Purdue University goes all-in on Apple Wallet student IDs, will no longer issue physical cards

Apple first added support for student cards in Apple Wallet with iOS 12 and watchOS 5, and since then, the feature has gradually expanded to more universities in the United States. Now, Purdue University has announced support for the feature, allowing students to add their ID to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet for the first time.

Here’s how deliveries and order tracking will work in the iOS 16 Wallet app

Package delivery and order tracking is one of the new features coming to the Wallet app in iOS 16. This is technically in the betas now, but no merchant partners have released support yet, so it’s essentially unusable. Hopefully, we’ll see something alongside iOS 16’s release in the fall; presumably, the Apple Store app will support it so you can track your new iPhone on your old iPhone.

However, Apple recently published sample payloads as examples in its developer documentation, which gives us our first look at the UI in the action.

Apple Wallet student IDs feature expands to new school ahead of fall semester

Storing IDs within Apple Wallet is increasingly becoming more commonplace. A school in North Dakota is launching mobile IDs in Apple Wallet and Google Pay ahead of the fall semester. Valley City State University (VCSU) students, faculty, and staff are now able to hold their Viking Mobile ID on their iPhone, Apple Watch, or Android device.

Employee badges at Chicago’s Fulton Market District neighborhood 167 Green Street are now Apple Wallet compatible. Instead of having a physical badge, employees only need their iPhone or Apple Watch to access their destination. New ‘Apple Account Card’ now available in the Wallet app for iOS 15.5 users

Earlier this year, 9to5Mac discovered that Apple had been working to rebrand iTunes Pass as “Apple Account Card” in the Wallet app with iOS 15.5. Interbank teases Apple Pay launch in Peru as South American expansion continues [U]

Update: After 9to5Mac published that Interbank Peru was announcing Apple Pay support, the bank removed its videos about the service as well as the page promoting Apple’s own payment system. As of now, only Brazil and Colombia offer the ability to add debit and credit cards to the Apple Wallet in South America.

Apple Pay has had its first expansion in 2022 as Peru is now enabling Apple’s own payment system through Interbank. With that, this is the third South American country to support Apple Pay.

At WWDC in June, Apple unveiled its ambitious plans to allow users in participating states to store their IDs in the Wallet application. This feature was initially slated to launch sometime this year, but it ended up being delayed until 2022. It’s been a couple of years since Apple launched the Express Transit feature for users to pay for public transportation just by taking the iPhone closer to an NFC terminal, without the need for an ID verification.
