I recently discussed Apple’s Endpoint Security API and praised it as a well-designed security implementation that allowed IT to have a stable fleet of devices while end-users have a great experience. This week, I wanted to highlight one of the most significant sources of “malware” on macOS and how to resolve it. One of the headline features of macOS Venture and iOS 16 was a few much-needed enhancements to Apple’s Mail app. I’ve long criticized the app for some serious upgrades as stagnant and much overdue; I even argued in the past that Apple developed a Mail.app Pro and rename the current app Mail.app Lite to keep the needs of business users separate from pro users. With Apple’s fall upgrades, Scheduled Send is finally built into macOS and iOS’s Mail app, but with a caveat that IT administrators will appreciate. In 2004, I listened to a presentation from the IT Director of the internet service provider I was doing call center technical support for, and he made a comment that has stuck with me to do this day: Security is easy if you don’t care about the end-user experience. Finding the balance between security and usability is the true goal. I’d argue that usability and experience is the primary way Apple has distinguished itself in the enterprise and why it continues to grow to this day. A great example of Apple balancing security and usability is its Endpoint Security API.

A whole subset of HomeKit device categories often goes under notice. When you think about smart home devices, you will generally think about cameras, lights, speakers, or a switch. The real genius of a smart home is when things can happen without you even thinking about them. There’s a device that I recently picked up that I think might end up being one of my favorite HomeKit devices. This week, I am looking at the Fibaro Multi-Sensor Motion Sensor for HomeKit

One thing that became perfectly clear in the past few years with Apple’s integrations at work is Active Directory binding is dead, and integration with Identity Providers is the future. While it’s not something I would have ever predicted a decade ago, Apple’s willingness to create APIs for other companies to manage the Mac login experience shows the company understands its role in the enterprise. This week, I want to look at why Apple’s enterprise expansion is going to continue to mature as it focuses on deep integration with other platforms.

When the lockdowns happened in 2020, schools rushed to virtual options to maintain some semblance of “business as usual.” There were unintended consequences, and that was to be expected. In our temporary living situation, I am without my normal HomeKit setup, so I’ve had to rethink what HomeKit products I want to reconfigure. Security has never been a more critical part of an IT department’s budget, time, and attention.
