Getting ready for Yosemite: How to backup your Mac and set up OS X 10.10

Apple’s latest desktop operating system, OS X Yosemite, is available today. In this post, we’ll take you through the steps required to protect your data by backing it up, upgrading the OS, and getting started with the latest version of OS X.

Before you get started, you’ll want to make sure you have everything you need. To backup your data, you’ll need an external hard drive or a Time Capsule with at least the same amount of storage as your hard drive. You’ll also need to make sure your Mac is capable of running Yosemite (we’ll show you how below), and you’ll want to make sure you have an iTunes account to purchase the update.

Apple announces OS X Yosemite available today for free

After previewing OS X Yosemite for the second time since its WWDC event in July, Apple announced today that OS X 10.10 Yosemite will be available today through the Mac App Store [direct link when live] at no cost to users. Mac users running OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion and 10.9 Mavericks can upgrade can upgrade to 10.10 Yosemite, although newer hardware is required for some features. OS X Yosemite brings a redesigned look and feel to the Mac as well as several features like iCloud Drive, Handoff and Continuity, Notification Center widgets, and more.

Apple releases OS X Yosemite Public Beta 6 to match latest developer GM

Apple today released the sixth public beta of the upcoming OS X Yosemite to AppleSeed testers. The build number is 14A388b, which coincides with last week’s OS X Yosemite Golden Master Candidate 3.0 release for registered developers. Apple plans to provide final details on OS X Yosemite at the October 16th event, then release it as soon as later that date.

Apple releases beta version of OS X Server 4.0 for Yosemite to developers

Apple has just posted a pre-release build of OS X Server version 4.0 on its developer portal. The update is designed for systems running the upcoming OS X 10.10 Yosemite and has a build number of 14S323. The seed notes are below:

OS X Server 4.0 Developer Preview
OS X Server 4.0 Developer Preview 14S323 (app version 3.5.9) is now available for testing. This version is designed for OS X Yosemite and includes many new features and improvements.
Minimum System Requirements
To install OS X Server 4.0 Developer Preview 14S323, you need one of these computers:
• iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
• MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) • MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
• MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
• Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)

What’s New In OS X Server 4.0 Developer Preview Server Application
• OS X Server can perform network diagnostic tests to verify your server is accessible from the Internet. Network diagnostic tests verify reachability by checking your server’s host name, and service ports.
• Firewall and user/group-based service access controls can now be defined in the Access tab of Server pane. Access restrictions may be applied in multiple levels – for
all networks, local networks, this Mac, custom networks, and for specific users and groups.
File Sharing
• SMB 3 is the default protocol for sharing files in OS X Yosemite. SMB 3 helps protect against tampering and eavesdropping by encrypting and signing data “in-flight.” In addition to SMB 3, OS X Yosemite maintains support for SMB 2, AFP and SMB network file sharing protocols, automatically selecting the appropriate protocol as needed.
• SMB 3 provides end-to-end encryption to protect data and secure communication on untrusted networks. SMB 3 uses AES CCM for encryption to ensure communications between client and server are private.
• To guard against tampering, SMB 3 adds a signature to every packet transmitted over the wire. SMB 3 uses AES-CMAC to validate the integrity of the signature, ensuring the packets have not been intercepted, changed or replayed and that communication between hosts is authenticated and authorized.

Xsan
Configuration Instructions
• Create a SAN
• Start Xsan and create a new SAN. This machine will become an Xsan Controller.
• Joining a Controller to an existing SAN • Start Xsan and select to Join a SAN.
• Clients
• Use the “Save Configuration Profile” command available on the Xsan pane of Server App to add a client to the SAN and copy the profile to the client. Install the profile on clients by double-clicking the profile and following the installation process.

It’s happening: Apple has just announced a keynote address for Thursday, October 16th to take place at the Town Hall auditorium on its Infinite Loop Campus in Cupertino, California. Invitations to select members of the media and special guests indicate that the event will, as always, begin at 10 AM Pacific time/1 PM Eastern Time. News of the October 16th date broke last week. Apple reportedly set to hold iPad/iMac/Yosemite event on October 16th at Town Hall

Re/code reports that Apple will hold its October event, featuring iPads, on October 16th. According to John Paczkowski, the event will feature updates to Apple’s iPad line, OSX 10.10 Yosemite as well as the new Retina iMacs that we reported on earlier this week. Mac mini updates would be nice too.

The event will also feature Yosemite, assumedly the OS will be released soon after the event, if Apple follows historic patterns.

