What does $699 buy you in a 17-inch PC notebook?
We went to BestBuy (.com) and shopped around for a $699 HP 17-inch laptop, just like the one in that Microsoft Ad. Here's what we found:

Let's break down what you get below:
AMD Turion™ X2 RM-72, This isn't going to be folding protein ladies and gentleman.
4GB DDR2 memory Netbook speed RAM! Now in a Notebook!
17" WXGA+ high-definition widescreen display With BrightView technology and 1440 x 900 resolution (Like the 2003 Powerbook!) Sony's Vaio P pocket computer has higher resolution.
ATI RADEON HD 3200 graphics RS780M
Features up to 1918MB shared graphics memory. Shared Graphics!
G Wireless and 100Mb Ethernet. That is so 2005!
Weighs 7.8 lbs. and measures just 1.7" thin That is almost double the thickness of Apples offering and a pound heavier.
Good battery life Of up to 2 hours and 30 minutes. That isn't good.
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium (Cringe)
Software package included
With HP MediaSmart, Microsoft Works, muvee Reveal, Cyberlink DVD Suite and more. 60-day trial of Microsoft Office 2007 Student and Teacher Edition and 60-day trial of Norton Internet Security 2009 also included. Also 300 crapware applications installed for free!
The point? The comparison isn't a good one.

ya get what ya pay for.
'cuse me while i use my MacBook Pro for 8 hours with nVidia 9800 graphics cards watching HD videos streaming from 802.11n Wi-Fi.
Just goes to show that to some girls size does matter...
All she kept going on about was 17 inches... obviously a real geekette (not!)
Maybe Microsoft should film another video where she is swearing at vista and eventually throws the whole thing out of here apartment window, killing an innocent pedestrian in the process
8 hours?! I'd be lucky to get 4 hours out of my Macbook Pro, and it's almost new. Still, it's better than the HP.
Other than that, I think the comments to the HP specs are ridiculous. Is DDR2 bad? Not really, and 4GB is quite enough.
it takes some charge cycles to get your battery to its peak performance. and apple tests the number with half brightness, which with the new led screen is pretty much legible
the 8 hours is for the new 17 MBP with the new battery architecture. Even if it is only 6 hours, it blow away the other laptops out and it is still lighter.
So, like some have noticed, what some call a premium price, I call quality parts. Now let put as the price comparison of price which I will address in the end. Anyone knows that Apple's laptops start with a determined decision in matching user experience (user desired features, reliability, weight, style, etc.) with cost effectiveness. Now let look at a laptop from Apple. For this purpose I will use the base models of the 13in Macbook and the 17in Macbook Pro to show how cheaper is not better and what she has decided to give-up by putting price over quality. The woman in the video buys the 699 HP Pavilion Laptop with AMD Turion X2 RM-72 Dual Core Mobile Processor-with a Bronze/Chrome finish because nothing say stay like bronze and shiny chrome. It looks meh. Both Mac's look way better. Anyone can see that.
In terms of mobility, I don't know of anyone that would consider any 17in laptop portable. I have always thought of them as mobile desktops because of battery life concerns running hardware too heavy for it to be useable. That said, she choose a bulky (11.2"x15.6"x1.7") and heavy(7.8lbs) computer compared to the MB (8.94"X12.78"x0.95") and 4.5lbs and MBP's (10.51"x15.47"x0.98") and 6.6lbs. I think that anyone without good reason should avoid 17 laptops, but she insisted. I don't think her back will be happy after a few trips.
She has an AMD processor. AMD is a bit behind the time in terms of performance per watt. I wonder if see noticed that? Apple stacks top of the line processors sometimes being the premiere system featuring new processors. Releases of new systems can normally be planned around Intel's release schedule. Intel is ahead of AMD in terms of processors. If Apple wanted to compete in that market, they could use last years technology. 2 and 3 year old processors could shave off those dollars. Use old system cards with low bus speeds and tiny caches. Processor speed sounds impressive until your look at the things surrounding it. Her system has 2.1GHz, with 1MB of L2 cache with 4GB DDR2. The MB 2.0GHz, 3MB L2 cache, 2GB DDR3 and MBP 2.66GHz, 6MB L2 cache with 4GB of DDR3. Good enough for today verses prepared for tomorrow.
Hard drive are another matter. HP uses the cheapest large hard drives out there. Apple provides the best hard drives with sudden drop sensors with 8MB cache buffers on disk sets with faster throughput.
Media card reader are like nice to have but never necessary. If you need one on you at all times, then that is a plus, otherwise it is added tech that you won't use often. Video cards make the system sound way outdated. ATI doesn't even bother listing the HD3200 on their site it is so old. Apple uses MB 256MB GDDR3 Nvidia GP, and the MPB uses 2 different GPUs for battery verse performance concerns, and both are GDDR3 256MB verses the 512MB.
