Apple faces antitrust investigation into Apple Music and Apple News

Apple is facing a Dutch antitrust investigation into whether it favors its own apps over those of rival developers. It looks likely to have an initial focus on Apple Music and Apple News, but will probably extend to other app categories, and may also include Google’s Play store.

Spotify has already filed a complaint with the European Commission, alleging that Apple Music has an unfair advantage over Spotify, and today’s report references that and says that ‘apps for news media’ is another focus …

Cloned virtual phone number apps breaking App Store rules to increase discovery [U]

Update: Just a day after this report about multiple developers gaming the App Store with cloned apps, Apple has removed many of the ones that were pointed out by TechCrunch’s Romain Dillet.

Popular email client Newton Mail makes surprise return to App Store following summer shut down

On August 7, CloudMagic CEO Rohit Nadhani announced that the company’s popular Newton Mail app would be shutting down come September. Users who paid the annual $99 subscription fee would be refunded, and the app would be no longer. Apple’s App Store saw 164 publishers generate $1M in 2018, nearly double than Google’s Play Store

New data from SensorTower today reveals 164 publishers generated their first million dollars in net revenue during 2018, an approximately 13% increase from 143 in 2017.

The interesting data point arises when comparing to Google’s Play Store, who saw 71 publishers last year net one million dollars, and just 88 in 2018.

A market research study by AppsFlyer details the ever-growing mobile advertising world, as $38.9 billion was reportedly spent in 2018, with 34% growth expected by 2020, reaching $64.1 billion, globally.

The study attributes the growth to the fact there are more smartphones than ever paired with an ever-growing app catalogue. Thus, more paid campaigns have resulted in more ad spend than ever.
