The original Apple Watch (later called Series 0) was released on April 24, 2015, after years of rumors. While there was a lot of initial hype around it, the third-party watchOS apps were slow to launch due to API limitations. Native apps were available in watchOS 2. The original watch came in 38mm and 42mm sizes.

The Series 2 Watch was released on September 16th, 2016 along with a Series 1 Watch. The Series 2 included the S2 chip, built-in GPS, and water-proof construction. The Series 1 included the S2, but lacked GPS and waterproofing.

The Series 3 Watch was released on September 22, 2017, and it included an LTE option and the S3 chip. The Series 4 Watch was released on September 21, 2018. New hardware included the S4 Chip, Electrical heart sensor w/ ECG app, and larger display (40mm and 44mm sizes).

Apple Watch Series 5 was announced during Apple’s fall event on September 10, 2019. Customers were able to purchase the device later that day, and it was released on September 20. The headline feature for this model was the wearable’s always-on display. The new display always shows the time and complications and is also the first from the company to include a built-in compass.

Apple launched international emergency services to every cellular model. Series 5 also brought back ceramic white, and new natural brush and space black titanium models.

Apple Watch Series 6 was unveiled on September 15, 2020 at the “Time Flies” event alongside the more affordable SE and new iPad Air. New features of the Series 6 include blood oxygen monitoring, new watch colors, faster S6 chip, new watch faces, and more.

Niantic plans for Pokémon Go app for Apple Watch (Updated)

[ed. note: We got this one wrong. We had heard a similar story to the reddit post from a 3rd party that was working with Niantic on the Pokemon Go Watch.  That person explained that Niantic was focusing on their own wearable and not the Apple Watch App.]

At this point it is clear that our source was wrong and we were wrong. Sorry for blowing that one, we’ll do better in the future.

Niantic is working on its own wearables.  Pokemon Go is available at the app store.

Back in September, Apple and Niantic announced that the popular game Pokémon Go was coming to the Apple Watch before the end of this year. Since then, however, no news has come concerning that release and now it appears that the plans have been scrapped altogether…

Trauma surgeon & ER doctor crowdfunding Apple Watch app to detect falls for the elderly

Site default logo image

A trauma surgeon and emergency medicine doctor are crowdfunding FallCall, an Apple Watch app which automatically detects when someone has fallen and calls for the appropriate level of help.

The app was developed in response to statistics showing that one in three people aged 65+ fall each year, resulting in 27,000 deaths in the US. Many of those who fall are unable to call for help, either because they are unconscious or cannot reach a phone. The app is designed to take action automatically, based on the detected severity of the fall …

1Password 6.5 for iOS introduces native Apple Watch app, and a better onboarding experience

1Password, a longtime favorite password manager of the 9to5Mac team, has just released the latest update to their iOS apps. The usual bug fixes are included, but most importantly is the inclusion of the newly updated and native Apple Watch app, and an overall better first time experience. Previously 1Password’s watchOS app required the Watch and iPhone to be paired in the moment to view your stored passwords, but today’s update allows it to work separately.

Yesterday afternoon, Apple released watchOS 3.1.1 to Apple Watch users, offering support for Unicode 9.0 emoji, bug fixes and performance improvements, and more. Tim Cook: Apple Watch sales growth is ‘off the charts’, expecting best quarter ever this holiday season

Site default logo image

Rebutting an IDC analyst report that intimated Apple Watch sales were down more than 70% year-over-year, Tim Cook has announced that the Apple Watch is in fact seeing “off the chart” sales growth (via Reuters).

Although Apple refuses to announce exact numbers for units sold, Cook said that during the first week of holiday shopping, Apple Watch sell-through was higher than any other week in the product’s history. Apple expects the product to be one of the top holiday gifts this year, boosted by the introduction of the Apple Watch Series 2.

Apple VP Paul Deneve disappears from Apple exec bio page, now reports to Jeff Williams

Site default logo image

Apple’s vice president of special projects Paul Deneve has disappeared from the Apple executive bios page on Apple’s website. Deneve joined Apple in 2013 after serving as chief executive officer at fashion brand Saint Laurent. His removal from the biography signifies a change in management structure; Deneve now reports to Apple COO Jeff Williams rather than Tim Cook directly. Deneve is thought to have played a key role in the design and development of the Apple Watch.

Best Black Friday Apple Deals: iPad Pro 9.7″ from $449, Apple Watch Series 1 $198, iPhone 7/Plus w/ $250 GC, more

As Black Friday approaches, the 9to5Toys team has been working diligently to find the best deals leading up to the biggest deal day of the year. While the Toys team covers all of the big deals and new gear from the retailers you trust, we’re paying particular attention to Apple Deals here.

First, you’ll want to be sure that you’re following 9to5Toys on Twitter, RSS and Facebook for all of the latest deals as they pop up. This is important because retailers have gotten tricky with their Black Friday deals and the best deals often only last minutes at a time. Second, you don’t want to leave your computer on Black Friday. The best deals are online. Waiting in lines and wrestling HDTVs from Black Friday Deal shoppers is for suckers.

As you likely know, Apple rarely does Black Friday deals (although that may be changing!). However, third-party retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, B&H, eBay, Walmart, Target and others are offering aggressive discounts. Head below for a look at our top picks for the season so far…

Review: Kanex GoPower Watch is an ideal travel charger that can refuel Apple Watch over a weekend

Site default logo image

Kanex GoPower Watch is a handy portable battery pack that can charge your Apple Watch on-the-go without extra cables or adapters. That’s because it features an MFi (Apple certified) Apple Watch magnetic charger on the battery pack, which makes it an all-in-one solution. It’s rather pricey for a portable battery pack at $99, but it gets the job done if you want the most convenient way to power your Apple Watch over a weekend away from electricity.
