WWDC has come and gone once again, and it’s going to be a fun summer monitoring the betas to see how everything with the latest versions of iOS, macOS, and tvOS progress. As I was pondering the newest ways to improve Apple device management, I concluded that Apple’s MDM APIs for vendors to build on top of is a key part of why Apple devices in the enterprise continue to provide a great user experience.

HomeKit Weekly: Revisiting my review of the eufyCam Pro highlights the benefits of the eufy platform

EufyCam Pro

I am officially moved out of my house into temporary living quarters while our new house is finished up. My Home app is in chaos as almost everything is offline. I am slowly getting a few essential HomeKit items back up and running in our temporary spot. However, one of the items I sold with the house was my beloved eufyCam Pro. As I wrote a few weeks ago, I am switching to the Nest Cam with Floodlight for the new house due to a continuous recording option. As I said goodbye to it, I want to give my parting thoughts for one of the best outdoor HomeKit camera options.

HomeKit Weekly: CozyLife undercuts other manufacturers with a two-pack of low-profile HomeKit outlet adaptors for less than $20

HomeKit Outlet Adaptor

If you’re starting from scratch with HomeKit, it can look expensive to get started. There are so many devices with different features that you might be concerned about what to buy. However, if you’re new to HomeKit, I’ve got the perfect device to start with: a switched outlet. I recently tested a new low-cost HomeKit compatible outlet adaptor that is less than $20 for a two-pack, and it’s the perfect way to get started with HomeKit.

Apple @ Work: Apple’s commitment to supporting older devices with software upgrades is critical for enterprises with Macs, iPhones, and iPads

Now that Apple’s World Wide Developers Conference has come and gone another year, the summer news cycle will all be about iOS 16, the new features for macOS, what’s new with Apple TV, and rumors about the upcoming fall device releases. Those who manage Apple devices at work will be a season of testing, testing, and more testing. Apple’s old device support commitment with software updates for years to come has been part of the reason iOS and macOS have remained one of the most secure computing platforms.

Apple @ Work: The iPad goes where no Mac has gone before, so it’s time to stop comparing them

iPad vs Mac

We’re 12 years into the iPad industry, and it was the last product line that Steve Job introduced at Apple. Over the years, the iPad has been positioned in various ways by Apple, with the latest being the “What’s a Computer” ad campaign from 2017. The iPad and Mac have had this somewhat awkward coexistence. The Mac has seen somewhat of a renaissance, while the iPad has gotten more expensive on the high end. In recent conversations with businesses who use both, I wanted to take time today to appreciate the iPad in a new light. Comparing iPad vs Mac is the wrong discussion. The reality is that you need to consider each device’s unique benefits.

HomeKit Weekly: Even renters can enjoy smart home products that are easy to install… and remove

As I’ve mentioned a few times, my family is in the process of building a home, so I’ve documented some of my HomeKit plans in previous articles. For the moment, I am debt-free since we’ve sold our current home, but our new house won’t be finished until October.

We’re in the final days of this home, so we’re moving into a temporary living situation for the summer. So many HomeKit products and projects assume you’re the homeowner and can easily mount items, drill home, etc. Today, I want to consider some beneficial HomeKit setups for renters.

Apple @ Work: Gatekeeper on macOS ensures safety and security on all apps – even non–App Store apps

In Apple’s dream world, the only way to install apps on macOS would be through the Mac App Store. Apple loves the control that the app store model gives them, but they also love the security it brings users. On iOS, Apple got its wish with an App Store-only world (for now), but it’s not possible on macOS as sandboxing isn’t possible on many different types of applications. So in order to bring security and safety to Mac users everywhere, macOS Gatekeeper was invented, and it’s been a resounding success.

Smart Home Diary: Lack of continuous recording in HomeKit Secure Video has led me to Nest Cam with Floodlight

Nest Cam Floodlight

I’ve written about the home-building process a few times in the past. There’s something refreshing about “starting from scratch” with your home and deciding everything fresh. There’s also a benefit to rethinking the role of smart home technology in your life. How much is too much? Would it be easier to use a light switch here vs. a smart bulb? Do I really need that many cameras? For the next iteration of my smart home diary section of HomeKit Weekly, I want to explain why I picked a brand of cameras I never thought I’d go with a few months back. Let’s look at how I ended up choosing the Nest Cam with Floodlight for my outdoor cameras.

One of the aspects of Apple Business Essentials that is beneficial for enterprises using Apple is the included iCloud storage. However, many businesses already have an enterprise file sharing solution like Box, Google Drive, Dropbox, or OneDrive. I’d love to see Apple evolve its iCloud in the enterprise to tackle a new problem: Time Machine in the Cloud.

Apple @ Work: Why Apple Business Essentials isn’t a direct competitor to other MDM vendors

Apple Business Essentials is an important product for Apple. I’ve talked to many companies who manage Macs and iPads, and they’re not interested in the service. This is a good thing though. Apple isn’t looking to control 100% of the device management market. Companies like Kandji, Jamf, Mosyle, JumpCloud, and Addigy do a great job of enabling Apple to work great in the enterprise. The enemy of Apple Business Essentials isn’t other MDM vendors. It’s unmanaged devices.

When I learned about the public release of Apple Business Essentials, one of the questions I asked was if anything was new compared to the beta period. One key thing that Apple is adding is the ability to install apps, not from the Mac App Store. Apple said this was one of the most requested features from the beta period, and they plan to deliver it later this summer.