She wanted a 17 in screen, but seemed to ignore screen resolution. Her HP has 1280X800 verse the MB(1280x800) and MBP 1920x1200 (thats true HD capable and much more screen usage). I'll take this time to point out that the 15in MBP has better resolution than her 17in HP. Note, the Best Buy site is listing the external monitor size as the internal monitor size, a little deceptive if you ask me. What she can see on her 17in screen she could view all the same content on a 13in MB and more on larger screens.
HP has a modem. Anyone using a modem... well it is upsetting to say the least if someone must suffer like that. It also does not have a Gb ethernet jacks and only supports wireless B and G. I am convinced she enjoys living in life 3 years ago... Macs comes standard with Gb ethernet, access to A/B/G/N networks. The MBP comes with a firewire 800 and a PCI-expansion slot for additional versatility.
Battery life which is a major point of a laptop. The HP has 2.5 hours. The MB 5 hrs and MBP 8 hrs. The Mac has a multi-touch trackpad. It comes with OSX which is better protected against viruses and malware for average users that can slow or corrupt a system. In addition to the OS being way better and faster than Vista's resource hog, the added software of iLife is celebrated for its ease of use and power. There is no comparing iMovie, iPhoto, or Garageband to anything out there in the consumer range.
The woman should also know that her HP will probably die after her one year warranty is up or a year from then. She will wonder in 2 years why her computer is so much slower than the rest of the computers out there. When she goes to throw out her computer, she will be hurting the environment, because her computer contains so many harmful components. The Mac is design with carbon footprint in mind, from the packaging, battery disposal, recycling, having LED backlit screens. I mean look at the size of the box for her computer.
I will close with this little nugget of explanation. In January of 2007 I bought a 15in MBP. It has a 2.16GHz core 2 Duo Intel processor, 4MB L2 cache support for Wireless A/B/G/N, 3GB of DDR2 SDRAM, 1440x900 Native display, a PCI-X expansion slot, Firewire 400 and 800, and a backlit keyboard along with other features. I am willing to say that a computer that came out in late 2006 is better than what that woman bought in 2009. On Craigslist, one person is listing theirs for 1100 and the other person is listing theirs for 1200. Mac maintain their value better than other brands. What I am saying is that when the time come for her to get a new computer, it is likely that hers will either no longer work or it will be close to worthless.
get a life bro
Serious?
wow, this comment is like reading an article. good job!
Back at my university everyone tells me i fall for Apple's marketing campaign, that I overpay... and suddenly, they are out of things to mess with me about. The reason? Well... deep inside they wish their Windows machines (XP or Vista) could have the same "safeness" that my MB has.
What if I fall for Apple's marketing campaign? I love Apple ads... Muuuch better than watching a girl who has ZERO knowledge of what a laptop should be... and only wants a giant brick with the resolution of my MB. I rather see the Mac guy... than 90's Seinfeld and Bill trying to be funny...
The ONLY thing that Apple haters can use against Apple users is price... but once they've used that one they're out of bullets.
What if I pay a couple of hundred bucks more for MY Macbook? are THEY going to be using it?? NO! They are stuck with their shitty Vista issues, millions of viruses, crashes every time... plus, I get to enjoy everytime they loose some Word article because their computer crashed. One of my absolutely favorite phrases are... "you should get a Mac", and... "really? PCs STILL have THAT problem?"
I will admit that I love apple and as a whole I think they make better computers. But over my experience with my macbook I think they make great desktops(I have a Mac Mini and an iMac) and okay slightly sub par laptops. Maybe it is just my luck but my macbook has had 4 chipped top casings, 2 replaced super drives, a replaced hard drive, broken trackpad button, battery & logic board problems, sleep/wake switch problems, replaced speakers & subwoofer, replaced power cord. So you know I'm glad i paid $2,000 for this computer with an amazing OS that's plagued with hardware problems. :)
Buy cheap, buy twice...
my old powerbook g4 goes on for nearly 5 years now, still not slow at all. i believe if not the inel transition, it wouldn't still be to far behind the latest generation. and you feel much more competent with powerbook than the crappy plastic thingy that is only big
Even when she did have to buy twice, she'd have $1401 left. So for the same money as an Apple 17", she could actually buy four crapbooks.
Just wait untill Atom-based 17" laptops get to market: $350...
Remember that most people will not need more power than is in an Atom; they are as fast as a 1.5Ghz G4. That was plenty fast a couple of years ago and still is way plenty for surfing, emailing, video and excel.
