HomePod Mini

A powerful smart speaker with amazing sound

HomePod Mini

During its October iPhone event, Apple unveiled the HomePod mini. The HomePod mini is a new circular ‘bowl’ designed speaker aimed to be the ‘little brother’ to the original HomePod like the Amazon Echo Dot is to the Amazon Echo.

The speaker emits sound in a 360-degree array. The mini is powered by the Apple S5 chip that also powers the Apple Watch. Alongside the hardware, Apple announced several new feature updates for Siri.

HomePod mini pricing

While the original HomePod retailed for $349 originally (Now $299), the HomePod mini is only $99. This price point will make it easy to put Siri, Apple Music, Apple Podcasts, and HomeKit in every room of the house.

HomePod mini pairing

Like the original HomePod, the mini will come wrapped in mesh fabric in either black or white options.

“HomePod mini has everything customers want in a smart speaker — amazing sound for listening to music, a world-class intelligent assistant that delivers a personal experience to each member of the household, and like every Apple product, it’s designed with privacy and security in mind,” said Bob Borchers, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “HomePod mini is the ultimate smart speaker for anyone with an Apple device. It works effortlessly with iPhone to hand off music, answer calls, or deliver personalized listening suggestions, elevates the sound from Apple TV, plays music from a Mac, and so much more. There’s a lot of Apple innovation packed into such a small speaker, all at an affordable price.”

Supported Services

The mini works with Apple Music, Apple Podcasts, radio stations from iHeartRadio, radio.com, and TuneIn, and it will be adding support for Pandora and Amazon Music in the coming months. Support for Spotify was not mentioned.

Stereo support

Multiple speakers work together to stream music or podcasts to multiple rooms, all in perfect sync. By placing two mini speakers in a single room, a stereo pair can be created for a room-filling sound. A mini cannot be paired with the original HomePod for stereo pair.

New features

Siri with HomePod can identify who is speaking and customize music and podcasts to their preferences, and respond to personal requests, like accessing iMessages, reminders, notes, and calendar events, or answering phone calls. Siri on HomePods also offers a new personal update for a quick snapshot of the upcoming day.

With a single command, users can ask Siri “What’s my update?” to hear the latest news, weather, traffic, reminders, and calendar appointments.

In the new intercom feature, you can send an Intercom message from one HomePod to another — regardless if they are in a different room, a specific zone, or multiple rooms throughout the home — and their voice will automatically play on the designated HomePod.

Intercom will work across with HomePods, as well as iPhone, iPadApple Watch, and even CarPlay.

Additional Features

  • Siri Shortcuts created on iPhone and iPad are usable on HomePod mini, so users can ask Siri the mini to start a pot of coffee or add bread to the grocery list, and more.
  • Ambient sounds offer the perfect background noise to focus, relax, or fall asleep. Siri can set a sleep timer so the sounds automatically stop playing after a half-hour, etc.
  • Find My helps locate a misplaced iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch by playing a sound to help locate it.
  • Web search results from mini can be sent directly to an iPhone.
  • Music alarms let you wake up to a favorite song, playlist, or station from Apple Music.

The new Beats Pill is a better deal than the HomePod mini – and here’s why

Beats Pill

Apple in June announced a new generation of the Beats Pill, a portable Bluetooth speaker under the Beats brand. As my 9to5Mac colleague Chance Miller said in his review here, the new Beats Pill is “better than ever” – and I have to agree. The more I use the new Beats Pill, the more I realize that it’s a better deal than the HomePod mini.

How to turn the HomePod mini into a portable AirPlay speaker

When I reviewed the new Beats Pill earlier this year, I lamented its lack of AirPlay support. After all, AirPlay offers some nice benefits and better stability compared to Bluetooth.

Instead of waiting on Beats to make good on its promise from 2017 to make an AirPlay speaker, I decided to take matters into my own hands and turn my HomePod mini into a portable, battery-powered, AirPlay speaker.

Apple’s most neglected product of 2024 deserved a big AI year

HomePad HomePod

Apple’s 2024 has centered on AI. Each new product introduction has highlighted AI; WWDC was largely a showcase for Apple Intelligence; next week’s iPhone 16 launch event is expected to be AI-heavy too. But somehow, Apple’s most neglected product of the year is also the device that’s missing out entirely on Apple Intelligence and its upgraded Siri: the HomePod.

