Apple shares its own iPhone XS review roundup, focusing entirely on the positives

Today was iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max review day – meaning the first reviews of Apple’s latest smartphones hit the web. As we noted this morning in our roundup, the story was pretty consistent among reviewers: a small update from the iPhone X, and it might be best to wait for the XR.

Now, Apple has shared its own roundup of iPhone XS reviews, and as you would expect, the company focuses on the positives…

Cook asked to justify iPhone prices, and why Apple was excluded from Chinese import tariffs

We heard yesterday that Apple CEO Tim Cook would be appearing on Good Morning America, and guessed that the trade war with China would be one of the topics. The show did indeed kick off with Cook being asked why Apple products had been excluded from the tariffs.

The iPhone is assembled in China, but the parts come from everywhere, including the United States. The glass comes from Kentucky, there are chips that come from the US, and of course the research and development is all done in the United States.

I don’t want to speak for [the Trump administration], but I think they’ve looked at this and said that it’s not really great for the United States to put a tariff on those type of products …

Comment: The iPhone XS reviews show exactly why Apple had to drop the iPhone X

Last year’s iPhone X arguably represented the biggest design change ever seen in the evolution of Apple’s smartphone.

The iPhone thru iPhone 3GS were all essentially the same design. The slab-sided iPhone 4 represented a pretty big change, but was still recognizably the same device. The iPhone 5 was just a larger version. The iPhone 6 introduced a new design language as well as size, with rounded edges contributing to a slimmer look, but you’d still instantly pick it out as an iPhone.

iPhone XS/Max review roundup: iPhone X owners, don’t bother; everyone else, wait for the XR

The first reviews of the iPhone XS and XS Max are out, and the story is incredibly consistent.

While reviewers do note that the iPhone XS offers notably better sound than the X, and the camera improvements impressed many, the overwhelming view was that there’s little here to justify an upgrade from last year’s model unless you want that giant screen.

If you currently own any of the older models, then the consensus view is that one of this year’s iPhones is a big upgrade – but don’t order one yet, because the iPhone XR offers most of the benefits at a significantly lower price …

Longer-lasting, higher-priced iPhones can be a win-win for Apple and customers alike, argues analyst

Two trends in iPhones might seem to place the interests of Apple and its customers on opposite sides of the fence. Making iPhones more expensive seems good for Apple, bad for customers. Conversely, making iPhones last longer would seem good for customers, bad for Apple.

But all is not necessarily as it seems, argues one of the smarter Apple analysts …

Kuo: Apple to ship >75 million new iPhones this year, mostly XR and XS Max, new Watch proving popular

Apple announced its flagship iPhone lineup of iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR to a generally mixed reception. Ming-Chi Kuo says that the XS preorders are ‘lackluster’, but believes in the strength of XS Max demand and the iPhone XR launch in October.

He also noted that TF Industries are raising estimates for Apple Watch Series 4, with the new models taking about 55% share, alongside the cheaper Series 3 watches.
