Apple begins rolling out screen protector installation program to Japan retail stores

Site default logo image

Earlier today we reported that Apple was partnering with one screen protector company, likely Belkin, to offer professional installations of screen protectors done by machines. Now, a report from MacOtakara says that Apple has started rolling out its screen protector installation service in Japan and that it has in fact partnered with Belkin to do so, just as we reported this morning.

Amazon’s Xmas shipping cutoff for Prime is today, score last-minute deals & Apple gifts

From 9to5Toys.com:

Today is your last chance to place a Prime order at Amazon and get it in time for Christmas without having to pay extra for expedited delivery. That means you can avoid crowds at the mall and still knock out the rest of your holiday shopping. Even better, there are still tons of deals available so you can save a few bucks while you’re at it. Don’t stress about finding good gifts either. We’ve put together several guides that’ll steer you in the right direction.

First off, if you’re not yet a Prime member go ahead and sign-up for a free trial. Along with 2-day shipping on millions of products, Amazon Prime also includes unlimited photo storage, early access to Lightning deals, and streaming of TV shows/movies. Pro tip: Prime memberships make great gifts for new and current Prime shoppers.

For last-minute deals you should head to the Gold Box page. There you’ll find the Deals of the Day, Lighting Deals, coupons, and on-going offers. Typically, Deals of the Day offer the greatest savings, but Lightning Deals are great too if you’re quick enough to score the best ones. Amazon’s Holiday Central makes it really easy to find gifts for anyone. Just browse through different categories including electronics, toys, books, movies & TV, tools & home improvement, and others to get inspired. If all else fails, here are a couple can’t-miss gift ideas to bail out you procrastinating shoppers:

Mophie Juice Pack Plus for iPhone 6/6s: from $90.41

SteelSeries Stratus XL Bluetooth Wireless Gaming Controller for iOS Devices: $61.50

Still looking for more gift ideas? Browse our guides to see what products we recommend:

It’s worth noting that other retailers including Best Buy are also offering free 2-day shipping, but they obviously don’t come close to offering the same breadth of products as Amazon.

Review: Belkin’s Charge Dock, the first w/ an integrated Apple Watch charger

Review: Kanex’s Thunderbolt 2 Express Dock is a handy MacBook hub with middle-of-pack features, pricing

As I’ve said before, Thunderbolt 2 docks are a really great idea for MacBook users. Before now, there were three major options: Belkin’s $300 Thunderbolt 2 Express HD DockElgato’s $220 Thunderbolt 2 Dock (review), and CalDigit’s $226 Thunderbolt Station 2 (review). All three are designed for the same purpose — to connect a bunch of peripherals (including hard drives, a monitor, and audio cables) to your Mac with one Thunderbolt 2 cable — and they all have the same core peripheral ports, with small differences to set them apart from one another.

This month, Kanex is entering the fray with the Thunderbolt 2 Express Dock ($250), which looks a lot like Belkin’s dock but is closer in price to Elgato’s and CalDigit’s. Aluminum on the top and bottom with a black plastic core, it has a front-mounted USB 3.0 port with two more on the back, and comes bundled with a power adapter and 3.3-foot Thunderbolt cable. While it doesn’t stand out in any major way from its earlier rivals, it’s competently executed and attractively designed, with some modest feature tweaks that prospective buyers should know about…

Belkin and Google debut USB-C cables, including low-priced Ethernet, DisplayPort, HDMI and micro-USB adapters

Coinciding with today’s announcement of the dual USB-C port-equipped Chromebook Pixel 2 laptop, Google and Belkin today announced separate collections of new USB-C cables and adapters. These new options go well beyond Apple’s upcoming USB-C accessory lineup for the 12″ MacBook, while also including some familiar options at lower-than-Apple prices. They’re amongst the first USB-C accessories to be announced by major manufacturers, as inexpensive USB-C cables from smaller companies are beginning to make their way onto Amazon for pre-order…

Belkin expanding WeMo smart home range with four new sensors, as BeeWi plans to compete

Site default logo image

Belkin has announced four new products for its WeMo home automation range, with a focus on home security. You won’t be able to get your hands on them for a while, though: they aren’t set to go on sale until the second half of the year.

All four new products are sensors, capable of sending alerts to the WeMo app and triggering other WeMo devices such as switches, plug sockets and lightbulbs …

Review: Belkin’s QODE Ultimate + Ultimate Pro Keyboard Cases add metal keyboards to the iPad Air 2

The average iPad keyboard case sells for $100 or less, and there are now hundreds of options, mostly from companies based in China. But several developers have been selling deluxe iPad keyboard cases, using upscale metal housings and premium features to command $130-$180 asking prices. To that end, Belkin has debuted very early iPad Air 2 options called the QODE Ultimate Keyboard Case for iPad Air 2 ($130, available now) and QODE Ultimate Pro Keyboard Case for iPad Air 2 ($150, currently available for pre-order).

As their “Ultimate” branding suggests, these are supposed to be Belkin’s best iPad keyboard cases, though only the Pro version really succeeds at justifying its price this time out. Below, we’ll explain why.

Review: Elgato’s Thunderbolt 2 Dock is a faster, one-cable hub for all your Mac peripherals

Site default logo image

As “really good Mac accessory ideas” go, Thunderbolt docks are high on the list. It’s hard to overstate the sheer convenience of connecting a bunch of peripherals to a central hub, then running one Thunderbolt cable from the hub to your Mac — a huge time-saver if you’re frequently bringing any Thunderbolt-equipped MacBook in and out of an office full of hardware.

Earlier this year, Elgato’s original Thunderbolt Dock brought that convenience to Macs with first-generation Thunderbolt Ports. For the same $230 price, the just-released Thunderbolt 2 Dock ramps up the speed using twin Thunderbolt 2 connectors, and also boosts the performance of integrated USB 3.0, HDMI video, and analog audio-out ports. The under-the-hood changes make it a solid pick regardless of whether you have a newer Mac with Thunderbolt 2, and even if you’re using an older Mac with Thunderbolt.
