Comment: Castro’s Inbox/Queue feature is game-changing functionality for heavy podcast users

Castro

I’ve written dozens of articles on 9to5Mac about podcast apps like Apple Podcasts, Pocket Casts, and Overcast. One of the challenges I’ve had during a period where I am getting out of the house less (no commutes to work, less travel, etc.) is keeping up with all of the podcasts I normally listen to in a given week. It has created a slight amount of stress in my life as new shows just keep showing up without the time to listen to them. A few weeks ago, I imported all of my podcasts into Castro to see if its Queue/Inbox functionality could help me “reclaim” my podcast inbox.

Apple @ Work: What are Apple’s plans for MDM now that it owns Fleetsmith?

Fleetsmith

For enterprise customers who use Apple, the week of WWDC brought some rather shocking news. Late in the week, first-party mobile device management (MDM) solution Fleetsmith announced Apple had purchased them for an undisclosed sum. There was a bit of controversy with the purchase, as Apple immediately discontinued Fleetsmith’s App Catalog without warning. This left a lot of customers in a bind as soon as they woke up that morning.

While the controversy has died off, I know many customers of Fleetsmith, Jamf, and others are wondering what Apple’s plans are now. Since the announcement, I’ve been thinking about what Apple might do in the future now that they own an MDM. Here are some ideas I came up with on what might happen in the future.

HomeKit Weekly: VOCOlinc PureFlow adds HomeKit compatibilities to a new category

VOCOlinc pureflow

When you think of HomeKit enabled products, most people think of light switches, cameras, and door locks. Have you ever considered what an air purifier with HomeKit would look like in your home? I hadn’t until I tried the VOCOlinc PureFlow Air Purifier, but it’s confirmed my thinking that I want everything in my house to controlled with HomeKit.

Review: Does Wondery Plus bring enough value to warrant the podcast service subscription?

Wondery Plus

I am very particular about podcasts, podcast apps, how to subscribe, and generally anything related to the podcast industry. I change my podcast app of choice on almost a weekly basis. I am passionate about all things podcasts. One trend that I’ve seen in 2020 is a move to premium podcasts for additional content. I subscribe to the premium version of ATP, Cortex, and many others. I love supporting my favorite shows to get additional content. For the past few weeks, I’ve spent some time with Wondery Plus. I’ve been a fan of many Wondery shows for quite a while, so I wanted to see what else they had to offer.

Apple @ Work: Addigy LiveDesktop could be a crucial addition for supporting remote workers

Addigy

It seems like every article I’ve written in the past few months has started regarding COVID–19. While I hate that I keep mentioning it, it is informing a lot of how I am thinking about business operations going forward. I recently did a deep dive into the Addigy mobile device management system, and I think it could be beneficial for companies moving to permanent work from home.

HomeKit Weekly: VOCOlinc door sensors are a low cost way to add HomeKit automations

Door sensors are a central part of any security system. I’ve written about my experience with abode in the past, and I use its door sensors for my primary Homekit triggers with automations as well as security alerts for entry. Since abode is monitored, I know that if a door is opened while I am gone, I’ll get an alert. But what do you get if you only want a door sensor for HomeKit automations or want an unmonitored alarm for entry? The VOCOlinc door sensor will fit your needs nicely if that is what you’re looking for.

Apple @ Work: What’s the impact of changing default apps on iOS for enterprise customers?

default apps iOS enterprise

WWDC 2020 has come and gone, and while there is a lot to unpack for the consumer side, there is a considerable amount to unpack on the enterprise side as well. One of my favorite slides of the entire keynote is where they show the grab bag features that didn’t make air time but are often very important. This year, one of the key things I noticed for enterprise and K–12 customers was the ability to set default email and browsers on iPad and iPhone. What does this mean for enterprise and K–12 customers as they look ahead to iOS 14?

HomeKit Weekly: Is OneLink Safe and Sound smoke and CO detector worth the steep price for AirPlay 2?

I have been eyeing the OneLink Safe and Sound for a few months now, and I decided to pull the trigger a few weeks ago and see what it’s like in day to day use. My house is seven years old, so I’ll be looking to replace all of the smoke detectors in the next few years, so if I wanted to go for a smart home route, I wanted to have time to spread out the purchases.

Apple @ Work: How an ex-Apple engineer went on to create an enterprise networking company

Ubiquiti

A few weeks ago, I wrote about how Apple killing the Xserve was step one in their plan to dominate the enterprise. Outside of the retired Xserve, they haven’t had any other enterprise networking products servers, they’ve never had an enterprise networking product, though. You might be interested to know that an ex-Apple employee went on to found a company that currently sells enterprise networking gear. Robert Pera, the founder of Ubiquiti, Incworked for Apple in the early 2000s as a Wi-Fi engineer.

HomeKit Weekly: HomeKit device firmware updates should move to the Home app

HomeKit excels as a platform because it allows you to tie together multiple products from different manufacturers across your home. This reality will enable you to use a motion sensor on one side of your house to trigger a light from a different manufacturer somewhere else in your home. My biggest complaint about HomeKit is that I have a string of third-party manufacturer’s apps on iPhone that are solely used for firmware updates. What should Apple do to fix this?

Parallels Mac Management 8.5 adds iPad and iPhone Management to Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager

Many people only know Parallels for their virtualization software to run Windows on macOS, but they make a suite of tools for server management as well. They have a popular plugin to add Apple support to Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager that allows enterprises to have a unified management system for all of their devices. Today, the company is releasing Parallels Mac Management 8.5 which includes free management of Apple iPads and iPhones in Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager until the end of 2020.

Apple acquires Fleetsmith to enhance iPhone, iPad, and Mac enterprise features

Fleetsmith

Mobile Device Management is at the heart of every Apple enterprise customer’s network stack. Up until now, Apple has generally relied on third party companies when enabling its customer to deploy, secure, and manage devices in the corporate environment. Today, Fleetsmith announced they have been acquired by Apple. This acquisition will give Apple a first-party MDM solution to offer its customer.

Comment: What new features for Apple Podcasts should be copied from third-party apps?

Apple Podcasts

Apple Podcasts is one of the premier places to find, subscribe, and listen to podcasts. It’s not a perfect app, though. In my quest to find the perfect podcast app (it doesn’t exist), I’ve realized that there are a handful of features from third-party podcast apps that Apple should copy for Apple Podcasts. What new features of Apple Podcasts should be copied from existing third-party podcast apps? As we look ahead to WWDC 2020, we already have some advanced information on what’s coming to Apple Podcasts, but here are my ideas for the future.

Commencement Speeches For The Class of 2020

Podcast of the Week: Commencement – Speeches For The Class of 2020

COVID–19 took graduation away from millions of high school and college seniors, and that really saddens me. I have fond memories of the final few weeks of high school finishing up my senior baseball season, senior prom, class night, and more. For these students, they won’t have those memories. They’ll have memories of social distancing and distance learning instead.
