has received orders for up to 20M OLED screens for this year’s iPhones, with Samsung picking up the remaining 55M orders. If correct, the orders also give some insight into Apple’s expectations for one of the four models expected …

Kuo: Apple may not include EarPods headphones in iPhone 12 box to boost AirPods sales

According to the latest report from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple may not include the wired EarPods headphones in the box of the iPhone 12. This would naturally drive sales of Apple’s second-generation AirPods, as customers would no longer be getting free headphones with their new phones.

Kuo suggests that Apple may heavily promote or discount the AirPods this holiday season, with no new models of AirPods or AirPods Pro expected until 2021.

Rumors: iPhone 12 Pro to feature ProMotion high-refresh rate screen, improved Face ID, 3x rear camera zoom

Max Weinbach’s latest reporting as featured in EverythingApplePro’s video indicates that the iPhone 12 will feature a high refresh-rate 120Hz ProMotion display. Or at least, only on the iPhone 12 Pro phones: that’s the high-end 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch models.

The phone will dynamically switch between 60Hz and 120Hz modes to conserve battery life where appropriate. This is similar to the ProMotion system available in the iPad Pro for a few years now. To support the 120Hz feature, the internal battery is also growing in capacity to maintain good battery life even when the phone is refreshing the display rapidly for extended periods.

Apple iPhone 12 mass production delayed by a month, according to Wall Street Journal

How to clean sanitize iPhone without damaging it

Echoing other reports, the Wall Street Journal is today reporting that Apple is about a month behind on iPhone production. This means the iPhone 12 will likely launch later than the usual September window, as a result of the impacts of the coronavirus on the supply chain.

Apple will launch four new iPhone 12 models this year, one 5.4-inch model, one 6.7-inch model, and two 6.1-inch models. This means Apple will be offering its latest flagship devices in new smaller and larger form factors. The current iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro lines feature 5.8-inch, 6.1-inch, and 6.5-inch displays.

Analysts suggests only US iPhone 12 will have faster 5G; launch ‘Oct to Dec’

Faster 5G might be limited to US iPhones this year

There’s been disagreement among analysts about whether the iPhone 12 will support the faster 5G standard known as mmWave. It is this standard that theoretically offers gigabit speeds – as fast as the fastest fiber-optic home broadband services.

One report said no, another said yes, while a new report backs a third possibility: only on US iPhones …

Apple planning to boost iPhone production over last year whatever sales levels

Boost iPhone production – Apple to suppliers

Apple has reportedly told several suppliers that it plans to boost iPhone production over last year’s levels, despite fears that the economic fallout of the coronavirus crisis could significantly dampen demand.

Analysts had widely predicted a ‘supercycle’ of around 220M iPhone sales this year when the company launches its first 5G models, but with a global recession now expected due to coronavirus lockdowns, and record unemployment in the US and other countries, that idea has been thrown into doubt …

iPhone 12 Pro Max schematics show off thinner body design with smaller screen bezels, bigger antenna lines and rear cameras, Smart Connector?

Seemingly-reliable schematics for the upcoming iPhone 12 Pro Max sourced by Max Weinbach are featured in EverythingApplePro’s latest YouTube video. The key takeaways reflect what we already knew: the new iPhone is going to share a lot of design aesthetics from the iPad Pro.

As always, the devil is in the details. The CADs show the squared-off flat side finish we’ve been expecting, but confirms the previously leaked size specifications. The schematics suggest the phone will get thinner compared to the iPhone 11 Pro Max, from 8.1 mm down to 7.4 mm.

TSMC earnings suggest optimism about iPhone SE

The latest TSMC earnings report suggests that the company is reasonably optimistic about demand for the new iPhone SE, but is far less certain what may happen in regard to the iPhone 12 launch later in the year.

Bloomberg: iPhone 12 to feature smaller notch and share design cues with iPad Pro, half-size cheaper HomePod later this year

Bloomberg today reports that of the four new iPhone models in the iPhone 12 lineup, at least two will feature a redesigned chassis with flat stainless steel edges, with flat sides and more sharply rounded corners like the current iPad Pro design.

The size of the Face ID notch is also expected to get smaller this year. Echoing previous reports, Apple is also working on a cheaper HomePod that would be about half the size of the current product. Bloomberg says the iPhone 12 and HomePod are expected to launch later this year.

Image reportedly shows iPhone 12 design with smaller notch and iOS 14 home screen widgets

As a continuation of a purported leak of what the iPhone 12 camera bump will look like, the same Twitter source has now shared a larger image that shows the supposed front of the iPhone 12 as well.

What appears to be shown is a new design iPhone 12 with a notch that is less wide than the current iPhone 11 series. The outlined graphic shows a stylized representation of the home screen, as if this image was meant to be used in an instructional manual somewhere. However, 9to5Mac cannot confirm its legitimacy and its original sourcing is unclear.
