I have been using Apple products for over ten years.  My first Mac was a 14″ Late 2004 iBook with a 1.33 GHz Power PC processor, 60 GB hard drive, and 512 MB of RAM.  Now, I write and work on a 15″ Mid 2010 MacBook Pro with dual core 2.4 GHz i5 processors, 500 GB hard drive and 8 GB of RAM.
I currently have a 16 GB iPhone 4S, a 32 GB iPad 2 Wifi Model, a third-generation Apple TV, a 8 GB fourth-generation iPod Touch, a fourth-generation iPod shuffle, a seventh-generation iPod Nano, and a (rare!) @mac.com email address.

How-to: Setup and Use Chromecast to stream your content from a Mac and iOS device

Site default logo image

Screenshot 2014-01-31 22.41.55

The Chromecast, Google’s streaming HDMI dongle came out last summer. It is compatible with any Android device running 2.3 or later, iOS device with iOS 6 or 7, and any Mac or PC. Initially, users were able to stream Netflix or Youtube from an iOS device and Android device, Google Play Movies and Music only on Android, or cast websites using the Chrome browser on a computer. The Chromecast works differently from Airplay in that you can multitask and do other tasks on the device or you can let it go to sleep while streaming.

Very quickly after its release, Chromecast has received support for Hulu +, Pandora, and HBO GO. Last month a major update added ten new apps including Plex, Vevo, Songza, Red Bull TV, Post TV from the Washington Post, Viki, RealPlayer Cloud, Avia, Revision3 Internet Television and BeyondPod. The most recent update the Chromecast received allowed users to stream Google Play Movies and Music directly from the Chrome browser on a computer.

In this How-to, we’ll discuss how to setup the Chromecast, use it with a Mac and iOS device and explore its gaming potential.

Review: Outread helps you get through your reading list even faster using a unique text highlighting system

Outread is a new speed reader app for the iPhone that helps you read faster by highlighting short sections of text. Focusing on the highlighted section helps you efficiently and quickly move through the text. This differs from most speed reader apps in that they use a technique called Rapid Serial Visual Presentation, which presents one word at a time.

Both of these speed reading techniques force the reader to stop reading out loud inside their head (subvocalization), which is what slows us down when we are reading. Generally a reader’s average reading speed is two hundred words per minute, but Outread supports reading speeds up to one thousand words per minute and a marker size of one hundred characters.

photo

Under the app’s settings, you can adjust the Reading Speed (how many words go by per minute), Marker Size (how many characters are highlighted), and the size of the text. You can also enable a dark theme and see a preview of the different fonts that are available. The color of the highlighter is not customizable. Because of this, I found that it took me a while to find the highlighter when using the app’s dark theme.

Outread also has a feature that allows you to import text or URL’s from your clipboard. While it doesn’t automatically detect the clipboard’s contents when you launch the app, the function is only a tap away.

You are also able to install a “Read In Outread” bookmark which will save articles from Safari to the app’s reading list. When you save the articles to Outread, it downloads them for offline viewing so you can read them without an internet connection, which is perfect for use while traveling. If you use Pocket, Readability, or have an Instapaper subscription you are able to sign into these accounts in Outread and see your offline lists.

6

Outread does not support importing Microsoft Word documents, Pages files, or PDF files, which is inconvenient when it comes to reading papers and articles for school. Hopefully this functionality will be added in a future update. For now, copying the text from those documents and importing it via the clipboard is a helpful workaround.

I have been using Outread for reading the news and articles for school. Compared to other speed reader apps that use rapid serial visualization presentation, I find that it takes a bit of getting used to the animation when it scrolls down the page. If you want to try an app that can help you get through your reading list much faster, I recommend giving it a try. Outread is available in the App Store for $2.99.