Just play games on a console and fold your proteins on it too. For photoshop or like, you go to niche products, like MacBook Pro, or, in the near future, stream your home-workstation over vnc or something to your netbook, like OnLive.
You aren't wrong when you say that most people don't need more power than what an Atom delivers. Best example is my daughter. She's happyas Larry with her little EEE cos all she does is MSN, MySpace, iTunes and a bit of word processing. But it isn't all about raw computing power. There are things that make EVERY Windows box a pain in the a*se. Ever tried to copy a few dozen gigs of data from one drive to another and tried to do some serious work at the same time? Two words: Forget it! As soon as a Windows box is on the disk, you're better off going for a walk than get the living daylight annoyed out of a slugish unresponsive machine, no matter what powerhouse it may be. Now try the same thing on a Mac and we'll talk again.
And yes, she bought a 17" notebook but really, a resolution of 1280x800 isn't really what you expect from a 17" display. I find it rather audacious of HP to even consider selling something like that. Even 1440x900 would be quite a rip off.
I bought a Toshiba lappy a couple of years ago. It was a somehow rushed decision since my trusty old Thinkpad had carked it onthe day and Iwas going to go on a business trip the next day and desperately needed a laptop. There was no time to think much or to wait for a MacBook to be delivered. So I bought quick and dirty. It's a Core Duo (not c2d!) machine with 1.83 GHz, 1GB RAM and an 80GB HDD. I wanted a small screen so I got the 14" model (1280x800!) and paid 1100 Aussie bucks for the box. The first thing that had to go was Vista. Sorry but it is impossible to work on this box this this OS. If you don't have at least 2GB and a quite a bit faster CPU you can give Vista a miss. So I threw one of my millions of XP licences on and suddenly it was possible to actually use the damn thing and not just start it up and look at the desktop.
Had I had more time and spent 500 bucks more, I would have gotten myself a little MB with similar specs but a superiour OS, which would have made life a hell of a lot easier over the last 2 years and probably a few more years to come. The Toshiba is nearing its end of life and I'm actually surprised it lasted that long cos I don't really treat the little bugger too well. After all it's a tool and not a museum exhibit.
Maybe it's a bit of an unfair comparison but my trusty old G4 Power Mac from 2000 with its 1GB RAM, two 450MHz CPUs and OS X 10.4 boots a tad slower than the nominally much faster laptop but as soon as I see the desktop, I can start working, whereas on the laptop, I have to wait about 3 minutes until the bloody HDD finally stops, so I can actualy start working.
The next laptop will be a MB that's for sure. In the meantime I enjoy my 2 Mac desktops and get the sh*ts when I fire up my "gaming machine" running Vista.
Sorry 'bout the rant but it had to be said :)
Why is the biggest, most dominant software vender in the world even acknowledging Apple?
The more of these adverts they make, the more worried they seem.
Speaks volumes to me.
Yeah that's what I've been thinking too. Ballmer puts way too much effort into trying to discredit Apple. This whole ad is just Apple-bashing. The money spent would have been better to put towards an ad showing people how to use their software. Oh well.
ah damn... you know i spent an hour typing up a comment and researching on the original news item.... and when i finnish this is posted :( oh well...
in case you haven't read my other comment, I did all this work earlier and here's what i came up with:
This is an example of someone who doesn't research what they want in a product before getting it. There are several things I want to point out here, so bear with me...
She said she wanted a 17" screen, comfortable keyboard and speed.
1. The 17inch screen on that HP Pavilion model dv7-1245dx is overrated. The Resolution is 1440x900 pixels. That resolution can be found on the 15" MacBook Pro, and is only about 25% larger than the Resolution of the 1280x800 13" MacBook. Not to mention that the MacBook is LED Backlit and has is more environmentally friendly, and she seemed like a GreenPeace person to me.
2. The Speed of the 13" Macbook is WAY better than that 17" HP. The Pavilion has the AMD Turion™ X2 Dual-Core Mobile Processor model RM-72 which has only 1 MB of L2 Cache. The 13" MacBook has 3 times as much L2 Cache. This greatly reduces the time it takes to access memory. The MacBooks also have DDR3 RAM which runs 30% faster than the DDR2 in the Pavilion. And OS X manages memory much better than Windows Vista, so she would see much better performance from 2GB DDR3. The Graphics in the MacBook, as we know, are Very nice, Much better than the ATI RADEON HD 3200 graphics RS780M.
3. With all that performance and portability... i'm sure the pavilion has great battery life, right? WRONG... from the BestBuy site: "Good battery life
Of up to 2 hours and 30 minutes." Since when is 2hrs and 30 mins good?
4. Pretty much, all Notebook keyboards are alike. But because that pavilion is so wide, it does have the bonus of a Number Pad on the side, though miniaturized to fit.
