Report claims Walmart will never accept Apple Pay because it perpetuates high credit card fees

Walmart Apple Pay

Walmart is one of several high-profile retailers that belong to MCX, a consortium of retailers that have partnered together to create their own mobile payments service called CurrentC. Due to this commitment, the big-box retailer has opted against supporting Apple Pay in its stores. A new report offers a big reason why: high credit card transaction fees.

iPad mini in Silver or Space Gray: $199 shipped or pickup at Walmart ($50 off)

From 9to5Toys.com:

Apple-iPad-mini-2

Today only, Walmart offers Apple’s iPad mini (non-Retina) in new condition either Space Gray or Silver for $199 shipped or ship to store. That’s $50 off Apple’s current price (though Walmart mistakenly says $100 off last year’s price) and tied with the lowest price we’ve ever seen. A nice pickup for the same price as the iPod touch. Features:

  • 7.9-inch LED-backlit display
  • A5 chip
  • 5MP iSight camera with 1080p HD video recording
  • FaceTime camera
  • Up to 10 hours of battery life *
  • Built-in Wi-Fi (802.11a/b/g/n)

These often sell out pretty quickly so you might want to jump in early.

Report claims steel Apple Watch to start at $500, gold model between $4-5K

apple-watch-edition

French website iGen.fr, which has provided reliable information in the past, reported on Tuesday that the steel Apple Watch will start at $500 alongside a gold model that will retail for between $4,000 and $5,000. Apple previously claimed at its September event that the Apple Watch would start at $349, but did not disclose further pricing information.

The report claims that the stainless steel Apple Watch in polished steel or black will cost $500, while the gold Apple Watch Edition will be the more expensive version at between $4,000 and $5,000. That price range would be nearly half the estimated $10,000 price that some other reports have suggested.

Microsoft hits MacBook Air with Yoga 3 dance ad (Video)

[youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R98sgmllCEg]

It’s an epic dance-off between the new Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro and the MacBook Air. But does the MacBook Air stand a chance against the sleekness and multi-mode flexibility of the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro? Nope. And once you add the touchscreen, it’s game over. The Yoga 3 Pro proves there’s more than one way to do what you want. Learn more at http://www.microsoft.com/yoga.

To me, it is interesting to see Microsoft taking the underdog approach. Desktop PCs [read: Microsoft Windows computers] still have huge market share but have been declining while MacBooks continue to grow every quarter. The ultraportable market is where the MacBook Air is the incumbent.

The MacBook Air hasn’t been updated dramatically in quite some time so Microsoft sees perhaps a weakness?

In Apple’s defense, this is a $1300 starting price computer which goes up against the starting $899 price of a MacBook Air, the Yoga’s bezels are huge, battery life is shorter and there is always the OS X vs. Windows arguement.  But hey, it looks like a nice computer.

iOS and Android combine to capture 96% global market share in Q3

iPhone 6 Nexus

The latest numbers from Strategy Analytics reveal that iOS and Android combined to capture 96% global market share in the third quarter. iOS and Android accounted for 12.3% market share and 83.6% global market share respectively for the three-month period ending September. Those figures arrive just one day after the research firm reported that Chinese company Xiaomi has become the third-largest smartphone maker in the world.

Android continued to be a dominant player in global smartphone operating system market share, increasing its lead over iOS by three percentage points compared to the year-ago quarter. Apple’s mobile operating system held 12.3% market share during the third quarter, trailed by Windows Phone (3.3%) and BlackBerry (0.7%). Other mobile platforms accounted for less than 0.1% market share.

MCX: Merchants accepting both CurrentC and Apple Pay ‘entirely possible’ in the future

Apple Pay CurrentC

Earlier this week, retailers CVS and Rite Aid blocked NFC payments at their stores following the launch of Apple Pay because of their existing commitment to MCX’s CurrentC platform. Nevertheless, MCX CEO Dekkers Davidson assures that merchants accepting both CurrentC and Apple Pay “could be entirely possible” in the future.

The blockade has ignited somewhat of a controversy between Apple Pay and MCX, only worsened by the fact that it was confirmed that CurrentC suffered a security breach earlier this morning. MCX, or Merchant Customer Exchange, consists of a number of high-profile retailers that grouped together to work on their own CurrentC contactless payments platform.