Starbucks, this week, updated their iconic Pick of the Week promotion to take advantage of iOS 7’s ability to use the device’s camera to redeem iTunes gift cards. Before that, customers had to pick up a physical card featuring a promo code to redeem the Pick of the Week app and manually type the code into the iTunes Store. Earlier this year, Starbucks began offering the promotion via an App Store app. The pick of the week promotion allows customers pickup cards from participating Starbucks locations and download an app or other piece of iTunes media for free:

Review: Nike+ FuelBand SE, a smart fitness band that encourages you to get active

Site default logo image

Screenshot 2013-12-08 22.32.23

Nike’s fitness band, the FuelBand came out in February of 2012. The Nike+ FuelBand SE, the newest model of the fitness device, was released last month. Since it relies on Bluetooth LE, the Nike+ FuelBand SE is compatible with the iPhone 4S and later, as well as the fifth generation iPod Touch. Bluetooth LE allows the band to automatically connect with the Nike+ FuelBand App. The new FuelBand has been designed to be more accurate and more water-resistant.

I have been using the Nike+ FuelBand SE for a little over a month, going through two defective units (one with a broken clasp, and one with a faulty battery and accelerometer) and finally stuck with the third band (which had a sticky button) for the purpose of this review.

Review: Prismatic news reader revamped with increased focus on personal interests

Screenshot 2013-12-18 17.17.30

Prismatic is a news-reading app that creates a tailored feed based on each user’s personal interests. The app can analyze and crawl the user’s social data from sites like Twitter and Facebook, then analyze it for common threads that could point to specific interests. Once Prismatic is done analyzing the aggregated data, it recommends following topics it believes the user will find interesting.

Once the user has selected a few topics, Prismatic regularly tracks down content from all over the web that fit into these topics and presents them for easy reading. There are over 10,000 interests to follow, and Prismatic looks at over 5 million new stories each day.

The articles are presented on a news feed that combines all of a user’s interests on one page. Every article displays one or two lines of text, a photo (if the article includes one), and shows how many people have liked it, disliked it, or shared it. By liking or disliking a story in the news feed, users can help Prismatic’s algorithm continue to learn more about what types of content they want to see.

The Explore section lets users suggested interests and search for specific users or publications. If you find articles that you want to share, Prismatic allows you to publish links to them through Twitter, Facebook, or email.

If you’re searching for a smarter way to discover and read news on your favorite subjects, you should consider giving Prismatic a try. You can get it for free from the App Store

Apple Store employees getting accessory discounts again for the holidays

Today it was revealed that for the holiday season Google will be giving its employees a Nexus 5 or a Nexus 7. In past years, Apple has not given its retail employees a significant gift for the holiday, though employees have been given hoodies.

The first gift to Apple Retail Employees was $10 off of a $50 iTunes gift card. This isn’t something to brag about considering a lot of stores offer this promotion frequently. Another gift Apple gives its retail employees is the ability to purchase third-party accessories at a steep discount, with new products being added to the selection each week. Apple has done this in past years:

Review: Inbox Cube changes email by highlighting attachments and contacts

Screenshot 2013-11-14 12.46.05

Inbox Cube is a new innovative app that allows the user to easily navigate and find their emails and quick respond to them. It does this by separating your email into three different “cubes”: Emails, Attachments,  and Contacts. Inbox Cube supports Gmail, iCloud, Yahoo!, AOL, and other generic IMAP accounts. It allows multiple email accounts which you are able to view separately.

[vimeo http://vimeo.com/79432766]

The Email Cube is where you’ll find your emails. The sender’s contact photo appears on the left side of the preview (or their first initial, if they don’t have a photo). A paperclip indicator tells you if the email contains attachments, how many attachments there are, and whether you starred the email for reference later.

By default the tiny preview of the message is the first two lines. If you want to preview more of your email without entering the message, pinching out will show you the first four lines of the message (or the first three lines with thumbnails of some of the attachments). Swiping to the right initiates the “action cube,” giving you one-tap options for forwarding, replying, adding stars to messages, marking mail as read, moving, and deleting.

The Attachment Cube allows you to view all of your attachments, both sent and received. It provides a visual preview of each attachment and allows you to quickly go back to the email that contained it. There are also different views for separating out the different types of attachments such as photos, videos and documents.

attachments

The last cube, Contacts Cube organizes email by contact. It groups all of any correspondence to or from a specific contact together. This makes finding emails from certain people very efficient. This process is much quicker than searching your inbox for that contact and waiting for the search results to load.

contacts

Inbox Cube promises to deliver great features, but falls short in many areas, not the least of which is the number of bugs. Right away using it on my iPhone 4S going through the tutorial it was easily noticeable that parts of the interface were chopped off due to the smaller screen size. This also happened on occasion in the Attachments Cube and Contacts Cube, where you cannot scroll all the way down to see everything at the bottom.

