iOS 10

See All Stories

As is typical, Apple unveiled iOS 10 in June of 2016 during its Worldwide Developer Conference, releasing the first developer beta on the same day. iOS 10 includes a host of new features and interface changes, including new Message features, widgets, a redesigned Control Center, a new Music app, and much more.

Headlining the iOS 10 update are a variety of new features coming to the Messages app. Users now have the ability to send messages with effects like “Slam” or “Invisible Ink,” while they can also send them with a background like Shooting Stars, Confetti, or Balloons. There’s also support for a GIF keyboard, a new image selection interface, and easily sending Apple Music songs.

Additionally, iOS 10 includes a redesigned lock screen. Gone is the iconic “Slide to Unlock” message. Instead, users are now told to “Press home to unlock,” which Apple says will ensure that users are no longer blowing past notifications that they need to see.

There is also support for widgets in iOS 10, which can be accessed by swiping to the left on the lock screen or homescreen. Widgets show brief snippets of information like Activity progress, Reminders, and Stocks.

Photos has also received a major overhaul. Advanced Computer Vision brings insanely accurate object, scene, and face recognition, while it also searches locally on device to search photos for Memories to resurface trips and highlight certain dates.

The Music app also received an overhaul in iOS. The Connect tab is nowhere to be found, with Connect content now being integrated into the For You tab. There’s support for lyrics at long last, as well. In terms of design changes, the fonts are much bigger and bolder and the Now Playing screen has also be refreshed.

iOS 10 is currently in developer beta and will launch in public beta in July. The operating system will launch to the general public alongside the iPhone 7 this fall.

Apple releases iOS 10.1 and watchOS 3.1 beta seeds for developers (tvOS 10.0.1 too)

Apple has just seeded the first iOS 10.1 beta for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. This follows the public release of iOS 10 from just last week. It has also seeded the first update to watchOS 3; watchOS 3.1. There is also a bug fix for tvOS being seeded; tvOS 10.0.1.

iOS 10.1 includes the bokeh depth-of-field Portrait feature for the iPhone 7 Plus, which allows users to take pictures of people and have the phone synthetically blur the background. The public beta for iOS 10.1 will be available on Friday, so more people can try out the iPhone 7 Plus ‘special sauce’.

Facebook’s Messenger app now supports CallKit on iOS 10, brings VoIP calling to CarPlay

Site default logo image

iOS 10 lets third-party developers use the standard call look and feel from the Phone app in their own apps with something known as CallKit, and Facebook’s latest update to Messenger is already taking advantage of it. Messenger for iOS has let you make calls over the Internet to your friends for a while, and now incoming calls to Messenger will behave just like standard phone calls. This improved behavior even extends to CarPlay.

Apple frantically removing potentially NSFW terms from iMessage GIF search after initial oversight

Site default logo image

As Jeff detailed in his massive how-to earlier this week, the biggest changes in iOS 10 came with the all-new Messages app. One of the most highly-anticipated features was support for built-in GIF search, which pulls in GIFs from a variety of outside sources. As with any instance of pulling images in from third-party sources, there are bound to be a few inappropriate ones that slip through the cracks, and iOS 10’s GIF search is no different.

iOS 10 How-To: Hate pressing the home button to unlock? Change this setting on Touch ID iPhones and iPads

iOS 10 includes a lot of new stuff, from a revamped Messages app to a redesigned Apple Music experience. While most of it is superior to iOS 9, there are some choices that are more questionable. iOS 10 updates the lock screen with a new widgets view, but it also removes the iconic Slide to Unlock feature.

Unlocking an iPhone now requires a physical press on the Home Button by default. However, there is a nifty setting to make the iPhone act more like iOS 9 if you have Touch ID, called “Rest Finger to Open”. This trick works with any iPhone or iPad that has a Touch ID Home button …

iOS 10: How to use stickers, iMessages apps, Digital Touch, rich links, and more in the new Messages app [Video]

Site default logo image

The Messages app is the most frequently used app on iOS, so it makes sense that Apple would lend it plenty of attention in iOS 10. It’s safe to say that the stock Messages app received, by far, the most significant overhaul of all default apps in iOS 10, as it is now a feature-laden package that leverages photos, videos, and Snapchat-inspired markup elements.

Messages in iOS 10 even brings about a dedicated iMessage App Store for adding additional functionality such as stickers, animated GIFs and third-party app extensions that run right within the Messages app interface. Updated emoji features, inline music and video playback, and brand new effects add a new dimension to Apple’s most popular iOS app.

How I made two ridiculous iOS 10 sticker packs for Messages without any coding experience

Site default logo image

Way back at WWDC in June, Apple demoed how easy it is to open Xcode and create an iOS 10 sticker pack for Messages. Unlike iMessage apps, you don’t need to be a developer or know any code. You just need a Mac with Xcode, a paid developer account, and an idea for a sticker pack.

I’ve had a paid developer account since iOS 5 beta, but I’ve never submitted an app or opened Xcode for anything meaningful before. I’m definitely not a developer so I wanted to put Apple’s pitch to the test and see just how easy it is to create sticker packs.

I’m happy to report today that my ridiculous idea for two sticker packs was a success and both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump sticker packs are available on the App Store.

iOS 10 update bricking iPhones and iPads for some users, requires iTunes to restore [Update: fixed?]

Update: Apple has released a statement saying that the following iOS 10 update issues should now be resolved:

We experienced a brief issue with the software update process, affecting a small number of users during the first hour of availability. The problem was quickly resolved and we apologize to those customers. Anyone who was affected should connect to iTunes to complete the update or contact AppleCare for help.

iOS 10 has just dropped but it seems like it is not smooth sailing for everyone. We have received many reports that users are finding their iPhone and iPad devices ‘bricked’ after attempting the over-the-air iOS 10 update. To restore, affected users must then plug their devices into iTunes on Mac or PC to restore the device.

Details are sparse at this time but the issue appears to be related to the fact that the OTA attempts to download iOS 10.0 and then iTunes updates to iOS 10.0.1. We are tracking the story and will update if we hear any more details about this issue.
