History

The original Apple Watch (later called Series 0) was released on April 24, 2015, after years of rumors. While there was a lot of initial hype around it, the third-party watchOS apps were slow to launch due to API limitations. Native apps were available in watchOS 2. The original watch came in 38mm and 42mm sizes.

The Series 2 Watch was released on September 16th, 2016 along with a Series 1 Watch. The Series 2 included the S2 chip, built-in GPS, and water-proof construction. The Series 1 included the S2, but lacked GPS and waterproofing.

The Series 3 Watch was released on September 22, 2017, and it included an LTE option and the S3 chip. The Series 4 Watch was released on September 21, 2018. New hardware included the S4 Chip, Electrical heart sensor w/ ECG app, and larger display (40mm and 44mm sizes).

Apple Watch Series 5 was announced during Apple’s fall event on September 10, 2019. Customers were able to purchase the device later that day, and it was released on September 20. The headline feature for this model was the wearable’s always-on display. The new display always shows the time and complications and is also the first from the company to include a built-in compass.

Apple launched international emergency services to every cellular model. Series 5 also brought back ceramic white, and new natural brush and space black titanium models.

Apple Watch Series 6 was unveiled on September 15, 2020 at the “Time Flies” event alongside the more affordable SE and new iPad Air. New features of the Series 6 include blood oxygen monitoring, new watch colors, faster S6 chip, new watch faces, and more.

Apple releases watchOS 3.1 to the public with bug fixes, update through iPhone Watch app

Apple has today released watchOS 3.1 to the public, the newest operating system release for Apple Watch. watchOS 3.0 introduced many new features for the wearable, but sadly watchOS 3.1 is a much more subdued affair. watchOS 3.1 includes some small changes for Messages — you can now replay bubble and screen effects — as well as several issues related to Timer, Activity and Force Touch. The full release notes are included below. Anecdotally, watchOS 3.1 includes some noticeable improvements to battery life as well as the usual slew of bug fixes.

The release includes a critical fix for Apple Watch Series 2 owners that may have prevented the watch from charging. The update is available for all Apple Watch Series 2, Apple Watch Series 1 and first-generation Apple Watch models.

Apple Watch Nike+ availability: stores, countries and some bad news on bands announced

A quiet update to Apple’s website earlier revealed that the Apple Watch Nike+ edition would go on sale this Friday, October 28 – and Apple has now further confirmed the date with some additional details.

You’ll naturally be able to buy the special edition Watch at Apple Stores and ‘select’ Nike retail stores, but it will also be available at a number of specialty and department stores. Macy’s is no surprise as the Apple Watch has seen availability there already, but Apple says you’ll also be able to pick up the new Watch at DICK’S Sporting Goods stores …

A report from French site Mac4Ever claims that Apple is planning to close a high-profile Apple Watch store-within-a-store in the famous Galeries Lafayette department store in Paris. This is one of three department store initiatives Apple opened for the launch of the Watch back in 2015.

The Apple Watch area in the store is a large one, spanning the width of four full balconies in the upmarket store, sitting alongside fashion brands Chanel and Hermes …

In the month since publishing, I’ve noticed a few things worth following up with…

British Prime Minister bans Apple Watches from cabinet meetings over hacking fears

A pre-ban photo

The Telegraph reports that British government ministers have been banned from wearing Apple Watches during cabinet meetings, over fears that they could be hacked by the Russians.

Under David Cameron, several cabinet ministers wore the smart watches, including Michael Gove, the former Justice Secretary. However, under Theresa May ministers have been barred from wearing them amid concerns that they could be used by hackers as listening devices

The previous Prime Minister, David Cameron, allowed the Watches to be worn in the high-level meetings, and the change of policy is attributed to recently-installed PM Theresa May …

Feature Request: Apple Watch Activity rest days, tolerance levels, and an honor system

Really good fitness and health tracking is easily my number one reason for wearing my Apple Watch everyday (and upgrading to Series 2), and I really appreciate the new Activity Sharing features in watchOS 3 and iOS 10. Filling Activity rings and keeping a streak going is really effective motivation for me.

But breaking a streak or not quite filling an Activity ring can be equally uninspiring. It’s tempting to want to give up or take it less seriously, especially if you almost had it or the stream was broken by error. That happened to me this week, which prompted me to think about three things I’d love to see Apple’s Activity app gain: rest days, tolerance levels, and an honor system.

PSA: The Apple Watch Series 1 is just as fast as Series 2 [Video]

Site default logo image

There seems to be a bit of confusion about the differences between the Apple Watch Series 1 and Series 2. To be sure, there are several differences between the two. We addressed these in our previous Apple Watch walkthrough, but speed isn’t among those differences.

The point is, if you’re just looking for a faster, more agile Apple Watch, then you’ll be happy with any of the watches that you can currently buy from Apple. The company has discontinued the original, notoriously slow Apple Watch (Series 0), so anything you purchase in store or online will be one of the new, faster models.

Apple Watch: How to enable and spice up watchOS 3 screenshots [Video]

Unlike previous versions of watchOS, the ability to take screenshots is disabled by default in watchOS 3. Screenshots are disabled due to the fact that the screenshot-taking shortcut overlaps functionality used by the Workout app.

In watchOS 3, it’s possible to stop and start in-progress workouts by pressing the Digital Crown and Side button simultaneously. It just so happens that this is the exact same gesture used to take Apple Watch screenshots.

New York’s Union Square Cafe will use Apple Watches to enhance customer service

New York’s Union Square Cafe will use Apple Watches to enhance its customer service efforts when the restaurant re-opens next month, reports Eater.

When Meyer’s 30-year-old Union Square Cafe reopens in Manhattan next month, every floor manager and sommelier will be wearing an Apple Watch. And when a VIP walks through the front door, someone orders a bottle of wine, a new table is seated, a guest waits too long to order her or his drink, or a menu item runs out, every manager will get an alert via the tiny computer attached to their wrist.

The restaurant – owned by Shake Shack founder Danny Meyer – is working with reservation system startup Resy to deliver a hi-tech approach to the entire restaurant experience, from reservation to check …