Most of bugs lie in the Attachments Cube. Sometimes a few of the previews fail to load, while other times they all show up blank. At times the app says you have no attachments at all, even when this is clearly not the case.

The content in the Contacts Cube doesn’t always match up with the device’s built-in address book. For example, Contacts Cube easily allows you to add a photo to the contact, but that photo will not appear in the vCard in the Contacts app. If you use VIPs in the Mail app, or Favorites in the Contacts app those will not transfer over to favorites in Inbox Cube. It would be nice if either VIPs or Favorites would sync across the two different services. Also there is not a way to merge Contacts into one, which could be beneficial if one of your contacts has multiple email accounts. In the Contacts Cube it would be useful if there was an indicator denoting if you have a new email from your contact, as opposed to searching your inbox to see if anything important came.

Despite the quirks and bugs, with future updates, Inbox Cube can become a very efficient and powerful email client. It makes navigating through the cultter of your inbox easy and efficient by showing you only the things you need. Inbox Cube is available for free in the App Store.

Microsoft hits iPad Air in new holiday-themed ads geared towards family usage

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XsknmA96Jv0]

Microsoft has previously aired commercials that targeted the iPad comparing multitasking and mocked Siri. Microsoft airs new commercials in time for the holidays that pits the Surface 2 against Apple’s iPad Air. These three new ads demonstrate that Windows 8 can handle hands free mode, multiple accounts and has a USB port.

Microsoft’s first ad (above) shows the Surface 2 being propped up with the kickstand, using Bing’s Food and Drink app to demonstrate hands free mode. While cooking you can turn the pages by swiping them in the air, as opposed to touching the display and getting it messy. We admit it, that’s a nice (if niche) feature – though most recipes fit on one page, of course.

The second shows the Surface 2 being used in family scenarios, with multiple user accounts on the same device. These user accounts can have different apps, games, background – with parents able to monitor what their children are using. I’m not sure too many families bother to set up different accounts on PCs, let alone tablets.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=knSd7-i9u1c]

The third shows how the Surface 2 has a standard USB 3.0 port, allowing users to easily connect to an external display. Because having to use a lead is so much better than Air Play …

Jobs came into theaters on August 16th of this year. The film received mixed reviews, where some thought the film was intriguing but slightly over exaggerated, whereas others criticized the film as being inaccurate. It was better than iSteve.

For those that missed Jobs in the theaters it is available today in iTunes and on DVD. Through iTunes, Jobs is available to purchase for $19.99 in high definition or for $14.99 in standard definition, or it is available to rent for $4.99 in high definition or $3.99 in standard definition. Genius Bar reservation page now suggests online support solutions for quick troubleshooting

Screenshot 2013-11-23 21.40.10Apple offers free services at the Apple Store, including free technical support at the Genius Bar and free workshops to help customers learn more about using their Apple devices. Several months ago, the process of signing up for a Genius Bar reservation changed and now requires using an Apple ID to register.

Today, Apple has again updated the Genius Bar reservation workflow. Before signing in with an Apple ID, consumers are presented with a new page that highlights the various online support tools that Apple offers. If desired, users can continue with their initial plan of making the reservation for the Genius Bar, or can try to “save a trip to the store” by working with an AppleCare representative online. If the issue in question involves iTunes, iCloud, or Apple ID services, AppleCare can help customers for free regardless of whether any of that customer’s Apple products are still covered under AppleCare. For hardware- or software-related issues, AppleCare does offer pay-per-incident fees, or offers the option to purchase AppleCare if the product is still covered under the original warranty.

Recently the AppleCare support website was updated with 24/7 chat support, and customers were offered the option to initiate screensharing on their Mac with AppleCare representatives.

With this new page, it seems Apple is hoping customers will conduct basic troubleshooting at home before making a trip to the Genius Bar, which will hopefully cut down on the number of appointments booked for simple issues and provide customers who really do need Genius support with even more timeslots to choose from.