5. Other things that make the 13" MacBook better: less than 1 inch thin rather than almost 2 inches. Multi-Touch Trackpad. Up to 5 Hours of battery life which is 2x the pavilion. Oh yeah.... and Mac OS X with iLife '09.
the resolution IS 1280 by 800 like your MB. On the Best Buy site they are listing the external monitor size for the actual native resolution for the monitor. It has a maximum resolution for an external monitor of 1440x900. This is what happens when you use an old aftermarket video card. Her new computer is just an old computer that didn't sell when it really was new. Check it out on the HP site. If you go the ATI site and look for the Raedon HD 3200 graphics card, it is so old that they do not even list it in their products.
The plastics feel like they are straight from Fisher Price and those geniuses over at HP made the keyboard almost impossible to read. Light gray lettering on slightly darker "Bronze". And don't get me started of the number of problems those HPs having with the hinges failing. (NOT covered by the warranty BTW) The Service shop I work at sends at least 4 of these a week for service on failed Wireless cards too.
So, Kia going to announce an ad campaign attacking the prices of BMW?
But shall we compare a base line MacBook to a Windows notebook at the same price?

You may have your gripes, but to be honest, Windows 7 (and even Vista), in terms of what I use it for, is far superior to OS X. When I can't actually maximize a window without worrying about moving it around, problems arise. And to be blunt: Apple fanboys need to get their heads out of their asses. They overpay.
PS: The Windows laptop can run the retail version of OS X Leopard, including the ability to receive Apple updates.
And your point being what? That it is worth it to grab an extra 2 gigs of memory and HDMI out? No because it won't be a Mac.
The Hyundai commercials from a while back crack me up because they compared one model to a Mercedes or BMW (I can't remember exactly). They talked about how it was comparable and even beat out the luxury car in many ways. But the fact is at the end of the day you still drive a Hyundai. If that's what makes you happy then you probably never even wanted a BMW in the first place. There is a reason why they are called luxury, and yes Fanboys know our computers are luxury computers.
So you know what, I think I will go ahead and keep my luxury computer and you can keep your Dell. Oh by the way make sure to pick up a copy of A Walk to Remember, I heard they just released it in Blu-Ray!
Eh? XP can use more than 3 Gb of RAM? News to me. And that's only if you hack the system. By default 2 GB max. Nice.
Kind of, XP (32 bit at least) can recognize 4 GB of memory (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa366778.aspx#physical_memory_li...), but actually uses a limit of as much as 3.5 GB. Your mileage will vary based on the hardware. http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?dg=mi...
I looked for this Dell and there are some highlights that I wanna say
First video: it's the SAME videoboard of the 17" HP up there
Second Display: 16" with a 1366x768 resolution??? c'mon" its lesser than the macbook!
Third: u should change the option to Windows vista ultimate if u wanna the same OS funcionality
Forth: Bluray is an option that costs another S150
Fifth: the 6-cell battery barely goes to 2h lifetime...
Conclusion: this dell is cheap because is built with cheap components cheap display, cheap video, cheap OS, cheap battery
Right well interesting specs but you'd better load in the overheads of running anti-spyware and virus checking
Plus - who the f**k can you compare Vista to Mac OS X you knuckle grazing moron - you've clearly never used it - Vista is absolute crap - you need some kind of Cray supercomputer to actually get it to run at any reasonable speed.
Don't get me wrong - XP was good, in fact it was very good - but notice how few XP owners are trading up to Vista? Notice how many Vista owners are downgrading to XP? Notice how many businesses are avoiding Vista like the plague.
Look at the evidence before making statements - otherwise you look like a dick.
Sounds like you need rudimentary training on whatever OS you use if you have problems maximizing windows... (BTW, "maximizing windows" sounds like a PC problem, not one on a Mac...) Or maybe learn to use your trackpad better? Whatever... As for Windows Vista or Win7 Vs. Leopard, well... your opinion is laughable. Seriously. I doubt you've actually used OS X on a daily basis for any length of time whatsoever.
Also, you say us Mac users overpay? You can tell you don't know the Apple line-up too well... You could have saved $300 by comparing the WHITE MacBook (which specs out the same as the machine used as your example except it has DDR2 memory, but it HAS firewire on it...) What? SAVE money buying a Mac? You betcha...
And, yes you might be able to install a retail copy of Leopard on your PC after downloading all the boot-loader hack installers, but good luck setting up a Boot Camp partition to use with a Fusion or Parallels install. : P (Believe me, us Mac users absolutely get what we pay for... and SO much more!)
This is the bigest apple fan boy article. Just accept apple is a premium product and doesn't directly compare to cheap crappy pc's.
Microsoft compared the two first. 9to5 just finished the comparison. Pay attention.