Apple releases new midnight color for HomePod mini, replacing space gray

In a bizarre mid-July announcement, Apple has today updated the HomePod mini. Not with any new features or upgrades, however, but with a new (or more precisely, different) choice of color.

You can now order the HomePod mini in a new Midnight colorway. This joins the previous collection of White, Blue, Yellow, and Orange color options. The very similar ‘space gray’ color option has been replaced by the new Midnight option.

New HomePod coming soon? What Apple Intelligence means for the smart speaker’s future

Siri Apple Intelligence on HomePod

The biggest star of WWDC this year was undoubtedly Apple Intelligence. Apple spent nearly half its presentation explaining the philosophy behind its own spin on AI, the features it would make possible, and the bright future ahead thanks to AI’s capabilities.

The Apple Intelligence story centered around three key products: the iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Which has many wondering: what about Vision Pro? Apple Watch? HomePod?

I’m not too concerned about the Vision Pro and Apple Watch’s exclusions, as I suspect Apple has AI stories in the works there. But what about HomePod? Will the HomePod gain support for the new Siri? Might there be a new model in development?

There is no excuse for the failure to implement Spotify HomePod support

Spotify HomePod support | Original and mini models shown

My colleague yesterday referenced the fact that Spotify is demanding greater freedoms from Apple, but hasn’t yet taken advantage of the ones already offered to the company. Key among these is the company’s failure to implement Spotify HomePod support.

It seems pretty ridiculous to complain that Apple Music has an unfair advantage over Spotify, while at the same time failing to take advantage of a clear opportunity to partly level the playing field – and keep your HomePod-owning subscribers happy …

Apple TV’s new ‘Enhance Dialogue’ feature expands to original HomePod and HomePod mini with tvOS 17.1

tvOS 17 was released last month with a handful of new features and changes, including FaceTime support, a redesigned Control Center, and VPN support. Enhance Dialogue is a new feature that’s flown somewhat under the radar in tvOS 17, and it now appears to be expanding to older HomePod models with the tvOS 17.1 beta.

Multiple HomePods responding to Siri requests, instead of one taking priority

Multiple HomePods responding | HomePod mini on a desk

A significant number of users are experiencing multiple HomePods responding to Siri commands simultaneously. This is something that is normally prevented by Apple devices communicating with each other.

Many of us have multiple Apple devices within earshot, any of which could potentially respond to a “Hey Siri” command. In my home office, for example, I have my Watch, my iPhone, the stereo-pair HomePods on my desk, and another HomePod in a nearby bathroom …

Advanced Data Protection has created a problem for HomePods, here’s how to fix it

Fix HomePod bug set up update

In December, Apple launched a big expansion of its end-to-end encryption for iCloud in the US with the feature rolling out worldwide with iOS 16.3. As it turns out, Apple has shared there’s a HomePod bug where they can’t be set up or updated if Advanced Data Protection has been enabled and the smart speaker isn’t running at least HomePod software 16.2. Fortunately, there are two ways to fix it, here’s how.

HomePod mini software update will activate hidden sensor and Sound Recognition feature

One of the features of the new full-size HomePod is an integrated temperature and humidity sensor. As it turns out, this feature is also rolling out soon to HomePod mini users as well, with Apple activating a sensor that was sitting dormant inside the smart speaker. A future software update will also add support for the Sound Recognition feature…

“You’ll need to continue on your personal device” – HomeKit’s problem in one quote

You'll need to continue on your personal device (HomePod mini shown)

I felt a real sense of deja-vu recently, when I told one of my HomePods to run a scene and Siri responded with “You’ll need to continue on your personal device.” This is a message many of us will remember from 2020 … and 2021 … and 2022. Welcome to the new year – same as the old year.

But more than just an annoyance, this is, to me, an encapsulation of the biggest problem with smart home tech in general, and HomeKit in particular …

New HomePod: Three reasons a relaunched model can sell while the old one didn’t

New HomePod | Mockups in HomePod mini colors

One of the things Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported in his latest newsletter is that Apple is working on a new HomePod model, which will look and sound similar to the original.

That’s somewhat surprising, as Apple discontinued the 1st-gen model well over a year ago, though it took quite some time to sell its existing stock. So why would Apple relaunch a commercially unsuccessful product, and what could have a similar one succeed? I suspect three factors …