Review: mik Sound Case cranks up the volume on your iPhone

Site default logo image

photo

The mik Sound Case is a new type of phone case available for the iPhone 4/4S and iPhone 5/5s. It amplifies the phone’s speaker by an additional 15 to 20 decibels and improves the clarity and quality of the sound. By blocking the speaker, the case forces the sound to travel through a hollow space and out an opening on the back of the phone. Thankfully, the lightweight case doesn’t add any additional weight to the phone.

Springpad for iOS updated with customized smart notebook templates

Screenshot 2013-11-21 15.48.53

Springpad, the popular personal organizer app, makes it even easier to stay organized with their latest update by introducing customized notebook templates. These themed notebooks include different categories: Recipes, For Later, Tasks, Work Project, Holiday Gift Planner, Books, Movies, and Home Improvement. These templates are great for helping unorganized people get organized.

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gVl19HOdMeY]

Some of these templates are “smart templates,” meaning that the app knows the information you are putting in and either organizes it for you or provides you with more information. My family goes out to the movies frequently during the holiday season. Using the Movies template, entering  movies we want to see automatically organizes them based on whether each movie is playing in theaters, available to stream on Netflix, or available to rent. Another new template, the Holiday Gift Planner makes it easier to come up with your shopping list. When entering items, you are able to either scan the product’s bar code or type it in manually. This allows you to look up more information about the product and quickly buy it. If you are buying tech-related gifts, don’t forget to check out 9to5Mac for product reviews and 9to5Toys for the best deals this holiday season.

More Apple Stores will be open on Thanksgiving Day and open earlier on Black Friday

Site default logo image

Screenshot 2013-11-14 06.53.14

Update: IFOAppleStore claims that Tim Cook has cancelled the plans to keep additional stores open on Thanksgiving after objections from Market Directors:

On Wednesday morning over the objections of the Market Directors, Apple CEO Tim Cook learned of the plans to keep several stores open on Thanksgiving, and cancelled the plan. Cook’s objection was specifically that it’s important that Apple retail employees be with their families on the holiday.

Apple Stores typically close for the major holidays like Easter, Christmas and Thanksgiving, but two or three of their flagship stores remain open for the holidays. The Apple Store at Fifth Avenue is open every day of the year, 24/7 and will be open on Thanksgiving as it was last year.

Other Apple Stores usually open on Thanksgiving are the Apple Store at The Forum Shops in Las Vegas, located in Caesars Palace, and the Royal Hawaiian – both located in very popular, tourist-heavy shopping areas.

This year, however, we’ve learned from changes to employee schedules that an additional nine stores will be open …

Delaware’s tax-free Apple Store sells more iPhones than any other store

Screenshot 2013-11-13 20.57.09

Ever been curious to find out which Apple Store sells the most iPhones? Look no further than the Apple Store in Newark, Delaware in the Christiana Mall. This might come as a surprise, but the fact of the matter is that the state of Delaware has no sales tax. The Christiana Mall is conveniently located halfway between Newark, Delaware and Wilmington, Delaware and attracts customers along the borders of New Jersey to the north, and Maryland on the west, as well as New York and Pennsylvania.

The Specialists at the Christiana Mall are eager to report how well they perform. One Specialist told ABC news, “We sell more iPhones than anyone.” Another employee compares the Christiana Mall store against the Fifth Avenue Store stating, “The only store that does more volume is the glass box on Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue and that is open 24 hours a day. But no one sells more phones than we do.” A third employee told ABC News that because of the lack of sales tax, customers buy dozens, or even hundreds of phones at a time and resell them in foreign countries at a significant profit.

The store is guarded with at least two state troopers at all times for crowd control, which is something Apple pays for, not Delaware taxpayers.

Apple has refused to comment on these claims.

It has the same look and feel as the new OS, with a clean, flat interface. The new Star Walk makes it easier than ever to stargaze. Now you no longer have to deal with reading and interpreting star charts, or twisting and turning in awkward positions to find the objects you are looking for while holding a red light.

Using this augmented reality app, users just need to hold and point the iPhone, iPod Touch or the iPad up at the sky. The app reveals over two hundred thousand stars (in their original color according to the star catalog), constellations, planets, satellites, comets and galaxies.
