Apple's iPhone 7 and 7 Plus were announced on 7th September 2016

Apple revealed the iPhone 7 on 7th September 2016.

There were few surprises. As expected, the phone was an iteration on the previous iPhone 6/6s, though with tidier antenna lines and camera bump. The only significant design change was two new colors, in the form of a high-gloss Jet Black and a matte black simply known as … Black.

Also as expected, Apple removed the 3.5mm headphone socket in favor of Lightning and wireless headphones – though with an adapter in the box for existing 3.5mm headphones. The company justified the move on the basis that it had better uses for the space, notably the haptic motor for a new touch-sensitive Home key to aid waterproofing, and a better camera, especially in the iPhone 7 Plus. More notably, it announced a new W1 wireless chip for instant, painless pairing with compatible headphones, the pairing propagating across all your devices via iCloud.

The headline new feature was, as predicted, reserved for the iPhone 7 Plus. The dual-camera system provides 2x optical zoom, and uses a combination of parallax effect and machine-learning to separate the foreground from the background to simulate shallow depth of field.

It’s going on two weeks since the iPhone 7 first went on sale, which means that many of us have had time to sit back and digest the experience. We covered the iPhone 7 via an unboxing video with a glance at some of the device’s top features, but now we’ll take a closer look at the new Lightning EarPods versus the old EarPods with 3.5mm headphone jack.

Epic iPhone 7 cinematic 4K camera test [Video]

One of the bigger features with the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus is definitely the improved optics and camera quality, but exactly what does this boil down to for video enthusiasts? There’s no doubt that the iPhone 7 takes some amazing photography, but its video capabilities are far superior in my opinion. Don’t believe me? With 4K video recording, optical and digital image stabilization, and an f1.8 aperture, these new iPhones are pretty incredible…

You shouldn’t get the iPhone 7 Smart Battery Case wet, but that didn’t stop this developer from putting it to the test

Site default logo image

The iPhone 7 is Apple’s first officially water resistant phone. We put this water resistance to the test on video in our recent post about the top iPhone 7 features. Some people have also wondered how cases might fare when subjected to water. A case like Apple’s iPhone 7 Silicone Case would be okay, but I certainly wouldn’t recommend submerging Apple’s iPhone 7 Leather Case.

What about the iPhone 7 Smart Battery Case? It features the same material used in the silicone case, yet includes a 2365 mAh battery sealed inside. Is it safe to get the Smart Battery Case wet? Apple’s official response to that question is a very unambiguous no. Yet, that didn’t stop AirParrot Remote developer, Squirrels, from testing the limits of the case’s potential water resistance while on a company retreat.

Feature Request: iPhone 7 stereo speakers amplify the need for Music app landscape support

Site default logo image

Not only is the iPhone 7 capable of outputting louder sound, but it also features two speakers that are capable of producing true stereo output.

The two speakers — one in the bottom of the iPhone, and one in the earpiece — are a first for an iPhone. Although the iPhone 7 doesn’t feature the four-speaker ensemble found on the iPad Pro, it is capable of producing true stereo-separated sound that your ears can perceive while the phone is oriented in landscape mode.

There’s just one problem. Unlike other apps, the iPhone Music app doesn’t yet support landscape mode…

Pro surfer puts the iPhone 7 & 7 Plus to the latest OTT waterproofing test [Video]

While Apple makes rather modest water-resistance claims for the new iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, suggesting nothing more demanding than a cycle ride in the rain, that hasn’t stopped people putting them through some rather more extreme tests.

We’ve already seen the phone survive immersion in water, soda and coffee, and even dropped into 35 feet of water. This latest test has pro surfer Kai Lenny take the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus out into the waves …

Apple releases iOS 10.1 and watchOS 3.1 beta seeds for developers (tvOS 10.0.1 too)

Apple has just seeded the first iOS 10.1 beta for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. This follows the public release of iOS 10 from just last week. It has also seeded the first update to watchOS 3; watchOS 3.1. There is also a bug fix for tvOS being seeded; tvOS 10.0.1.

iOS 10.1 includes the bokeh depth-of-field Portrait feature for the iPhone 7 Plus, which allows users to take pictures of people and have the phone synthetically blur the background. The public beta for iOS 10.1 will be available on Friday, so more people can try out the iPhone 7 Plus ‘special sauce’.

Hands-on: iPhone 7 Smart Battery Case – the good, the bad and the ugly [Video]

Site default logo image

Despite its weird looks, I’ve long been a fan of Apple’s Smart Battery Case for the iPhone 6s. It’s a case that not only protects my device, but it gives me confidence that my iPhone will stay alive for the entire duration of a real world working day.

That said, the Smart Battery Case adds significant bulk to the iPhone, and its odd looks will certainly be a turnoff to no less than a few. But if you’re looking for one of the best ways to ensure that your iPhone will still have power at the end of busy day, the Smart Battery Case is a capable accessory.

Should iPhone 7 owners consider using the new slightly-redesigned Smart Battery Case, and what exactly has changed the second time around?

$649 iPhone 7 estimated to cost Apple ~$220, here’s the component breakdown

Apple iPhone 7 Hero Images

According to a new report by IHS, Apple’s component costs for the iPhone 7 have risen compared to the previous iPhone. This means you are technically getting more bang for your buck when you buy an iPhone. But don’t fear, Apple is still making a tidy margin higher than the industry average.

Folks will almost always say “that leaves out costs for software/hardware development, research marketing, etc etc.” But the reason these companies make these estimates is for the n+1 cost of the iPhone. That means the profit Apple makes on every extra iPhone above the fixed costs and an important metric to consider.

The report says Apple’s bill of materials for a 4.7-inch iPhone 7 with the base 32GB storage is $220.80. Apple sells this iPhone 7 for $649 at retail so there’s plenty of room for Apple to make money. Full breakdown of component costs after the break …

A first look at the amazing amount of tech packed inside Apple’s 3.5mm to Lightning adapter [Video]

We’ve already seen teardowns of the iPhone 7 and Apple Watch Series 2, but a rather brutal teardown by Vietnamese site Tinhte has given us our first look at the rather astonishing amount of technology packed inside Apple’s deceptively simple-looking 3.5mm-to-Lightning adapter.

There had been some speculation about whether Apple had managed to squeeze a Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC) into it or whether the company would instead find a way to do simple pass-through audio. I was certain it had to have a DAC, and this has now been confirmed …