Apple releases fourth beta of iTunes 12 to developers and AppleSeed users on Yosemite

Apple has pushed out the fourth pre-release version of iTunes 12 to users running the developer preview or public beta of OS X Yosemite. The update weighs in at 214 MB, but the seed notes don’t list anything new in this build. There do appear to be some new icons in the preferences screen, but for the most part it’s the same as the other betas we’ve seen.

Yosemite GM includes support for SMS Forwarding when paired with iOS 8.1 beta

When iOS 8.0 launched, it shipped without support for SMS Forwarding, one of the many “Continuity” features that were demonstrated to work between iOS devices and Macs running OS X Yosemite. The reason for this was fairly simple: there was no need to include the feature if Yosemite was not yet available to the public.

Earlier this week Apple delivered the first beta version of iOS 8.1 to developers. Aside from a few design tweaks, not a whole lot of changes were visible, though there were references and initial support for Apple Pay, indicating that this would be the update to enable that feature. Now it seems the update will also activate the SMS Forwarding function.

Yosemite GM provides an early look at new versions of Pages and Keynote for Mac

On Tuesday Apple provided developers and beta testers with the GM build of OS X Yosemite, which will likely be the version that ships to consumers later in October (although since this is only a “GM candidate” we may see another build sometime before then). Earlier we noted that this build includes updated videos to demonstrate the trackpad gestures in System Preferences that showed off new iWork icons.

As it turns out, those demo videos also give us a quick look at what will almost certainly be the next major version of Apple’s iWork suite. Above you can see an unreleased version of Pages that features a redesigned toolbar and other tweaks. Another of the videos has our first look at the updated Keynote app:

Apple has released OS X Yosemite GM Candidate 1.0 for developers via the Mac App Store today. Candidate 1.0 of OS X Yosemite GM follows the release of the first iOS 8.1 beta to developers yesterday and Yosemite Developer Preview 8 two weeks ago. Apple is expected to debut to the new version of the Mac operating system to the public next month. Apple’s new icons for Yosemite’s Mac App Store

Apple made a minor over-the-air change to the Mac App Store today on OS X Yosemite. The company updated the icons to be more in line with the new design aesthetic. The top bar is the new version, while the bottom is the old one that can still be seen on OS X Mavericks. The new icons also better match up with those on the iOS version. Apple will launch Yosemite next month for free.

Apple invites AppleSeed users to participate in AirDrop ‘test fest’ in preparation for Yosemite release next month

Apple has invited a number of non-developer users to participate in what it’s calling an “AirDrop Test Fest” to help fix bugs in the over-the-air file sharing system, according to users who have gotten the invite. Users who have been invited will find a notice inside the Feedback Assistant application included with the public beta of the upcoming OS X Yosemite.

Users who have been invited to participate are provided with a set of guidelines for testing the feature. According to the notice, users will need two Macs capable of running Yosemite and AirDrop, or one Mac running Yosemite and one running Mavericks to test the “legacy” feature. An iOS device isn’t required to participate, indicating that the focus will be on Mac-to-Mac transfers rather than cross-platform ones.

In line with previous rumors, Apple said to be preparing iPad Air 2 for October launch

As has been previously rumored, Apple is said to be preparing for an October event to introduce an updated model of the iPad Air, according to the Commercial Times. Though earlier rumors of an event on October 21st have been shot down, there are still plenty of other days in October that Apple could hold the event.

In fact, the company is already expected to announce and release OS X Yosemite next month, as indicated by notes on the iOS 8 website stating that the “SMS Relay” feature (which requires OS X 10.10) will be available at that time.

iPhone 6 and 6 Plus support faster charging, but ship with slower power adapter

Update: We’ve rounded up some nice 2.1A AC/Car charger and battery upgrade options for the iPhone 6/Plus

Apple has apparently enabled much faster battery charging in the newest iPhone models, but you’d never know it if you only use the included power adapter. According to a change in the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus discovered by iLounge, both of the new smartphones are equipped with the hardware to support 2.1A charging.

The problem? Apple only includes a 1A charger in the box. If you’ve been using that AC power adapter to recharge your phone, there’s a much faster way to do it. Since the iPad has long supported 2.1A charging, you can grab a charger for the Apple tablet and use that to achieve a much quicker charge.

Another way to benefit from this new capability is to plug your iPhone directly into a newer-model Mac, which will charge it at the appropriate speed. iLounge noted that the Macs tested for this feature were running Yosemite with no mention of OS X Mavericks, so it’s possible that the change may require the upcoming OS, which is currently is public beta.

