Apple has announced the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus alongside the iPhone X at its September event.

The iPhone 8 models bring some solid upgrades over the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus including a new processor, wireless charging, upgraded cameras, a new glass back, and more.

Both the iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and X feature the A11 Bionic processor. The all new chip has four efficiency cores that are up to 70% faster than A10 Fusion and two performance cores that are up to 25% faster. The new models also have an Apple designed GPU that offers up to 30% better performance than the A10 chip.

Apple: iPhone 8 & iPhone X include ‘hardware updates’ to handle battery & throttling issues

Earlier today, Apple issued a response to inquisitions from Senator John Thune regarding its iPhone battery debacle. Apple explained in the response that it is “considering” offering rebates to those customers who paid full price for battery replacements.

The letter, shared in full by Business Insider, also offers some additional details on whether or not iPhone 8 and iPhone X users could soon be plagued by the same throttling…

Report: iPhone 8, 8 Plus and X accounted for 61% of US iPhone sales in Q4

Apple’s new 2017 iPhone models – iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X – made up for about 61% of iPhone sales in the United States, according to a new consumer study from CIRP. This is lower than the 72% share iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus took in the same quarter a year ago.

Comparisons to the 2016 cycle are difficult due to the staggered debut of the (higher priced) iPhone X in November, but it seems like older iPhone models sold better than usual during the holiday season.

Report: Apple suppliers easing off iPhone production following peak holiday season, iPhone 8 orders less than expected

Apple suppliers will be lowering component manufacturing for iPhone X, iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus in the first quarter of this year following the peak holiday season. Via Digitimes, lower orders are mostly from seasonality trends but some sources noted that iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 sales have not been as strong as expected and are ‘dragging down’ iPhone X momentum in terms of overall iPhone production.

iPhone 8 component orders apparently began falling off during the final months of 2017 which is unusual for flagship iPhone sales. However, even Apple admitted on its last earnings call that it doesn’t really know how customers would react to a three flagship iPhone product mix, so comparisons to expectations may not be significant.

iPhone X outsold by iPhone 8 and 8 Plus combined during first month of availability

While Apple has yet to breakdown just how many iPhone X units it has sold so far, that hasn’t stopped analysts from taking a stab at it. Today, Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) is out with a new investor note in which it attempts to offer some color on the breakdown of how each iPhone model sold during the first month of iPhone X availability…

Analytics data shows iPhone X rocketing ahead of the iPhone 8 & 8 Plus – but not both combined

Data from Mixpanel indicates that sales of this year’s flagship iPhone X quickly overtook both the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus, but not the two combined.

Using analytics data captured from apps that use Mixpanel’s software developer kit, the firm was able to see that the iPhone X now makes up 4.76% of all iPhone users. This puts it ahead of the iPhone 8 Plus at 3.59% …

Consumer Reports ranks iPhone 8/8 Plus over iPhone X after battery and durability differences

Consumer Reports has published its 2017 iPhone comparison and in it the publication has somehow rated the iPhone X below the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, but there’s certainly no need to trade down if you’re an iPhone X owner. While there’s nothing wrong with either iPhone 8 model, CR points to differences in battery life and durability testing for its ranking that may not apply to real world usage.

Early testing shows 7.5W ‘fast’ wireless charging has small effect on Qi charging speed

The iOS 11.2 betas include support for faster 7.5 watt wireless charging; the current public releases of iOS 11 limit iPhone 8 and iPhone X to 5W Qi wireless charging only. However, what is the practical impact of this change? Early testing shows that the improvements in charging speed using a 7.5 W charger is very slight.

iOS 11.2 enables 7.5W wireless charging for iPhone 8 and iPhone X

Update: We have tested wireless charging speeds running the latest iOS 11.2 beta and have been unable to notice a meaningful difference in how quickly the iPhone 8 charged on a 7.5 watt Qi charger compared to a  5w Qi charger.

The release of iOS 11.2 will bring faster wireless charging speeds for Apple’s latest iPhones: iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X (via MacRumors).

Right now, all wireless charging on the 2017 iPhones runs at a maximum of 5 watts. The update will unlock 7.5 watt Qi charging for the Belkin BOOST UP Wireless Charging Pad and Mophie Wireless Charging Base.

Comment: Apple’s earnings report & guidance show that its three-model strategy has paid-off

The run-up to the launch of the iPhone X has been a long one. We got the first sure-fire clue that Apple was shaking up its iPhone line with last year’s iPhone 7. Instead of the familiar tick-tock pattern of a new design one year and new internals the following year, the iPhone 7 was a second tock: a relatively minor external refresh of the iPhone 6 design.

That was, of course, an interim move while Apple got the iPhone X ready for launch. But instead of two new models this year, we got three.

There were many who wondered whether Apple knew what it was doing …

Analysts expecting Apple’s Q4 revenue to be bang in the middle of company’s forecast

Apple is due to report its fiscal Q4 (calendar Q3) earnings later today, and Wall Street analysts expect the company to report revenue bang in the middle of the company’s guidance.

Perhaps reflecting the fact that it was difficult even for Apple to judge how many people would buy the iPhone 8 in September versus holding out for the iPhone X, the company gave unusually wide guidance this time around …

iPhone 8 sees Apple bounce back in China, sales up 40% after six quarters of decline

The iPhone 8 launch has seen Apple return to growth in China after six consecutive quarters of declining sales in the world’s most populous country. The report comes from Canalys, which says that iPhone sales grew by a dramatic 40% year-on-year.

The company says that Q3 sales, which include the iPhone 8, hits 11 million, up from 8M in the same quarter last year. However, warns the firm, that growth could be short-lived despite excitement about the iPhone X
