UBS analyst says Apple may not be able to ship a 5G iPhone in 2020

iPhone XR colors

It has been common knowledge in the rumor mill that Apple is not ready to debut an iPhone in 2019 with 5G radios. Apple has never been early to adopting new cellular standards and 5G deployment in 2019 is very scarce anyway.

However, general consensus has indicated that Apple wants to release a 5G iPhone model in 2020. UBS analyst Timothy Arcuri released a report today that says there is an increasing likelihood that Apple will not be able to launch a 5G iPhone next year.

Sprint slams AT&T in full-page NYT ad for deceiving customers with fake 5G marketing

Sprint AT&T 5G battle

Four days after AT&T started slapping its ‘5G E’ icon on iPhones and iPads running the latest iOS beta last month, Sprint filed a lawsuit to bar AT&T from being able to use the marketing tactic for what is really advanced 4G LTE service that’s been around for years. Now, Sprint has taken the battle to the next level by taking out a full-page ad in The New York Times blasting its competitor for what it calls a “false and deceptive marketing campaign.”

Apple’s late 5G iPhone entrance could still face major supplier challenges in 2020

iPhone walkie-talkie

A new report today from Bloomberg looks at the tricky situation Apple may be in as it looks into sourcing 5G modems for its 2020 iPhone lineup. While using Intel may be the company’s first choice, there could be a major downside in using those chips. Meanwhile, Apple’s other 5G modem supplier options are also less than ideal.

Sprint says its 5G service will launch in May, but as usual, there’s an asterisk …

Sprint 5G service claimed to launch in May

Sprint 5G service will, says the company, launch in May. But as with every other carrier to announce 5G plans so far, there’s an asterisk against that claim.

Verizon kicked off the fun back in October of last year, when it claimed to have launched a ‘5G Home’ service. This did offer an improvement in speeds over existing LTE service, but wasn’t actually 5G – and the company last month abandoned the rollout

US average 4G download speeds ranked 47th among 77 countries in large-scale study

A new report from Opensignal today takes an in-depth look at global 4G network performance across 77 countries. As it highlights the shortcomings of 4G, the report shares how 5G should solve many of the pain points like network congestion and widely variable network speeds. Among other interesting points, it also ranked the countries it tested with the US coming in 47th out of 77 for average download speed.

Fake 5G label on a phone

Updated with AT&T statement, below.

Sprint is suing AT&T over the latter’s decision to push a fake 5G label to both Android and iPhone smartphones when the coverage it actually offers is a version of 4G.

5G is definitely coming soon, that much we know. However, most consumers seem confused as to what exactly the benefits of it are, when it’s coming, and which manufacturers to expect it from first. If you’re a little fuzzy on 5G, read up why you should be excited about 5G right here.

Verizon likely halting its ‘5G Home’ service rollout after test cities, waiting for 5G hardware to actually exist

Verizon

Carriers have been in a frantic battle pretending to rollout 5G service for both mobile devices and home internet. Verizon was the first to rollout what it calls 5G home internet to customers in four US cities last year. However, it’s not technically 5G, and now Verizon is likely going stop rolling out the service until later this year when standards-based 5G hardware is actually available.

5G might be over-hyped, but silly 10G claim shows it already scares cable companies

10G

As if some of the marketing hype around 5G weren’t already silly enough, the cable industry is hitting back with an absurd 10G marketing campaign.

5G doesn’t just offer the potential for dramatically better mobile data speeds: it could also be fast enough to allow people to use a mobile hotspot to replace their home broadband connection, and it is this prospect which is frightening cable companies …

5G smartphones could revitalize sales, says report, as AT&T accused of deceiving customers

5G smartphones

The launch of 5G smartphones could revitalize sales in a stagnant global market and a shrinking one in China, suggests a new report.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has been defending Apple’s prospects after the market was shocked by a dramatic downgrading of its own guidance for the holiday quarter. The fall in sales is, says the company, almost entirely in China – and this is something not specific to Apple

5G: What to know, why you should be excited, and how it will impact you

5G is coming soon. And although it seems pretty clear Apple is going to skip the next-gen wireless service in the 2019 iPhone, most Android manufacturers have made one thing certain: they’ll have at least one 5G offering as early as summer 2019.

We’ve been hearing about how 5G is bringing the next-generation of wireless service for years now. However, with casual internet browsing already at incredible speeds, paired with healthy download times on even the largest 4K movie and TV files, it seems ambiguous as to how impactful 5G will be on our day-to-day lives.

Let’s dive in and breakdown why 5G is going to be critically important in the next decade.

Bloomberg: Apple not launching a 5G iPhone until 2020 at the earliest

intel apple modem

Just as it has done in the past with the 3G and LTE transition, Bloomberg says Apple will bide its time and not jump on the 5G cellular train with the 2019 iPhone. Carriers will rollout 5G coverage in certain areas next year, and manufacturers like Samsung are set to launch 5G-capable phones at the same time.

The report says Apple will wait at least until the 2020 iPhone revision to add 5G radios. Bloomberg’s report, citing sources familiar with the matter, lines up with the supply chain mumblings we’ve been hearing.