Windows users get iCloud Drive support while Mac users await Yosemite

While developers are warning iOS 8 and Mac users to avoid upgrading to Apple’s new iCloud Drive feature before the release of OS X Yosemite, Windows users now have access with an updated iCloud for Windows utility released by Apple. With the update, Windows users can now view and edit content stored in iCloud Drive through File Explorer (via Ars Technica).

As for Mac users, Apple explains in its support document: “If you upgrade to iCloud Drive before OS X Yosemite is available, documents on your Mac won’t be kept up to date with documents on your devices with iOS 8, or on iCloud.com.” Apple allows users to upgrade to iCloud Drive on devices running iOS 8.

Windows users can download the latest iCloud for Windows here to access the new iCloud Drive features, while Mac users will have to wait for the OS X Yosemite release this fall.

New iCloud plans go live, up to 1 TB of storage space now available for purchase

Yesterday Apple revealed the finalized pricing for its revamped iCloud plans, but at the time they weren’t available for purchase. Today the plans have officially gone live for all customers. As you can see in the screenshot above, users can now buy up to 1 TB of storage space, which will cost $19.99 per month.

You can upgrade your current iCloud plan through the iCloud settings on your iOS device or Mac running an iCloud-compatible version of its operating system. Since the plans are account-based and not device-based, you’ll have access to all of that storage on all of your other devices, as well.

Apple is also refunding existing customers and automatically upgrading them:

We recently announced new, more affordable iCloud storage plans. As a thank you for being a current iCloud storage plan subscriber, we’ve increased your storage plan and you will be receiving a refund based on the reduced plan price.

Your plan has been upgraded from 15 GB of total storage at $20.00 a year to 20 GB at just $10.99 a year. You will receive a prorated refund of $0.52, which is based on the price reduction and the remaining months on your subscription. On September 30, 2014 this 20GB plan will automatically renew and you will be charged $10.99.

Apple sends out first beta of iCloud for Windows to AppleSeed users

Apple has started sending out invitations to AppleSeed users inviting them to take advantage of a new beta seed for Windows, as shown in the screenshot above. The beta will enable features that would normally be reserved for OS X Yosemite or iOS 8, such as iCloud Drive, on the Microsoft-built operating system.

Developers were previously able to download this software for testing, but this is the first time that non-developer users have been granted access. Only a limited number of applicants have been added to this program so far, it seems.

Apple says Yosemite and iOS 8 beta 4 and older will lose CloudKit functionality tomorrow

Apple has sent an email developers alerting them to the fact that certain older betas of iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite will no longer be able to take advantage of CloudKit functions like MailDrop, iCloud Photo Library, or iCloud Drive. This is likely due to an older sandbox server being taken offline as the operating systems come closer to reaching their public releases.

Developers who wish to keep testing against these features will need to update to at least beta 5 of each operating system. CloudKit and its various applications are part of iOS 8 and Yosemite, which will be required for all users who wish to use these functions when they are released later this fall.

Apple will unveil its next-generation iPhone 6 in just over two weeks. The two new devices are expected to ship with iOS 8 pre-installed.

The update is available via Software Update on the Mac App Store for those running the initial beta release; the first beta was released at the end of July. It appears Public Beta 2 is nearly the same build as the Developer Preview 6 (build r, up from f) released to Yosemite developers earlier this week. Apple activates screen sharing over iMessage accounts in latest Yosemite beta

In June, we noted that Apple is adding a handy new feature to the upcoming OS X Yosemite: the ability for iMessage/Apple ID users to screen share via the Messages app. Screen sharing was a hallmark of early versions of Apple’s Mac “iChat” application, but it has always required an Aol Instant Messenger (AIM), Gmail, Jabber, or Yahoo account. With Yosemite, users can have the same screen sharing experience with just an iMessage/FaceTime/or Apple ID account. Apple activated the feature in this week’s beta release, and it brings some new tricks not found in earlier implementations:

Apple adds 3D Yosemite Flyover to Maps ahead of new OS X

Apple has steadily been adding new cities and locations with support for its 3D Flyover feature to its Maps app this year. The latest Flyover addition to Apple Maps includes support for two new locations: Wellington, New Zealand and Yosemite National Park, California. The addition of Wellington marks the third location in New Zealand to support Flyover with Auckland and Christchurch both previously being supported. Newly added 3D Flyover support for Yosemite National Park in California is especially notable though as Apple prepares to ship its redesigned Mac operating system named after the national park…
