Patent granted for health sensors, cameras, batteries & more in Apple Watch bracelet links

Site default logo image

A patent granted to Apple today describes how the company could use a modular Watch bracelet to add functionality. Each link could perform a separate function, with owners able to add as many active links as needed.

In one or more embodiments, a method for utilizing functional components of band system for a wearable device may include: receiving identifiers at a wearable device from multiple modular functional band links connected to the wearable device, determining functionality available via the multiple modular functional band links utilizing the received identifiers, and communicating with one of the multiple modular functional band links to utilize the determined functionality.

While the patent uses the usual broad terminology – suggesting that the modules might offer everything from cameras to additional power – Tim Cook has already hinted at the most likely application of the technology …

Poll: What Apple product category should the company refresh next?

Site default logo image

In terms of major product refreshes, 2016 was rather light in the grand scheme of things. The MacBook Pro saw its first major refresh towards the end of the year, and 2017 will likely see the same treatment towards the rest of the Mac lineup, the iPhone the iPad, and maybe more.

Looking towards 2017 and beyond, what product line should Apple update next? Or should its next move be a new product category altogether?

WatchPlayer: Play podcast episodes directly from the Apple Watch speaker [Video]

Site default logo image

WatchPlayer is a free app that allows you to transfer full podcast episodes to the Apple Watch for offline playback. That means you can leave the house without your iPhone and listen to your favorite shows while on-the-go.

The app isn’t the prettiest from a design perspective and podcast file transfers to the Apple Watch are slow, but it’s one of the easiest ways to play podcast episodes on the Apple Watch without an iPhone. The app even affords the ability to listen to your favorite episodes directly from the Apple Watch speaker — no headphones required. Have a look at our hands-on video walkthrough inside for more details.

Apple Watch, New Year’s resolutions, and losing 50 pounds

Site default logo image
apple-watch-nike-2-1

Last New Year’s Day I decided to start eating healthy, exercising daily, and filling the Activity Rings on my Apple Watch as a way to get in shape. I broke my New Year’s resolution by January 4, but I started again on April 1 and ultimately lost over 50 pounds in 2016.

Apple Watch didn’t lose the weight for me — it took a lot of dedication and really changing my lifestyle — but the fitness tracking features and Apple’s Activity app helped quantify my effort without me doing too little or going overboard.

Apple Watch has absolutely been an effective motivational coach that has pushed me toward my goal of being more active. Below I’ll detail my experience and share some of what I’ve learned along my journey.

Comment: AirPods emphasize the need for better Apple Music syncing, podcast playback with Apple Watch

Site default logo image

AirPods are finally here and early customers who can find stock seem to be largely happy with the purchase. Setup is nearly instant, sound quality is better than expected, and totally wireless earbuds that switch between all your devices is super convenient.

Apple’s new W1 chip makes setup and switching so easy that a lot of Apple Watch wearers are probably pairing earphones to the watch for the first time. It happens automatically over iCloud after you pair with another device using your account so some people may not even realize it’s happening.

When you do realize you can play content directly from the Apple Watch to AirPods without relying on your iPhone, finding something to play and knowing how to play it can be rather cumbersome. AirPods really emphasize the Apple Watch’s need to improve at the basics like syncing Apple Music, podcasts, and other audio…

Niantic plans for Pokémon Go app for Apple Watch (Updated)

[ed. note: We got this one wrong. We had heard a similar story to the reddit post from a 3rd party that was working with Niantic on the Pokemon Go Watch.  That person explained that Niantic was focusing on their own wearable and not the Apple Watch App.]

At this point it is clear that our source was wrong and we were wrong. Sorry for blowing that one, we’ll do better in the future.

Niantic is working on its own wearables.  Pokemon Go is available at the app store.

Back in September, Apple and Niantic announced that the popular game Pokémon Go was coming to the Apple Watch before the end of this year. Since then, however, no news has come concerning that release and now it appears that the plans have been scrapped altogether…

Site default logo image

A trauma surgeon and emergency medicine doctor are crowdfunding FallCall, an Apple Watch app which automatically detects when someone has fallen and calls for the appropriate level of help.

The app is designed to take action automatically, based on the detected severity of the fall …
