Verizon memo says Dual SIM and eSIM rollout to start in early December

eSIM on iPhone XS and XR

Dual SIM is one of the big new features for the iPhone XS and iPhone XR and it was technically enabled with iOS 12.1. However, the big US carriers held back on supporting Dual SIM activations due to various reasons.

In an internal memo shared with 9to5Mac, Verizon is telling its employees that it now expects to launch Dual SIM activations for eSIM and physical SIMs in early December.

After backlash, Verizon giving 3 months’ free service to Florida counties hit hardest by Hurricane Michael

Since the landfall of Hurricane Michael last week, Verizon has been under scrutiny for its seemingly poor efforts to restore service in the Florida Panhandle. FCC Chairman Ajit Pai and Florida Governor Rick Scott have both slammed Verizon’s response to the disaster, while Scott has praised AT&T’s efforts.

Now, Verizon is responding to those concerns.

Report: Apple’s complaints about AT&T and Verizon may have led to DOJ eSIM investigation [U]

UPDATE: An AT&T spokesperson gave us the following statement:

We are aware of the investigation into GSMA’s process for developing eSIM standards that provide a better experience for consumers. Along with other GSMA members, we have provided information to the government in response to their requests and will continue to work proactively within GSMA, including with those who might disagree with the proposed standards, to move this issue forward.

News has broke this afternoon that the US Department of Justice has opened an investigation over antitrust concerns and potential collusion between Verizon and AT&T in efforts to prevent eSIM adoption and progress. Apple Watch and iPad both use eSIM technology and Apple is reportedly one of multiple manufacturers who has raised concerns with the DOJ.

Report: Verizon takes most activations for Q1, data points to why T-Mobile and Sprint have resumed merger talks

Major US carriers working together on next-gen ‘mobile authentication platform’ to replace weak SMS system

The Mobile Authentication Taskforce — AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint — have released product details for what it calls a “next-generation mobile authentication platform.”

Live mobile streaming of NFL games available on all carriers from 2018 playoffs onwards

There’s good news for NFL fans today, as live mobile streaming of games will now be available on all carriers, not just Verizon. The new arrangement begins in January.

The partnership kicks off in January 2018 with streaming of the NFL playoffs on Yahoo and Yahoo Sports, in addition to go90 and the NFL mobile app.

Carriers offer free service in Hurricane Harvey area as they battle to keep networks up

Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon are all offering free service in areas hit by Hurricane Harvey as they describe the efforts they are making to keep networks up and running, while AT&T issues credits.
