Report: Apple halts work on Vision Pro, aims to release cheaper Vision headset next year

Apple Vision Pro

Apple is reportedly working on a cheaper, cut-down version of the Apple Vision Pro, scheduled to arrive by the end of 2025, according to The Information. At the same time, the publication says development work on a second-generation high-end model of the Vision Pro has been shelved, seemingly to prioritize the cheaper hardware path.

Although it’s unclear at what price point the cheaper Apple Vision headset would hit, anything less than the $3,500 starting price of Vision Pro will help the company compete with the likes of the Meta Quest. The Information suggests Apple is aiming for a price around $1500, similar to the cost of a high-end iPhone.

Get ready for a wave of Threads app integrations for iPhone, iPad, and Mac following API launch

Threads logo on colorful background

Threads launched last summer as Instagram’s take on a Twitter-style app. But in classic Instagram fashion, Threads is currently iPhone-only and doesn’t offer native iPad or Mac clients. The web version works well as a progressive web app, but chances of a native multi-platform option have been bleak.

Until today, when Threads launched its third-party developer API and made it possible for third-party apps to publish content to the service.

Punch-through could persuade car makers to adopt next-gen CarPlay

Punch-through could be key to next-gen CarPlay (dash example shown)

Apple hasn’t had much luck persuading car makers to adopt its next-gen CarPlay, in which its own UI takes over all or most of the vehicle’s displays. But a feature known as punch-through might be the compromise which gets the company at least some of the way there.

Punch-through was initially designed to allow the car’s own UI to take over in very limited cases, like automatically engaging backup cameras when reverse gear is selected, but it could be applied more generally to keep everyone happy …

New HomePod coming soon? What Apple Intelligence means for the smart speaker’s future

Siri Apple Intelligence on HomePod

The biggest star of WWDC this year was undoubtedly Apple Intelligence. Apple spent nearly half its presentation explaining the philosophy behind its own spin on AI, the features it would make possible, and the bright future ahead thanks to AI’s capabilities.

The Apple Intelligence story centered around three key products: the iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Which has many wondering: what about Vision Pro? Apple Watch? HomePod?

I’m not too concerned about the Vision Pro and Apple Watch’s exclusions, as I suspect Apple has AI stories in the works there. But what about HomePod? Will the HomePod gain support for the new Siri? Might there be a new model in development?
